[REVIVE THE DEAD] GAME DISCUSSION

I disagree.
The graphics and mapping are fine so there's nothing there to quibble about. The story is fine if minimalistic. The game is short, yes, but so are many others. There's no reason this game does not belong on the site.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

...Did you have your eyes closed while you were recording your LP?
Every single aspect of it was a copout of the lowest possible effort. What "story" plausibly existed was far worse than having none at all. There was nothing good, average, acceptable, or even tolerable about the game - not the graphics, the mapping, the gameplay, the story, the music, the humor, the characters, the atmosphere, the production value, the presentation, the length, the meaning, the pacing, the interaction, or the setting. It was quite possibly the single most worthless thing I have ever seen on any video game website; certainly on this website.
It was very clearly nothing more than a troll submission, an attempt to see how bad of a game could get accepted on the premise that it was for a contest.

That is your opinion. Personally I found it interesting and having a deeper meaning than you seem to have. Words do not a game make. Nor maps. They can help in the creation and presentation of a game, yes, but a game can be as abstract as an idea. Games as art is a thing. Sometimes it's what you get from a game that makes it worth playing.
It is an experimental game and I took it as such. Thought did go into the story and design - the change of the graphics from one style to another was deliberate and part of the 'story'. Instead of just typing words into a message box the creator instead used images to reinforce the words being said, making them stand out more. Thought was put into that. Where you see no effort, I saw enough.
Sometimes what matters is the experience and what you take away from it. You took nothing - that's fine. Others took more.

Clouds isn't art. It's an adult imitating the scribbles of a three year old, and holding it up mockingly pretending that it's art, in order to make fun of art and artists.
If you seriously can't see this, then you've been succesfully trolled by its creator.

This is my favorite painter. I have been told by experts that this man is not an artist. I have been told by experts that his work is trash. But everyone who looks at it sees something different. Liberty saw someone unfairly forced out of the world. I saw an expression of passive acceptance.
LockeZ saw trash. Congratulations! You're an expert.

For the record, I saw someone losing their identity. I thought everything else was just a part of himself and that's why it was so surreal and why he was so different.
Maybe I'm weird.

Not just that, but effort went into the creation of the game. Custom graphics - even if they were 'just stick figures' getting all four sides to animate, as well as the tiles, even if they were not amazing pieces of art, the cats... these show some modicum of effort.
Scripts - the overlay script to allow the 'back entrance' to force you to see that you're being excluded from the rest of the world - that did not need to exist but that it does shows consideration and thought about reinforcing the message. The menu script removing all the menu options bar the necessary. These show a modicum of effort as well.
The images instead of message boxes and the change of graphical style (why would it be included when they had already started out with custom then gone back to it when the whole game could have been either/or and have been made easier?) show deliberate choice.
Enough thought was put into the game to count. There are games with a lot less thought and effort put into them on the site - mainly competition games - and they were accepted as 'games' despite that fact. This is a game, it qualifies and ticks all the appropriate boxes and had a message within it to boot.
Just because it doesn't count in your opinion doesn't nullify it's existence to everyone else. You have your opinion on it, and you are entitled to it. Others have theirs.

Uh, the different graphical styles are simply because he stole maps from three different other abandoned projects.

I inferred it from the fact that he made it in under two hours I am a cynical asshole with no faith in humanity.
Whatever, this is why I'm not in charge of the submission queue, I would deny like basically everything. Including at least three of my own games.

Don't sweat it. ^.^
We decided to go with trust on this event - there's a lot of it that just can't be checked, so we just trusted that people have done the right thing. Frankly, I had a 5 minute entry ready but figured it was too little for the event, but I'm not gonna fault others if they thought differently and decided to put theirs up. :D

Actually I had a similar experience with it, so you may be weird, but you're not alone in it.
Sorry, not sure if I'm allowed to post in this thread since I didn't actually make any of the games and this seems to be a participant's feedback loop but gourdy's response resonated with mine so I wanted him to know.
Cool, good to know. Well I'm currently playing Flower Bubble, and now that I've stopped the blood dripping from my ears and eyeballs, I'm finding it not horrible. Its silliness is off the charts, but there is a sort of indomitable naivete about the protagonist that makes running around a pastel world picking flowers and listening to eurodance actually fun, and I've only found one spelling error so far, which is a rarity for me.
Though it's going to be weeks until I can get 'licky licky' out of my head.
Not sure what sort of feedback the devs are looking for, I'm probably going to put mine into reviews for completed games as I normally do, unless I find something game-breaking.

I saw the whole outcast from a group thing. Which is a but ironic, because Locke wants to make him outcasted for submitting it.
The game is far too short, and I'm not sure I get the ending. But yea, it didn't really make me rageface either.

Not to mention that I literally found out about the contest the last week, and did an extreme rushjob. It's glitchy and it's flawed. That said, in four days, I did two storylines, revamped the battle system, and made a ton of edits.
Likewise, I could rage about Mystic Double (it was kinda "early rpgmaker design" with stuff like choppy mapping or teleporting past enemies to avoid using switches for character removal, to say nothing of the whole deal where you could get multiple swords).
These games aren't perfect. But they're enough.
Okay, moar LPs!

You're talking about Mystic Quest, which is the game as it was before he did the remake, right? It's neat to see how much he improved for the remake, Mystic Dawn (though it was odd that one had combat while the other did not).
I'd like to point out to everyone that I've added that much-requested battle retry feature to Essence Enforcer. If that was something you felt was lacking, go ahead and grab it. There are several other fixes you might want, besides.
I downloaded a bunch of games but I've been grinding Rogue hunt log marks for the last week now. (someone please help)

Excellent. :D I haven't gotten to EE yet, but I'll be playing it soon :D
Likewise, if anyone wants to play Chase for Divinity but hasn't gotten started yet, I've uploaded a new version that fixes some bugs and corrects some typos ^_^

Sir Redd of Novus: He who made Prayer of the Faithless that one time, and that was pretty dang rad! :D

Chase for Divinity is currently my favorite*, with Essence Enforcer being a solid second. Haven't beaten either one, but I will eventually! I'm gonna try ReCrisis even though I haven't played any other games in the series.
I was not a fan of Legacy Reborn. Although reading Marrend's responses, it looks like I glitched myself out of a good chunk of the game. I'll dive back in and check it out later.
What do I think of them so far? Well...
Chase for Divinity:
The system where all party members react to the environment is what really sold it for me. The characters are all varied and interesting, and while I'm not getting and overall sense of the story, I feel like I'm not far enough in to be able to comment on that. (I got off the ship and am on the second continent. Just got Sarah in my party) So far, though, there wasn't much of a hook in the main story to hook me in.
But the fact that characters can show just a little bit of their personalities through their reactions to the environment does SO MUCH for the immersion! The characters is what really drew me in.
My one complaint is how easy the battles are so far. Basic attacks are enough to beat every random enemy, and bosses can be destroyed by spamming your strongest attacks. I like how every character has a diverse range of skills, but you only use one out of all of them. It's certainly not fun. But it's not tedious since battles come and go very quickly, so it doesn't ever drag me down. For the record, I like random battles, so while it may be a dealbreaker for some, I have no complaints about them.
Essence Enforcer:
A visual novel in VX Ace? This I HAD to see. Honestly, what drew me in was the art. At first I thought it was original, but then I saw those same assets available in a graphics pack on steam. Oh well. My fault for not knowing, not anyone else's.
Anyway, the story has an interesting set up. As I haven't finished the demo yet, I can't comment on the entire first chapter. But I can say the battle system is unique, interesting, and, most importantly, 90% based on skill. The only unknown is that you can't tell what enemies will do with certain essences until they actually do it, then you have to remember that for all future encounters. Other than that, I love RPGs that reward good skill instead of RNG determined hits, misses, criticals, etc. And Essence Enforcer certainly delivers on that.
There are a few problems with bosses that attack twice in one turn regarding Essence use, leading to one frustrating instance where I was locked into using only water Essences. The boss I was fighting has a draining move mapped to his water essence and was healing just as much as I was hurting, so I was in a deadlock and couldn't Surge or do anything but reset the game.
Legacy Reborn:
I feel bad saying this because I like Marrends games, but this one... just wasn't good. I mean, Marrends definitely fixing the many many problems it has, but even if it wasn't buggy, there just simply isn't much to comment on.
The good news is that it's being fixed, so once it is I would give a cautionary recommendation. As it is now, no.
*Yes I am a bit biased because I'm a fan of unity's games. Sue me.

ReCrisis is independent of the other titles. Its existence writes out Cosplay Crisis and makes Crisis/Evolution the true canon.
I really need to play some of these games but I'm pretty sure I can't run 2k3 titles. I'm also working on copious other things at the same time ;w;
