I was a Genesis kid, so I missed out on all the big important RPGs of that era. vOv
(Except Phantasy Star 4 which was, and still is, the tits.)
I know, right? It's horrifying. What's the bet they've also never played a freakin' Suikoden game either? >.<;
Guys... I'm gonna have to confiscate your gamer cards AND your MS until you've played at least one Suikoden and Breath of Fire game. It's for your own good. Personally I'd recommend Suikoden II and Breath of Fire II.

I was considering a Suikoden Mafia with a 'find the x' game style. That is, one assassin "Mafia" has infiltrated the Castle and has the True Face Rune which allows them to take on the identity of one of the Stars of Destiny. Fortunately the Strategist has learned of this and everyone is trying to protect the Tenkai from assassination. Thus, it's up to the assassin to figure out who the Tenkai is (since they're an outsider they have no idea what the Tenkai looks like) while the group tries to find whose identity the assassin stole.
I considered some of the Stars to have different powers, like the Chiyu Star being the Detective (as those under that star sign usually are the castle detectives) or Tenei Star being the Tenkai's bodyguard. There's a lot that can be done with the stars.

I've only played the first Suikoden, waaaaaaay back when it came out. I really need to play the second :D
Yes, you do~ I think you'd probably like it a lot. It does a great job in fleshing out a huge cast with enough information that you get a good idea what those characters are like. And the story is the best of the series (with the original and V tying for second place).

Oh hell yes, he is. One of the best, in my book. Forget Sephiroth! Move over Kefka! There's a new (old) villain on the block and his name is Luca Blight! He'll rock your socks, you filthy pigs~

what you have described is known as 'kingmaker' mafia
I've never played a king maker Mafia, but that sounds incredibly interesting and cool ^^ I'd totatlly play that if you hosted it.
