I thought it would be cool for us to share what has gotten us pumped up a little, you know that one thing in a game or something else that has really gotten you going and having ideas for existing and new projects of your own! It could also give us some new games and other things to look into!

Also remember! It doesn't have to be a game! Share a film, book, or other media that has touched you!

Currently what has been inspiring me is Yokai Watch it has an amazingly done over world with some really great graphics which are probably some of my favorite on the 3DS the world is super quirky and fun and the battle system is something totally different then I've played before! Even if you don't have a 3DS to pick it up I suggest watching the anime then cause it's still super cute and the series has such a cute concept!
I've got different sources of inspiration for different things. For anything medieval, my work is inspired by Masashi Hamauzu, who composed the soundtracks for SaGa Frontier 2 and Unlimited Saga, anything science fiction is inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner, And anything horror is inspired by Lovecraft and Silent Hill.

Music also plays a big part in inspiration too. A Sci-fi game, named Solitaure Unraveling, that I've got sitting on the bench is part inspired by the song of the same name by Mushroomhead.

Survival Horror games and SMT games are the two main inspirations for me, with the former being the primary. I've always loved the idea of making a turn-based RPG scary, and I've been trying to replicate that with my own. Of course, it's difficult to emulate the feeling of a Resident Evil or Silent Hill game in a static, turn-based environment, so different design choices needed to be made to compensate. So I play with the idea of eliminating healing spells and delegating it to finite resources. Of all the SMT games, I draw inspiration from the Persona games the most, particularly Persona 3 and 4. Symbolic boss fights representative of character's inner thoughts, dungeons centered around abstract themes, and other such awesomeness.

On top of that, I shy away from games where you essentially guide the protagonist through their trials and tribulations. I want the player to have some contribution to the story through their own actions, so games that judge the behavior of players beyond the typical choice box are always a plus for me (Silent Hill 2 anyone?).
What inspires me is anime that I have watched, and manga I have read. I do occasionally get inspired from JRPGs like Legend of Heroes: Trials in the sky, Star Ocean series, and Tales of series. I even got inspiration from the Elder Scrolls games before. However I actually get inspiration from dreams I have while I am a sleep. If I get a dream I really enjoyed, I write it down, and fix up, and put together the ideas so that they make sense.

God, so many things...
Take your pick, really. Cartoons are a big one, though.

One Piece, M*A*S*H*, Muppets, Reboot, Transformers, Terry Pratchett novels, DC animated films/shows, Power Rangers(sadly) or similar old Japanese super hero shows, old Godzilla movies, Asterix comics, and love the Hellboy art style. I barely read the comics. The art makes me drool.

These days I've been into the Shadowrun video games. Some of the concepts and characters in them were what finally helped nudge me a tiny bit out of these feelings of burnout and isolation I've had for months. I really like these kinds of settings where magic and advanced technology exist together.

Dragonfall and Hong Kong feel oddly relaxing for me to kill time while waiting for work to do, so while replaying those, I've been trying to think of my own novel quest objectives and elaborating on some messed up character backstories. I guess it helps a little that the writing style of those games (HK mostly) kind of reminds me so much of my own with Catharsis: heavy on dialogue, with the characters' actions usually described in narration instead of being performed by the character models/sprites themselves, haha. :)
Admittedly, co-oping Yoshi's Wooly World has put me in the mood to think about making a co-op platformer with my sister.
Not much has really come to mind yet, though.
My own JRPG-oriented game becomes less appealing to me since I feel a strong level of customization would undermine that their skills and stats reflect their personality. I personally feel highly inspired to make a game somewhat like World of Warcraft. It's a nice game with a number of creative ideas, but I'm not fond of anything below level cap being way too easy, the main skill factor being mashing your skills at maximum speed and having to rely on teammates so much (especially so in raids).

I recently saw Fury Road, which I wound up loving, so that gave me sone good ideas.

I've also been getting into The Wizard of Oz as of late. I watched the 30s version a few days ago and now I'm in the middle of going through the Cinar animated series. I'm probably going to read the book when I get back to Toronto.
I inspire myself. But bouncing off ideas from like-minded individuals from a good Skype sessions works wonders as well as looking at pixel-art from SNES classics.
Games with an old-timey setting (Fallout, BIOSHOOOCK) really sparked a passion for those kinda games within me. Also the entire dreamy atmosphere Coraline had... (And that soundtrack, oh boy) I JUST LOVE THAT MAN

Ohh also on the art side of things... INU Curry (the artists that worked on Madoka Magica), David Roberts and Edward Gorey are my patron saintssss

Lately, Metal Gear Solid V. It is probably the best JRPG I have ever played, and I will be very sad when I've run out of content. I don't know if there will ever be another game with this much loving attention to detail ever again.
Right now, FF Type-0!!

I've been playing it for a while now. Haven't finished it yet though, since I'm trying to reach max level on all characters (because, why not?). I'm actually doing my best to replicate/borrow certain features of Type-0, and have been throwing them into my current project. The ones I've done so far are the skill upgrade system and the eidolon summoning stuff, and am working on having that re-battle thing (hostile presence) Type-0 had at the end of overworld encounters since it fits rather well with the back-end side of the rest of my game.

Mana games for me have been a big inspiration in my games and graphically. Like, they usually have a vibrant and nature inspired world that I really enjoy.

(Magical vacation for this one)

I definitely take inspiration from other games and sources as well like Oblivion and early FFs.

Earlier Oshun days it was a lot more early FFs like FF5, 6, 7 but I found I've been taking more inspiration from real life, not as in "making it 3D realistic graphics" but like going on a vacation to a new place, enjoying scenery, that kind of thing is really enjoyable and I felt the most inspired to create after coming back from someplace new and fun. I keep photo references of places I wanna take inspiration from around.

It was definitely in mid 2000s where I really got to enjoy working on the tropical kind of setting, and have loved it since.

Oshun! Such inspiration. Games like Mana truly are worthy of note. Legend of Mana and Chrono Cross were huge for me in the late 90's. I still pick them up for a playthrough now and again. The weath of fun characters alone get me fizzing with excitement to Create!

Oh, how could I forget LittleBigPlanet. That game knocks me out of commission for weeks at a time. At the end of it, I am heavily inspired in some way or another, ready to draw.
Dragon Age has been hugely inspiring. Retroactively, FFIX is one of the most influential games I've played.

Horror movies in general (for ideas that aren't strictly horror). Particular movies that stick out for recent ideas are Trauma, The Night Digger, Fire Walk With Me, Hausu...

I love ultra "feminine" stuff like Sailor Moon, FFXIII-2, and the aforementioned Hausu. Also, Labyrinth (R.I.P. Jareth & his ludicrous pants).

My most recent assault of inspiration has originated from a tv series called Fortitude. It is my new love.
Games like Catherine inspire me constantly--attempts to deal with adult information that is neither too massive (save the world!) nor too interpretive (love will heal a frozen heart!), all with a sort of supernatural or magical-realism approach that still makes for good gaming.

Although I have to admit that Harvest Moon is my current driving inspiration in game design.
