I FIGURED I'D GO AHEAD AND ASK HOW MUCH SHOULD IT COST TO HAVE SOMEONE DRAW ENEMY DESIGNS?

Dude, if you're going to actually improve, you need to change your attitude to what other people say. All this:

Opinions are opinions though Im fine with them hovering in the air that's how I planned it. I only had my tablet to take a picture that's why the quality sucks.

author=Mr_TagoMago
Yeah I couldn't figure out how though. Not sure the text yelling from Sooz was necessary though. Kinda put me in a sour mood lol.

author=Mr_TagoMago
Here it not that I think its going to change anyones opinion.
I like it and that's what matters right?

just screams "I don't actually want to work hard and improve." And you know what? It's OK if you don't. It's absolutely, 100% fine if all you want is to make games that are for you, that only you care about, and that are tailored toward you having fun. I have a buttload of comics in my room that are absolutely that.

The thing is, if you're only doing it for you, don't consult others and don't bother showing anyone else. Personal things should stay personal.

If you're actually wanting to make a game for people other than yourself, then you need to ditch the attitude that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Especially if your audience is uniformly saying "this is not working."

There is a phrase in writing: "kill your darlings." It means that, no matter how proud you are of a bit you just did, no matter how much you love it and think it's great, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work and you need to cut it out immediately. If you're going to do any creative endeavor for any audience that isn't you, you MUST internalize this motto.

PS I "yelled" at you on the screenshot thing because it is not only a basic necessity for showing how your game is progressing, but it is absurdly easy to find out how to do it. If you are not willing to learn the very basics of how to share images on the internet, then you are really not deserving of any sort of attention.

Sorry was already upset over other things so I got defensive. I just personally thought it looked nice even with the floating thing so zI got a Lil butthurt if you will. I apologize and will try to improve.

I should just come out and say I have aspergurs and mood swings so even though I tend to get really defensive I get over it pretty quickly.

If you're going to be working with people- and making games for others- you're going to need to learn some good workarounds for those. At the very least, learn how to deal with your moods in private and don't let them influence your public behavior, especially in a format like the internet where your reactions are there forever.

If there is one thing I want to stress to every single creator on the internet, it's the practice of waiting until you've calmed down to react to things like this. Write out your response elsewhere, then go do something else for a while, then come back and delete what you wrote and write a new response, because your first one is always going to be super emotional, and that's the worst idea ever, because people are universally stupid when they're emotional.

God knows I'm learning that the hard way. Ive said many shameful things on the net and have an issue with letting douchebags get to me (Not suggesting anyone here is one). I'm taking a break from making the game in hopes it will help me calm my nerves I think shadows too much time on it for a first go and stressed myself over things any beginner will suffer from. I have a hard time keeping in mind that what I have is just a rough draft and I can always go back and improve everything. I really thought that photo looked fine besides the floating shadows. I was going for something fairly abstract but moody. I'd totally prefer to do psyechedelic back grounds like in Earthbound but I've no clue how.

If you wanted psychedelic backgrounds, you should've gone with the original VX; that program does it by default. Of course, you can't choose to use static backgrounds in that engine unless you code it in, but that's beside the point.

The only reason I'm so passionately hammering the stuff that I have into you is because I've seen so many fall through the gaps that it pains me to think we're about to lose another.

For a hint of what I've seen, please reference these:
Touhou Fantasy
Oracle of Tao
A majority of what happened surrounding these two games happened in the screenshot threads, but that's beside the point.

And Demonic Tutor had battlers floating above backgrounds and it didn't work. Then there's oh so many pretty ridiculous examples of people brushing off critique, thinking that they know best. This is one.

EDIT: Also, not that I want to make this about me, but spending some time in the bathroom thinking about this topic reminded me of my own journey to where I am now. You see, I started using RM2k back in 2002 and made some very basic stuff. I continued making games by my lonesome (without critique from online peeps) all the way up through 2005-06. By this point, I finally decided to share my work with a forum I used to frequent, when one of the members gave me some very simple critique that I still remember today. These things were:

1. The music should change between day and night in "Hero's Beginning" (first town).
2. The layout of the "Ancient Temple" isn't detailed enough to allow me to immediately know where I'm supposed to go after I fight Medusa. The Ancient Temple was originally a big, empty, square map with pillars along the outside and a wall of fire where the intended exit to the dock would be.

I shrugged this off as I had a wall of fire to show where you're supposed to go after the battle, but after some time, I saw the error of my ways and changed the dialogue of Medusa to tell the player that the wall of fire "to the north-east" has fallen, giving a hint to where they should go next.

Had I not listened to any critique, I'd likely still be making empty, square maps with no direction whatsoever, or I would have quit long ago because I hadn't received any praise for all the work I had put into this incredibly-basic level design.

You see, without critique, I'm left with the impression that all that will come from any creative endeavors will be sub-par piles of shit or abandoned dreams.
Um, Ace does it by default if you don't assign a background to a map. Just a heads-up.

Well I'm sorry if I came off as hostile towards you. I just felt like some of the criticisms you gave were sorta like criticizing an RPG because you can enter peoples houses and dig through there drawers and still there belongings and have a friendly conversation towards them. I just wanna save my actual good ideas for later I just want this one to be worth playing though I'm starting to doubt my own abilities.

Yeah I don't wanna just use the backgrounds they give you that just seems utterly lazy and makes it feel like less of the game is mine. Its one thing to use stuff I didnt make if I personally hand picked it. Ill admit I'm not so picky as far as tilesets.

I did not know this.
That default Ace background looks really shitty.

Just noticed your avatar isn't actually an uploading error.

True, but so does the VX one~ That said, I believe you can use images in your picture folder to change it (same with transitions~) Ace has a lot of hidden stuff that you never really hear about until you accidentally stumble over it. XD

By "stumble over it" she means "read the help file."
Well, yes, but the help file doesn't straight out tell you certain things like that having a certain option picked for type of tileset will change how table tiles are used. One option will add 8 pixels to the height of a table, putting the bottom parts (in the RTP, the legs) below the 32 pixels that one tile would make, allowing for a natural overlap between table and hero, while the other forces the grid on the table instead.

It also doesn't mention that you can walk UP onto roof tiles. That is, if you don't have a blocker below them (a wall tile) the bottom edge tile will be read as a ground tile. This allows for cliff tiles to be used easily - thus making tops of cliffs, adding a staircase up to them that allows you to walk on their tops.

Yeah I did a test run and people were walking on air and grsass was blocking my way lol.
They probably figure "Nobody is going to read the damn help file anyways, why spend time putting every little detail" heh
