Well, after several years of letting them gather dust I'm looking back at the RPG Maker family. Seems the old places where I used to go to get help are now inactive and will be disappearing soon. I guess you could say winds of fate blew me to this place like a tumbleweed.
Alas, I likely would not have begun the journey for an RPG Maker community had not something gone terribly amiss in my own meanderings.
Before I go ambling off to look for a place to post a cry for help, I will leave a little about myself:
I tend to be secretive about my projects as I lack the force of will or unity of mind to see anything through to conclusion. I just play around for fun.
Everything I learn I tend to learn in a screwy order.
Starting simple? What is this 'simple' of which you speak?
I tried RPGMaker XP and did not like it.
Ironically, despite preferring fancy graphics, I like the charm of ye olde RPG Maker 2000 games....
SPEAKING OF WHICH - I've been dissecting non-commercial indie projects (mostly unfinished, abandoned things from as much as 7 or so years ago)since I learn better through taking working things apart and tinkering with them. Also, I can see first hand why CONSISTENCY in level design, variable/switch list structure, and whole lot of other things become important @.x
Unfortunately... now that I wish to try to create some more in depth projects of my own to start playing with what I've observed... well... let's just say that's why I'm headed over to the Help Me subforum next.
So hello everyone!

So hello everyone!
Hello there and welcome!
I hope you'll find a place to settle here.
You certainly aren't alone with that mindset. Just more honest than others.
Truth is, there is no "simple". "simple" just means to aim for fewer difficult parts. Obviously, starting with a short game - meaning less mapping, less balancing, easier storytelling and characterprogression (since you can be pretty straight-forward).
The thing is, you won't find motivation lying around somewhere. Especially not in the beginning. It's work and like any work - we wanna avoid it. Yet there's great joy to find in working and more so in completing hard work.
So my advice is: just do it. Make some maps, be it forests or towns and then try to tie them together somehow. Just make something. Do not care whether it comes out well, just do something.
If you find it easier to write and find yourself more interested in story, focus more on conveying a story, more dialogue and more smybolism in your game. If you find mapping a little bit easier, implement more exploration.
You could also go for a point 'n click game or other genre.
That's also why "screwy order" doesn't really matter. Once you wanna do something, you obviously gonna learn about the stuff you want to implement next! And if you do that for a while, you'll eventually cover the basic knowledge you'll need.
Once you've shown yourself you can do something, you can improve from there.
You can ask for critique in the screenshot thread here
I also advise to search in the tutorial section, there are also plenty of useful articles to be found!

I'm somewhat concerned that the problem I'm currently having is more of a "burn everything and start over" deal.
I gathered a bunch of games from different members of the RPG Maker family, and not all of them are in English. This meant several years installing a criss-crossed mess of RTP's (and not all in English) and tinkering with things until whatever RPG I wanted to look at worked.
I think this mess might be causing my big problem of the moment.

I didn't care for XP when it came out, either. The awkward tall chibi charsets are the worst RTP charsets they've ever made.
Welcome to RMN!
Welcome to RMN!
I can't really give much advice on this. Sorry.
But if you need help, feel free to ask!
Along with the other peeps here, I'll do my best to help you out (if I can, that is)
Welcome, and good luck!
