I haven't played REevolution (and I can't, either. The download link is gone. Aw...). Will I have needed to to understand the story? Or will it be like Metal Gear Solid 3 where it makes many references to the other games that a newcomer will be thoroughly lost?

Thank you very much for the feedback, Red_Nova! :D I'll leave my response under here:

I agree with your comments. The game's main story is very loose and doesn't hook the player. The game's also waaay too easy, and while it will get a little bit harder as you go on, I'm not sure it will adequately challenge you. Also the character's roles in battle are pretty wonky overall. Sorry about that! ^^;; Still, really glad you're enjoying it despite all of that! :DD

And speaking of, I've been playing more games myself, so I'll put comments on the latest ones I've played here:

Risen

This game is really rough around the edges and there's a lot about the battle system that feels unbalanced. Having said that, it's still a short fun dungeon crawl with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. I found the music-video-with-sprites at the end pretty entertaining. I think if you took a little time to fix up the mapping and battle system, you'd have something pretty nice here.

I grinded for a while to beat the optional boss, which got me some really nice loot, including the Hero's Sword. The attack animation for the Hero's Sword you get is just the standard fist attack animation, though. Also, the old man who sells you items will give you the Masamune over and over. Might want to look into that ;)

Mystic Dawn

Mystic Dawn is quite a treat for the eyes, and I can't say enough about how nice the mapping is. The demo's pretty short, and doesn't have any battles, but is very well put together, and has some neat effects in regards to the scenery changing as things happen. I'd definitely play a full-game version of this. It was also really cool to see how the game looked originally versus the new version :D

ReEvolution references ReCrisis/Cosplay Crisis, not the other way around :)(and not majorly because I was trying to be discrete about its sequel status). ReEvolution is the sequel and takes place roughly 100 years after ReCrisis. You don't need to play anything to play ReCrisis.

Yes, I'm sure there are still plenty of glitches for me to attack. The old man with the Masamune: nothing a little switch can't fix. Hero's Sword is easy enough to fix, just another example of me forgetting details.

Balance, here is where I have an issue and this is where I spent most of my time in development. I don't seem to be very good at this yet. I worried, even obsessed over the monsters being too easy, which was why I initially only put save points at the ends of the early maps. Making you grind for the bosses I did deliberately, but every playthrough, at no point did I find the combat so hard that I had to run from a battle. I found that several creatures weren't doing damage once you hit level 2, so I ratcheted them up in strength a little and I added some HP to make you use skills and items. The monsters seemed to drop enough that this seemed practical. I still have to add the custom RE script (no idea how to implement it, sorry).

I could really use some tips and suggestions on creating balanced combat, because I really felt like I was failing all around but had no idea what to do about it.

It's all about walking that thin line of difficulty. (I have the problem of erring on the side of too easy >.<;;) All in all, you did a good job, and I've definitely seen much worse, but given the fact that you start in a dungeon with limited supplies and no way to inn-rest or shop (until near the endgame), it makes the enemy balancing more essential.

I think for a good deal of people who like a challenge, this won't be a problem. But I can definitely offer some suggestions for fine-tuning this if you'd like. I'm going to open the game in RPG Maker 2003 so I can see how exactly you implemented everything.

The first map was the part that caused me the most trouble, as I can encounter any of the monsters in the room, even before I get my bearings and get the spells I'll need to survive. I'd use Areas (right click on the map>create area) to make the encounters when you just start out not to include the battle with five enemies (specters and zombies, I think). I can give more specific advice after I've looked at the game in 2003 ;)

I will say straight up, that this is not my sort of game, story wise. And I didn't take the history lesson. So while names and terms flew over my head and I cracked jokes about how poorly I pronounced everyone's name, I lost a lot of the story. It sure felt like there was a strong world though! Once I got to combat, the sound effects all had a strange tinny quality to them that hurt my head. I'm not sure what was going on there?? To the right sort of player, this seemed like a strong game though.

That's odd about the sound effects...it doesn't sound that way on my computer, so I think possibly it might be an issue with your sound card or speakers or something.

Cloudsisn't art. It's an adult imitating the scribbles of a three year old, and holding it up mockingly pretending that it's art, in order to make fun of art and artists.

If you seriously can't see this, then you've been succesfully trolled by its creator.

Actually, these are some of the reasons that it is art. I feel like if you had been around when the dadaists were active, dadaism would have made you shit bricks. I touched on this way back when when we had that surrealism comp but...anti-art is inescapably and ironically art. And while Clouds is certainly an anti-game, it is also inescapably and ironically a game.

Also I can't believe there was this much controversy over CLOUDS, lol!

Edit: So it looks like I've got some more games to play (I make no promises I'll get to everything, for the same reason I never unlock all the achievements/collectibles in console games: I'm a shitty completionist). Has anyone here besides PianoTM and MakioKuta gotten a chance to play Lionheart yet?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I see your point. And I wouldn't call it controversy so much as just me thinking the game's really stupid. My own game is pretty stupid too though! Who accepted this Flower Bubble Game shit?

Though it's going to be weeks until I can get 'licky licky' out of my head.

Horrifying Fact: This is one of my top three favorite songs. "Happy Boys and Happy Girls" is another and is also in this game. What the hell is wrong with me.

CAVE ADVENTURE by El_WaKa

So I just played ^^^^^ that :)

Description said it was a RPG. Looks more like Adventure or dungeon crawler to me but I don't make games, I just play them :)

Looked like the usual monster killing, cave adventure to me but I enjoy that type of game so although very short demo, I did enjoy it. And the author was correct, brown cave crawling does get boring, so please do change scenery. :)

Good idea. If you're worried about making it too easy, you could make the heal points either only heal once each or charge you money to heal.

So, have downloaded a new version with save/heal points. The Masamune problem is fixed. The animation for Hero's Sword is a sword. Also, caught the issue with the scientist's wife being in color while the scene was black and white. Fixed that. Also deleted the specters and zombies five enemy encounters from the first map.

And fixed a few mapping issues I saw. They're EVERYWHERE!

Yes, I had a few game breaking bugs that I managed to fix for the second most recent download. I also made an improvement, adding save points with heal points. The heal points on the first map cost 40g, the rest don't. I don't think the second one mentions the cost, but I'm not going to worry about that at the moment as it's a minor concern.

Thank you for locking that other thread, I will have more time for this now. : )

I rather enjoyed the game though there were a few issues with it. Mainly, certain skills in battle caused crashes, which is a pity (especially on that one boss fight where I was doing really well! :< )

The graphics were all sound (though a little dark) and the writing was very polished (it could have done with a little more roughness - no-one speaks perfect dialogue all the time but that's just a nit-pick). And that music was bammin' slammin' beatalicious.

Overall, a pretty solid game.

Feedback 5: Legacy Reborn

I feel kind of bad about this, but I ragequit this after five minutes thinking it was just not worth my time. I know that sounds really harsh, but I feel compelled to be honest. I sat through the intro thinking "hmm...boy that sure is a lot of default graphics/music/menus" and "hmm...boy, those Japanese names sure seem arbitrary and kind of weaboo-y" and "but maybe the gameplay is really good!" then I bought a sword for the boy, a cane for the girl, four potions and an ether and went out onto the world map to the forest. I ran to the right, collected 100 gold from a chest (I giggled at "Geld-Pasil" being the proper name of the currency) and ran up to the one enemy who was different from all of the others.

Then I fought a battle against a Thug who had more and more interesting spells than my party, who went faster than my party, and who hit for far more damage. And I died. And then I ragequit this after five minutes thinking it was just not worth my time.

It looks like the balance needs some serious work in order to make the gameplay fun, rather than a frustrating chore. If I was doing triage on all of these games, I would flag Legacy Reborn as first for treatment.

Edit: In other news, played the first five minutes of ReCrisis and really loving it so far.

Edit2: Taking a break from ReCrisis due to the unfortunate crashbugs in battle that Liberty mentioned. Next up, Mystic Dawn.
