Also I would be AOK if we abandoned the term "Mary Sue/Gary Stu," since it has gone from a term with a particular meaning to "Thing I Don't Like," much like "hipster" and "SJW."
I've been saying this about "hipster" for years--
Hipster. Definition: anyone in the approximate locus of your age range who you don't like.
--but it definitely doesn't work for SJWs. I mean there are literally people who literally identify themselves as crusaders of the cause of "social justice" (LOL), so that is clearly still a term with a definable meaning.

When a word is used to tar crazies and rather mundane people with the same brush, it's kind of lost its meaning. Just because there's still examples of the stuff the term was coined to describe doesn't mean it hasn't been stretched past the breaking point to cover a bunch of unrelated crap.
I mean, maybe you use the term correctly, but obviously that's not how it's gone in the vernacular.
I don't know about that. I have yet to see any reference to an SJW that didn't refer to an SJW. I mean, there may be some, but not that I've seen.

Trust me, it's all over the damn place if you're at all involved in actual social justice stuff.
"Social Justice" is a hilariously/insultingly (pick one adverb depending on your mood) problematic concept to be in favor of, but I really can't discuss this here because I will get in trouble for dragging this thread off topic.

A lot of people seem to be seeing this from a rather fannish perspective of the self-insert "Mary Sue" wish-fulfillment power fantasy character. But the thing is, autobiographical characters as a literary phenomenon are much older than this modern context, and discussing something like Dante's Inferno in terms of this rather fannish lens is just inapplicable and inappropriate.

Not sure why mental masturbation would suddenly be not silly just because it's done artfully. Dante's still going, "I AM SO COOL AND I HANG OUT WITH THIS CHICK I'M OBSESSED WITH AND ALSO MY IDOL CARRIES ME AROUND AND ALL MY HATERS GO TO HELL BECAUSE THEY SUCK LOL!"
I mean, you don't need to be involved in fandom at all to get why that's extremely goofy. It just happens to be forgivably so because it's got other benefits.
