HIGHLANDER'S REALM ("D&D" FORUM RPG)

The Uruk'Lai says I can't scare him, but I can see the blood drain from his face, his pupils dilate and his knees knocking. "Yes. Yes, I do think I can scare you. I strongly recommend that you go hide behind your much wiser friend."
((Fearful, Frogge, it might be best to use quotation marks over what your characters are actually saying aloud, so we can distinguish them from everything else))
Interesting, I've never seen a Uruk'Lai before in my travels, so I don't know whether this thing is a strange beast, or a competent individual.
"All life knows fear, creature" I say to the Uruk'Lai. "You should use it to your advantage. That is, unless you prefer to die right now."
I turn to address the half-elf, still clenching my dagger just in case.
"You're friendly, eh? That's a rather conspicuous thing to say to a stranger. What proof do you have of this?"

"Yes...taking hostages is an interesting reaction to surviving a demon attack. It certainly wouldn't be my first fear reaction." Perception 9 +5. The half-elf is carrying a hand cannon. The Uruk-Lai, for his monstrous appearance, and massive strength, seems to be a bit of a pushover. Thankfully, his prodigious strength is offset by a timid nature. His legs appear quite strong. Thankfully, if he attacks me, his fear will negate his combat effectiveness, but speed and avoidance will be the key to defeating him if it comes to that. The half-elf looks a bit more confident and I've clearly brought a knife to a gunfight. She's also quite charming. I'll need to guard myself against persuasion. Anything else I notice, Seiromem will have to tell me.
I'm pretty sure I can bully the Uruk-Lai around if he gets out of hand, but the half-elf will be no pushover. This is enough to convince me to change my tact. "Enna, perhaps it would behoove us to take our new friend at her word for the time being. Perhaps we can help her housebreak her traveling companion." I don't know if Enna can pick up on subtleties but I try to put a warning edge in my voice to suggest that there's more to these newcomers than meets the eye.

((I think that'll fall on Perception skill, right? If so...))
I take a moment to listen to Leara's advice. Perception(Wis) roll: 8 (-1) = 7 ((That doesn't seem good))

It would fall under insight, but the roll is basically the same so you don't really notice.
Anyways, Leara also notices the demon has smudges of blood on his face.
Everyone make a perception check.

((That's better! btw what range of numbers generally indicate that you've succeeded in a check and what don't? I get that the 6 in my last roll would probably mean my insight check failed, but what value would have been the minimum value for success?))
Edit:((@Fearful - I pretty sure it's a d20, and yeah you add/subtract whatever bonus you have for the stat the skill uses (which is Wisdom in this case), to get your final value.
Also, for newcomers like me, here is the D&D 5e handbook for some reference.))

(Frogge, I guess your last post on the previous page was directed at me, not at piano, right? If so, your character is now aware that someone or something has been spying into their thoughts.
Also, does radioactive pollution even exist in the world of this game? It seems to me like too modern a concept for a classic fantasy setting.)
I put my hand on Enna's shoulder and say in what I imagine to be a calming manner: "Well, she did not attack us, which seems like a good sign of being friendly, would you not agree?
I will have to decline the offer of being taken hostage, unfortunately. It is not a custom I am particularly fond of - last time it turned out to be rather dreadfully boring. But please, sit down with us and tell us more about your confrontations with demons."
I rolled a 16 for Perception, resulting in a total score of 18.

It was meant for piano, since he was the one who used the perceive or whatever thing on me.
And yeah, I guess pollution is a little out of place, but it was more of a radioactive explosion really.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

author=RattyIt is different for every event, depending on how hard the task is. For example, a medicine check to heal a broken bone using a splint and cast in a doctor's office will be pretty low, maybe only 5 or so. A medicine check to heal a broken bone using your sword scabbard and a ripped piece of your shirt while standing on the deck of an airship in the middle of a tornado would be extremely high, maybe 40 or more, which means even if you rolled a perfect 20 you wouldn't be able to succeed without a lot of skill points.
btw what range of numbers generally indicate that you've succeeded in a check and what don't?
For perception rolls in particular you will almost never be told if your roll succeeded or not, because if you knew it failed, it'd defeat the purpose.

(So, what did I learn when I read your thoughts, then?
Yes, I have decided that reading their minds is how Aldus says hello to new people now. It's basically the same thing as asking a few polite questions about their background, right?)
(Frogge, that's not the kind of information I acquire with with perceive. Perceive picks up on subtleties in your appearance and the surrounding environment. For example, I noticed the blood splatter on you. If I had rolled a little higher, I might have noticed that the blood was fresh or that it probably came from a magical creature. Your paragraph goes more along with mind-reading.)
Who else thinks full-fledged D&D on an internet form is both too slow and unnecessarily complicated?
Because I would much rather do something more simple now.

Oh... I was really enjoying it, I was just waiting to not be unconscious.
I mean, it's your call, but I'm finding this super duper fun!!

(I...it's your game. I thought it was fun when everyone was here posting. I guess it's no big deal if you change the play format so long as we can continue as before.)
Awww and I just began too :(
Well, whatever you say I guess. It's your game after all.
Well, whatever you say I guess. It's your game after all.
Honestly? I think the way we've been doing it up until now was just fine.
There were a lot of times when we didn't even need a lot of input from the GM to interact, and the rolling has been much less of a hassle than I feared it would be at first.
Only with out currently rather large amount of players, progress can be a little slow. (Especially fearful has an unfortunate tendency not to post anything for a long time.) But if we can all agree to try our best to participate regularly and do our best to understand the rules and not unnecessarily complicate stuff, I don't see any reason to really change much.
Oh, and Seiromem, if you want some help with the "administrative" part for the game (for example keeping track of character sheets, stats etc.), I'd gladly do that for you. I have a pretty good memory for those kinds of things.
