RMVX Ace games can read directly from a /Fonts subfolder, no installing fonts necessary. As below:

I'm glad (and startled!) to hear that people like Enforcer. I hope they keep telling me what they don't like, though.

edit: ajshdkfaksdf I sniped max's and tehguy's posts. They are below.

Wow, that's very nice if it's directed at me. : )

Anyway it's kind of hard at the outset, at least some fights are hard. If you wind up in an early random battle against four Winterwulfs and whittle a little health off of each of them instead of focusing your fire on one, then if they all unleash frost breath weapons on you, yeah, you can be in for some big damage for the first few fights of the game. The learning curve kind of gets gentler when you realize that the Winterwulfs can be dropped by two solid hits, and that you do have access to a Resist Frost spell if you need it.

Anyway different people will find that the same game is at different difficulty levels, I've found (with To Arms! and Journeyman and other projects).

By the way, I found the battle mechanics in Essence Enforcer super interesting. More on that later.

Additional thought: (the beginning of) Lionheart is actually very easy to play, at least at the beginning, but as the demo completely does not include ANY tips or pointers for how to play it and just dumps you into the game without ANY handholding whatsoever, I just want to say that I really forgive anyone who thinks otherwise at this early state.
I actually ended up having an easier time with it once I figured out which skill/spell did what and to what degree it did so and how to more-or-less fight, so at least the approach (or lack thereof) forced me to actually think and plan some stuff out (and heal the hell up once battle was over)

>then I learned that the paralyze effect doesn't go away without items ; - ;
Yeah, it was added in VX when somebody realized what an awful idea it is to only read from the Window's font folder (hi 2k(3)!). From XP on they also supported fall through font ordering as well which is what kicked in here (if it didn't it wouldn't render the text at all!) but shouldn't be necessary at all with using local fonts.

What I like about it is the gameplay and the story. What I don't like about it is the probably unintended elements of ludonarrative dissonance that make those things not quite jive together. But as that's a really complicated concept that takes a while to explain, I'm gonna save it for a full review later on.

>then I learned that the paralyze effect doesn't go away without items ; - ;

Paralysis? Who the fuck is throwing out paralysis? Oh, right...ice wights...forgot about them since they're so laughably easy to kill with turn the undead, smite evil, et al.

I wouldn't mind a disorganized version of this in my inbox or email or whathaveyou, since it would let me get to work on the mentioned issues sooner.
I think I'm just gonna LP this lot~ ^.^ I've a bit of free time and inclination.

Sweet! I don't think I've ever had an LP before! When you get to Lionheart, be gentle, and don't forget to install the fonts!

Feedback 3: Postcards: A Visit From Grandma

This is one game I wasn't entirely sure what to think about. It was a very short, non-interactive slice of life vignette reminiscing about the author's grandmother. All in all, it reminded me of a lot of the "literary fiction" written by classmates that I read in my college workshop classes. It was well written enough and had well drawn characters, but I felt like nothing really happened, so I'm not sure what the point was.

One thing I liked about it was that it didn't seem to either be a warm nostalgic lionization of the titular grandmother, nor was it a hard-hearted and scornful mockery of her as a crotchety old bat, it contained elements of both which I thought was interesting. The overall tone was confusing, because the music was a bit...suspenseful...in a way that really did not fit with the narrative. This might have been intended simply as a joke, I'm honestly not sure--this was a pretty nuanced piece and I'm not certain to what the desired result was laughter (I hope that comes off as a positive comment). There was at least one out and out joke that I at least cracked a smile at.

As a final comment, when I got to the "bonus" content at the end, I was very disappointed that Helen in the recorded interview was not NEARLY as foul-mouthed and nasty as her portrayal in the body of the "main game" (which I hesitate to call it cause it's like ten minutes long).

All in all, I don't really know what to make of this one (I could be overthinking it), and I reserve judgement.

Fun fact: I have played exactly two visual novels ever. This, and Song of Saya. How's that for a pairing?

RANDOM THING I HAVE NOTICED: A lot, like freakishly a lot, of the resurrected games had their first incarnations in the year 2002! What's up with that?

I personally loved Postcards. The music I understood. We've all been there before. I'm visiting (insert difficult to deal with relative here). It's a suspense thriller. You don't know if it's going to be a happy visit or an out and out disaster. Usually, it ends up like this; short and befuddling. I'm surprised that there is someone who can't relate to this because it's such a common experience. The touch of senility ("You forgot your key, didn't you? What if some vagabond has found it? He could come right in here and cut my throat!"), absent all out dementia, speaks of a real person, not a caricature.

And it's amusing because it's family, and it feels like family. And as strange as it sounds, this is the way family is supposed to feel.

Well it definitely reminded me of my grandma, who's been dead for years now and was effectively dead for years before that due to dementia. There definitely seems to be a distinct, understated Jewishness to the whole thing which kind of resonated with me too.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Feedback 4: The Old Journal - 13 Pages

An eerily accurate description of the experience of playing this for even a few minutes.

This game was annoying and dumb. It was annoyingly stupid and stupidly annoying. Like...moreso than the Flower Bubble Game, and I don't think it was even trying. I feel torn. Part of me doesn't want to spend valuable time enumerating all of the ways that this game was less than good, because that's basically just spending time and energy on being mean, but part of me feels compelled to do that, because this game needs a lot of work, and its creator needs a lot of help. I guess I'll try to find a compromise.

First off, the spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are so atrociously prevalent that it makes it impossible to enjoy this game or take it seriously. There are at least two misspelled words ON THE OPENING SPLASH SCREEN WITH THE PRODUCTION COMPANY LOGO alone. This is a new low. I am guessing that the developer was ESL, in which case...please find a friend who is a native English speaker to help you out with translation. If English was your first language, then well, you know...maybe you can find someone to euthanize you re-teach you it.

Secondly I get that this game was trying to set up a spooky and mysterious atmosphere, and some--SOME--of the better journal pages would have helped with this, if not for the terrible spelling and grammar, but absolutely nothing in the way of visuals or sound design did anything to support this mood. I was frustrated when at the beginning when you choose between the music being "Energetic" or "Dark" there wasn't an "ACTUALLY GOOD" option because RTP tunez is not my cup of tea. And honestly, I feel like having a show choice event to let the player pick the tone of the music is a complete cop out, even if both choices weren't ear poison (albeit not ear poison on the order of the flower bubble game).

Thirdly, there's really no reason for this game to be developed in VX Ace because it uses none of its default functionality. At the very least close off the menu because the only function of it you will ever use is save and item.

Finally, the gameplay. It was, for the most part, pointless and annoying. A surprising variety of "puzzles" that either had solutions that were immediately obvious or could be solved only by tedious trial and error, including my least favorite puzzle-type of all time: "Guess which tiles on this blank panorama map are passable, motherfucker!". I tried to beat the game a few times but got stuck on a seemingly infinitely scrolling map with a badly scrolling parallax sky graphic in the background and gave up in disgust.

Probably the most frustrating part of this game is that it actually had some good or at least interesting ideas, they were just really badly implemented. I like the idea of collecting pieces of a mystery book to piece together a story. Combining that with roguelike elements of randomization? Awesome. Throw in multiple quirky game modes? Great. I should have liked this game. It's just that every single aspect of implementation here was terrible.

It was the point when I realized that this badly spelled JPEG literally described what I was doing in the game that I ragequit.

None of these games really seem to be great so far. I mean, I guess that makes sense. There's a reason why each one was originally abandoned. And from the event discussions, I'd guess most of us had at least two reasons - some part of development that was becoming frustrating, and then also the fact that we knew that the end product wasn't really going to be worth it.

Still a really good feeling to finish a game like this though. Finishing your old abandoned games is amazing. Like taking a dump you've been holding in for twelve years.

Okay, so I tried to play Tales from the Reaper, and here's what I get.

Oh my god.... I don't know how to help. Usually that sort of problem is with a better AEP or RPG_RTP.exe issue. But since I'm not getting that, it could well have to do with me checking compatibility settings for Win 8.

I'm getting some weird glitch with Tales not wanting to make save files (the lsd stuff, it somehow saves it internally). The problem being that I have a video that runs/doesn't run based on whether I have saves for save detector to notice. And a menu that doesn't show the load option unless you have actual save files showing. They clearly show on the save menu, but I can't seem to get it to make them. I'm gonna move the video to the Intro section (...) and make the menu saveless friendly.

Please please please. Pepsi, you know about save files, I really don't. Can you check this problem and give me a fix?

On the above topic, mine is a 2013 revive. So it just depends.
Cave Adventure
Super simplistic and very default. It came off as rather shallow and empty, unfortunately. It's not a bad game, per se, but it's not exactly much of a game really. There's a very huge lack of personality which is a pity. The mapping is alright bar an error or two, but the only thing to really comment on is the item names - everything else is basically default. Still, it's balanced easy enough to get through and if you feel like a quick romp through a cave, it's there.

I'll add the video here when I'm done.

Legacy Reborn...played it to the end, still wondering where the game was.

Sorry about that! I jumped in, like, two weeks after the event started (give or take) and I was rushing around in the end like crazy, making sure I had something that was at least playable.
...or not. Apparently you need a fucking phone to upload to YT now. Fuck you Google.

I'll try upload again tomorrow, after I've 'verified' my already fucking verified account. Ugh.

Cave Adventure seems very much like a "small, simple project started for the sake of learning how to rpgmaker" which is totally alright.

I've actually done a lot of those over the years, many of them started for the sake of re-learning how to rpgmaker, or learning how to rpgmaker with a new version of the program and a few years of being out of practice. I haven't released all of them, but Mage Duel is an example of one I did (and to this date is the only game I've ever had featured on RMN in six effing years of activity).

With my real life obligations taken care of for the moment, and with a good night's sleep for once, I'm now ready for game playing. :D I've randomly selected Clouds as the first game I'll play, and I'll go from there ^_^
