They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

ECT isn't about making things hurt; it's given under anaesthesia.
Well, I didn't mean to imply that, and apologize if I did. It is simply a different use for shocks, since Corfaisus seemed taken aback by the idea of shocks being useful in any way.
There are times that shocks are useful but not to this type of point. It's been already prescribed and... I'm still curious of why they go through it despite knowing of its consequence.

NP, just wanted to make sure accuracy was going on, since the popular image of ECT is basically "mental patient in the electric chair."

What "consequence" are you talking about? There's side effects of varying severity for any treatment, and ECT is generally for really severe issues that don't respond to other treatments. It's not like it's the first go to.
@Sooz: I'm talking about what Corfaisus said. Still, why do that even so that ECT is not effective against schizophrenia? I'm still wondering why...

*As in, it's not an effective antipsychotic, though it is used to treat a symptom associated with schizophrenia.
And even if it generally works, doesn't mean it has to every single time, either. Anecdotal evidence is always a lil bit tricky. The use of it certainly has changed over time, too.

...because different illnesses respond to different treatments? I'm not sure what question you are asking.

For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
@sooz: I'm pretty sure that's the reason why.

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

That quote is out of context if you use it for anything other than forces between objects in mechanics.
The entire point was that ECT is not used to cure schizophrenia. It may have been in the past, but it isn't now. So it doesn't matter that ECT is not effective against schizophrenia.

I... I can't even begin to imagine what you thought that even meant, KH. o_O
I think he's thinking more along the lines of the Butterfly Effect?
Watch Jurassic Park. Ian Malcolm explains it pretty well

Ohhhh, so ECT treatment causes dinosaurs to run amok! It all makes sense now!
Great idea. Instead of traveling the world seeing things, I can just pay to have those experiences downloaded into my brain.
I'll expect them to be significantly cheaper than the real deal.

People do tend to be happiest anticipating their vacations, rather than during them...
I'd like to alter the memory of receiving two chicken sandwiches from Wendy's instead of my triple cheeseburger and not finding out til I get home. They got one job, put the burger in the sack. Not going to sleep well tonight.

But..... You got two for the price of one!
It's a sign. Something good is going to happen to you. Don't let the mind-wiping erase that!
