THOUGHTS ON RPG MAKER MV?
Posts
Sated
Development teams are constantly being pushed to release things sooner than they should. For example, Destiny was released before they could properly implement/revamp the storyline and it was the same storyline that was universally panned on release. An even more obvious example would be the PC version of the most recent Batman game because that was just awful.
I believe that this speaks more to how the costs of development for publishers have skyrocketed. (They need to release the game early so they can pay their developers with the revenue, THEN they can afford the time again to fix everything.)
I imagine that the costs are so high, that even big publishers are ever only two flops away from disaster, if their developers employs more than 100 people.
I don't have any data to back these thoughts up. But I do know that the cost matches Hollywood movies now. And when movies bomb...
I'd rather play with it now than wait to december, but by golly I better see some improvements to performance by then.
Now with the negatives out of the way, I wanna take time to say what I really dig.
First, the RTP actually looks really damn good. Seems eb! finally discarded that wretched 'purple-shaded' style they used for VX and then Ace. Now instead it's just darker of the same color and I can dig that.
What thoroughly impressed me was the music. After the clown-college freakshow that was Town5 from VX, now I'm hearing everything is atleast decent, and some near on par with Uematsu's work.
Battle3, Dungeon7, Theme4 and Town4 are among my favourites, but so much of this is good.

I thoroughly agree on the music.
I've never been fan of the music of previous RPG Maker engines, but this time around everything sounds good. I'm especially fan of some scene-tracks, theme-tracks and battle-tracks. Especially regarding the project I'm currently working on, everything fits so well.
I'm actually pretty sure that most of the standard music will work just fine with my project, and that is what makes me more happy than it should.
As with the previous versions of the music in the series, it takes a lot of inspiration from music that is already out there. This time the PS1 era, it seems. There's definitely some Chrono Cross copies in there that I've noticed and more than a few tunes have sounded familiar (I've yet to place them but it's older stuff, not really newer games, so the era seems right).
author=CrazeYou mean Boss-04?
remember the theme in rmxp that was ripped from phantom of the opera
because i do
It sounds more like one of Kefka's battle themes before it sounds like Phantom of the Opera.
You could have meant Church 1 or something else, frankly it's not that easy to spot. :0
In RPGmaker VX Ace there was a theme that started obscenely alike the Doom 95 suspense theme. (Dungeon9)
Scene 5 is also a blatant cover of Flowers Blooming in the Church.
Also in VX Ace Battle four sounds a little like the FFX Hurry theme for a bit.
Back on topic, really love some of the tiles, looking forward to DLC stuffs :O

Some of them borrow very, very heavily from certain pieces. Like, super heavily.
Remember the demo for like 2k or 2k3 way back? Where Don Miguel and friends wandered about? Remember the sound that was playing? It was a direct ripoff of the ending theme from Nintendo's Ninja Gaiden III.
MV feels way too much like a rewrite of VX Ace to me. If I wasn't appealed by the blocky interface of VX Ace, and visually unappealing characters (and need for transparency masking which screwed me over because I didn't know how to add new characters or chipsets), why would I shell out 79.99 for something exactly the same? And still no built-in battle charsets.

There's less similarities between MV and Ace than there were VX and Ace, I think.

Wait, is this a serious comment? Lol..
The addition of modern/futuristic tiles would have been a bigger deal to me if there were accompanying character sets...

There are some. They're in the Base Resources folder. You have to add them manually.

There's a reason for this - a lot are based on other high-end composers' works. Like said above, a few are based on Chrono Cross songs (which I maintain are better than Uematsu's works but that's just me~)
Unfinished.
Advertised features not easily accessible.
Can't seamlessly import graphics using previous engine's tileset boundaries (??????)
Autotiles and shadows are somehow WORSE.
So much for this piece of shit being the solution to my problem. Maybe in a year this will shape up into something good.

You never could except with 2k/3, so that's not an issue at all.
There's already a patch out for certain things like the tiling issue.
Can you post a link to this patch?
It doesn't make not including it in the base package any less stupid.
"They did it before" is also a pretty bad justification. Does Gamemaker make you rejigger all of your assets when a version update comes out?

After GMS removed filesystem controls for that sandbox stuff, yes. A lot of rejiggering had to happen for me
Sounds like a lot of disappointment and complaints, most of them pretty reasonable. I think that I might check it out just because I am blessed with a bit of disposable income and free time right now, and I'm curious.
I am pretty darn satisfied with VX Ace and all of the support and additional resources available for it, though, so an actual switch seems unlikely even if MV blows me away.
Edit: Hmm, 80 BUCKS? Maybe I'll just check out the trial for now.
Edit 2: 1.1 Gigababies? Dafuq?
