So, as we all know, the Misaos are a pile of corruption and secrets and possibly also poop. And, anyway, just clicking a radio button can't explain why a thing is totally awesome and better than everything else.
So, here is a thread where you can share your choices for Bestest Game of 2014! Who's the bold newcomer who totally deserves all the attention and praise? Doesn't matter if it's RPG, non-RPG, demo, whatever! LAVISH SOME LOVE ON YOUR FAVORITE NEW GAMES HERE!

In spite of the RMN Plays event, I still don't feel like I've played enough of enough games released in 2014 to really have an informed opinion on this. And the sad thing is I'm pretty sure I've played more than most. Anyway, I've refrained from voting on the Misaos this year for the same reason.

Eh, just bring up some good games, then! I don't think anyone here is entertaining the idea that this is a strictly juried contest. Rather, it's an opportunity to advertise great games so other people might play 'em. :D
I'm going to go ahead and mention Soul Sunder. I feel like it did everything fantastic, with mapping being its weakest point. (I may be slightly biased as I was a tester for it, but I still feel like it holds up) :D
D is for Dungeon was pretty alright. It had its stumbling points, but it was a competent dungeon crawler. Looking back, it's got the best feeling ATB I've seen in an rpg maker game.
I played a LOT of the IGMC entries. You can see a bunch of mini-reviews here. The best ones I played, though, were Oneshot, Sunken Spire, Unraveled, and Trapped (which doesn't have a game page up here, unfortunately). Oneshot was probably my favorite of those, but they all had their strong points. If Trapped wasn't so goddamn buggy it'd be my favorite RPG this year--it's the best melding of horror and rpg I've seen. I think if Unraveled fixes some central story issues, it could be a fucking powerhouse, and it could still be pretty moving depending on the audience. Sunken Spire is just downright fun, and I'd say that it has the best progression mechanics out of all of the games I've played this year.

You are too kind, unity. ^^
Anyway, I'm glad this thread exists because most of what I've played this year actually didn't even make the Misaos. Mostly because they were completed around a month or two ago, and no one played them quickly enough to change their nominations. Plus, I played around 80% demos this year, so it's hard for me to recommend any completed games that were released.
That's not to say I don't have any I could wholeheartedly recommend, though. One completed game that I want to call everyone's attention to is The Book of True Will. I'm still going through it so I can't say for certain yet, but I would change (at least) my Best Characters nomination to this. I'm actually surprised at how much I'm enjoying it, because I don't normally play puzzle games.
At Last Alone: Rescue at Moranthia was also a surprisingly solid first game by djbeardo. While I wouldn't exactly call it Game of the Year- sorry, Overall Bestest Game- I left that game very impressed with how much effort was put into that game. My own first attempt at a game wasn't as polished as this is! Maybe it's just because my expectations were low, but they were still blown out of the water.
Speaking of effort, you can't really talk about it without mentioning, or even thinking about, Enelysion. Though I feel like talking about why that game is good is about as pointless as explaining basic algebra to a college graduate*.
EDIT: Oh wait, we CAN include demos here? Well alrighty then!
Everyone who knows anything about me knows that I adore Luxaren Allue. So much so that I could double the size of this post just talking about it. So I'll just say: Play it. Now!
Account Mu kept sticking out in my mind when writing this original post. Thinking about it now, I'm not entirely sure why, because it's not like it was jaw-droppingly amazing or anything. Maybe it's the atmosphere that gets me? Maybe it's the tone? The puzzles were very clever, but the game just continues to stay in my head, and I can't quite point to one reason!
... Maybe that is the reason?
* Yes I did just imply that anyone who doesn't like Enelysion is uneducated.

Thank you so much, Red_Nova! That's incredibly nice of you to say, and I'm really glad you're enjoying TBoTW so far.
The games I enjoyed most as an overall experience were definitely X-Noir by Volrath and ArtBane (not new to the site, but completed in 2014) and Sunken Spire by Indra and Fomar0153. They managed to shine in multiple areas and are absolutely worth every minute of play time. Both games weren't perfect, but definitely the ones I liked most out of all that I played.
I also want to specifically mention Soul Sunder by Red_Nova, which has a few rough edges but was still a way above average experience to play.

No really though I've been playing Last Minute Gift on and off for the past few weeks and I haven't had so much fun with an RPG Maker game in a long time. It feels like a complete package, from the graphics down to the non-linear design and the way that dodging encounters is set up to be unique from start to finish. The environments are unique and elicit different kinds of feelings, not to mention they're all beautifully drawn. Very rarely do you come across a complete package that isn't lacking in any department.

Do not worry, Unity is not allowed to die and I will get a necromancy license if she tries to.

Red Nova is mine until at least RoI is done. Maybe after that if he wants to collab more.

Agreed. I enjoyed Spire from start to end. Only thing which can throw it down for 'general player' is need to know some previous Arum games.
And massive shout out to Enelysion. Massive, cuz I've just completed my run and it was massive.

This is what I love about making games here. Even if your game doesn't get many downloads or anything, as long as it can find its way to a handful of people who enjoy it, then everything's worth it. I'll never need Misaos or anything else, as long as there are people who have fun with the games. Thank you so much, Cash ^_^
I realize I didn't even mention Remnants of Isolation. While I wasn't a huge fan of the romance aspect of the story (yeah, I know, I'm heartless ^^), the battle system was based on a simple but extremely clever idea. The custom art and music were also brilliant and brilliantly used, and it definitely had one of the most interesting settings I've seen in a long time.
Also, when talking about demos, I'm really hyped for the very promising community project Wyrm Warriors.
I can't wait for the full release of the incredibly quirky game Mayhem Maiden by Aegix_Drakan, either. Its challenging, cleverly designed combat is also right up my alley.

Let me first mention Czarina Must Die. It won an event early in the year, and might have been overlooked by other games as the year went on.
Though, if I'm going to go with a game that won an event, no game is more deserving than the winner of the IGMC, Remnants of Isolation. I think Liberty said it better than me, but, seriously, this game beat out, what, over two hundred others in that competition? I dunno. I just cannot believe that I was the only person that bothered to nominate it.

There were something like 800 games total, though I understand a lot of them were super lazy.* Not sure what the final tally was of games that were actually competition quality.
*As in like zero effort and full of bugs. I don't know why you'd bother to enter something like that when you could have spent the time you'd spent on the game watching some TV or looking at pictures of cute animals, but perhaps I am the strange one here.
