I thought having them (Biggs, Wedge, and Jess) as playable characters would had been a cool idea, but some people don't think so. I want to see what everyone thinks.
Considering they die soon after they're introduced... I don't know if it would be worth it, I guess?
Unless your whole game was just a demake of the first Midgar chapter... so in relation to the timespan of the entire game, you'd been playing as those characters for a decent chunk.
But I don't think that's what you're doing, so never mind.
What complaints have other people made about that idea?

I guess they say things like they die soon... haha.
No I was just going to make them playable in the first mission, and any other time Barret is in the party.
I mean biggs and wedge in FF6 died soon, even though they were generic, but they do appear again in FF4. Sephiroth is a temp character as well, and eventually if I get that far I'll have to waste my time with him, no?

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't think it's necessary to rewrite every friendly character to be a combatant, just so the player can control them for twenty minutes. They're not fighters and they don't need to be. Especially in a game like FF7 where every character plays identically in 99% of circumstances. Who's in your party already barely matters at all.
If it were up to me, I'd actually be more likely to make Aeris, Cid, Red XIII and Cait Sith into non-playable characters. They can still join the party, but there's no reason for them to fight. They serve perfectly good purposes in the party even if they never join in battles, and turning them into extra clones of the other party members frankly cheapens their more important roles.

Well I was actually going to give them different weapons Locke, but what do you mean you wouldn't make Aeris, Cid, Red XIII and Cait Sith into non-playable characters?
In a way I kinda like this idea...

Sephiroth is more important to the entire story than Jessie, Biggs & Wedge. Having him as a briefly playable character was supposed to illustrate his strength and composure in comparison to Cloud. Then he goes crazy, so I guess you as the player appreciate his strength more because you know he's a badass - but now he's a deranged badass.
There's not really anything to gain from having Barret's friends as playable characters for the short time they appear in the story. They're important to only his character, anyway. Plus I guess they're supposed to make the player relate to the non-combatant masses that Shinra (and Avalanche inadvertently) screws over. So they obviously have a purpose, I just don't think making them playable characters would flesh anything out or be of any use at all.
e: it would be interesting to mess around with the original structure of the game. If you made those dudes from Avalanche playable, but turned the ones Locke has suggested into npcs, then that would be kind of intriguing. (Although personally I liked Cid & Aeris in battle more than most of the other characters. Well, more than Red and Cait Sith, anyway.)
Hmm... why then even have Yuffie as a playable character? She's not really vital to the main plot (even though she has cool attacks :/). You could boil down the playable party to the most essential members and have the other ones serve some other purpose.

...was that sarcastic? XD
e: I wasn't sure what to think of this "demake" concept originally. But if you mess around with the roles of each character, and battles etc. then it could be cool.

No lol.. I really mean it. Thanks for explaining to me about why Sephiroth was a playable character :) Sorry I was vague. I think I might still make them playable though :p
You've got a huge undertaking ahead of you, and you're going to add to it by doing the extra spriting and work to add three characters that are with you for a very short time that the original game didn't include?
There are many things I've heard people wish were in FF7, but having those three as playable was never one of them. Why not focus on all the required characters before you start adding ones that weren't playable originally?

Well... I actually read somewhere in gamefaqs someone wanted those 3 and dyne as a playable character. I think that's where I got the idea, and seeing biggs, and wedge playable in other ff games kinda made me want to do it also, but to answer your question about doing the required characters. If I end up not doing Biggs, Wedge, and Jess, then my only other two characters to worry about would be Cloud, and Barret. Yes you're right, this would make it easier for me, and less time consuming.
I have no seen someone on here thats up for the idea so I might have to scrap it, lol.

That makes sense, then (sort of). Stripping the party down, and in this case adding other members is feasible.
Are you planning on doing the entire breadth of the game? Maybe you could do an alternate story where Biggs, Jessie & Wedge don't die, and they accompany you to the centre of the planet rather than those other rag-tag dudes.
Could be interesting.

I thought about that, but people would hate me for changing the FF7 story XD
Yes I wanted to make the whole game, but right now my goal is up to the whole bombing mission.

On the other hand, you would be subverting the players' expectations, and that could potentially be more interesting (and memorable) than simply copying the original format into a 2D game. (But if you're concerned about the number of people that would play your game then... yeah. Maybe more people would be annoyed/disappointed than not, I dunno.)
I liked Jessie too. She had a nice, bittersweet charm for such a short-lived character.

Not necessarily.
What's your other game? (Oh yeah - the FF boss thing)
I actually liked that idea a lot when I read your topic about it the other week.
Honestly, don't listen to me - wait until you get more advice from actual experienced devs here, like the ones who've spoken in this thread, on making a decision about your game. A lot of what I've been saying has been pretty subjective anyway.
It's your project. If you want to do it a certain way, then by all means do so.
