THE COUNCIL OF DEATH - LET THE BLOODBATH BEGIN!

The bells were sounding a solemn tune without melody. King George II of the Darkstars was dead, with no male heir to succeed him. His death had been sudden; He was taken by an illness, and succumbed within a fortnight.

There was talk of poison, of course, but no evidence.

If the king had been murdered, it would be difficult to prove, and impossible to determine the culprit. George Darkstar fell ill during the annual High Council. Every year, the black castle lent itself to discuss matters of war and peace, coin and taxation, resources and trade. It was held by the king and the four largest houses of Tellus: The Dragonfires in the North, the Oakleafs in the East, the Seabreezes in the South and the Ambers in the West.

With the king on his deathbed, it had not taken long for the four great lords to start accusing each other of treason, each hoping to claim the throne upon the king’s passing.

Lord James Oakleaf claimed the throne was his by right, as his son was betrothed to the king’s sole daughter.
Lord Nereus Seabreeze threatened to close down his port towns to outsiders and cut off trade with the rest of the country if he was not made king.
The young, brash Lord Langdon Dragonfire declared war on the other three houses, believing in the military power of the North to grant him victory and the throne.
Lord Ballos Amber, however, was calm; biding his time, hoping the other three houses would destroy each other, leaving him to claim the throne unopposed.

When the bells started ringing, the four great lords hurried to the messing hall, to be joined by the castle’s servants only moments later. After a few minutes, a teary-eyed Morgan Darkstar walked in. She looked up, and with a frail voice that betrayed her sadness, she said:

“My lord father, King George II, has fallen.”

As the lords studied each other’s faces, each of them realized one thing:
Before the moon had fully waned to signal the end of the annual council, three of them would no longer walk among the living, the fourth sitting on the throne that had belonged to George Darkstar just the day before.

What they did not suspect, however, was that amongst those gathered in the large messing hall of the black castle, there were some who would see four dead lords rather than three…

King George II of the Darkstars died night 0!
