MATT TAYLOR LANDS PROBE ON COMET, BUT IS NOW (IN)FAMOUS FOR TACKY SHIRT.

Posts

yeah, but then you look at the number of comments and pageviews of the shirt articles vs those of the actual science achievement, and then you see where they're coming from...

The US gov't should totally double NASA's budget because they continue to do cool things like landing probes on comets and other wicked shit:

They should make one for this too to cover all the things you have to do to land on a comet.
I wish their Titan probe got funded
It was such a cool concept. )':
Space exploration is a waste of time. If you really want to make money in journalism, you report on anything that generates outrage. And that's what we as a species are all about : Money.

More like centuple it.

Yeah we should probably consider living on other planets as a hugely important idea.

Considering that we're only a paltry 2 billion away from the maximum number of people our planet can support at once.
Earth won't be in the habitable zone forever.

(aside from the tackiness of the shirt in a professional work environment)
The shirt he wore at work is perfectly fine! I mean, look at it!
<pic that has nothing to do with the shirt in question wtf???>
It's a fine shirt to wear for most of the day when your project succeeds. He even wore it before and after his interview about his project!

...it was tacky? I mean, the colours clash horribly, the design is pretty ugh and it looks like one of those cheap and nasty shirts you get that have panels of comics overlaying each other. It's pretty ugly, all told.

Frankly, I've seen a lot more offensive shirts and if he wants to wear that, it's up to him. I personally don't care. It's a shirt - I don't get the big deal, especially since it's not actually offensive.

I was just pointing out how tacky it is in a supposedly professional environment. I'd do the same if it were a woman wearing a hawaiian shirt.

Honestly, they should swap the military and NASA budget. Or split the military budget in half and give it to NASA. It'd still be more than NASA gets in a decade from them. :/

I actually had to laugh when I saw a lot of the hubub caused by the shirt because the people I saw it from were pointing at tumblr as being full of ragey femnazi's going to town about it... but I have seen only one post about it on tumblr and it had about 15 reblogs???

And I've a blog where I follow a lot of feminism blogs. It's been all crickets there. In fact, the only reason I heard there was an issue (aside from the tackiness of the shirt in a professional work environment) was on another site altogether... and here. Now.

Really? Showed up on the feminist blogs I "follow" (in the same way that you would "follow" a large poisonous insect crawling around in your house somewhere, that is).

I gotta say this seems like more No True Scotsman "nuh uh the feminists who are raging butthurt over #Shirtgate aren't REALLY feminists cuz reasons" kinda stuff. Feminism spends a lot of time being actively and loudly shitty. You want to say that doesn't discredit it as a movement, that's a fine position to take, laudable even. But it doesn't change the fact that feminism spends a lot of time being actively and loudly shitty.

But the shirt makes the wommenz feel unwelcome in STEM or some shit, kentona, and that's SRS BSNS! Or something.

I was just pointing out how tacky it is in a supposedly professional environment. I'd do the same if it were a woman wearing a hawaiian shirt.

Scientists: not historically known for their impeccable fashion sense.

OPEN QUESTION: Is it a good thing or a bad thing that if not for #Shirtgate, I would not have known about this comet landing at all?

The polo he was wearing in the photo I posted is what he wore during the mission and the rest of the day except during the interview itself

its weird that this was his idea of an 'interview shirt.' he put it on specifically to broadcast sensational news. ordinarily i would think this was a 'fuck you i'm the freaking best scientist man!! can't tell me what to do!!' move but the fact that he broke down crying while apologizing makes me think otherwise. unless he is some kind of brilliant performance artist, in addition to a great probe trick shot artist, in addition to being the owner of the greatest shirt in the world

Well idk, I guess I should have phrased it differently, maybe something more like...the upshot of #Shirtstorm is it brought a cool comet landing to my attention I'd otherwise have missed?

Yeah. It was like, a dark blue hoodie over a black polo. Pretty bog standard scienceman garb.

Anyway, there is actually something valuable to be discussed here, which is the cultural climate wherein a professional scientist felt obligated to offer "a heartfelt apology" within like 24-48 hours, a heartfelt apology for wearing a shirt.

The fact that he felt the need to do so is a clear indication that the PC police have gone too far.

i know what you meant. paying more attention to people getting mad at people getting mad about a shirt than freakign sick rocket trick shots 360 nollies means you are getting stuffed into a locker

Umm...yeah. Knew about landing on a comet for almost two months. Only learned about the shirt from this thread. But, I'm a science geek.

I wouldn't have known about either one if not for my girlfriend so um, I guess there's that. I honestly don't...internets, much. Try to avoid watching the news, also. So generally when I find out that a thing happened (i.e. I just found out that Anonymous hacked the KKK's twitter account...and also that APPARENTLY THE KKK HAS A TWITTER ACOOUNT) it's because she is paying attention to world events and mentions it in conversation.

As for the locker stuffing...come at me, bro?

its actually a clear indication that he's a coward and he's out of the tacky shirt club

I actually agree but...I think it's also probably of value to look at the societal forces that made him break down crying, here. I mean that must have been some serious twitter outrage.

Or he's the biggest pussy ever.

Or some combination of the two.

Um, they didn't. Rosetta/Philea is ESA, not NASA. NASA contributed but it's ESA's mission.

I agree with the basic sentiment though, more money into exploration and discovery can never be a bad thing.
Dang nabbit, shows what I know about the project! I think I should subject myself to Buzz Aldrin's Fists of Furious Justice!

Honestly, if I devoted years of painstaking research for a a single project only for the end result to be articles such as "I don't care if you landed a spacecraft on a comet, your shirt is sexist and ostracizing" I'd have a full-on mental breakdown (yeah, that reads like satire, but actually isn't). Like, the history books are not going to recognise Matt Taylor for his work, but for being Dr. Shirtgate. How insane is that?

Personally, the guy could have worn a shirt reading "KILL ALL BROWN PEOPLE" and I'd let it slide because come on he helped land a probe on a motherfreaking comet

he should have just launched the shirt to the moon so that everyone would have to look at it forever
