And don't just add 1 or 2 or whatever to the end of your current password. You'd be surprised how easy a password like MuhPssword2342 actually is to crack.

Yeah, I read a book once on hacking and it is really scary how easy a hacker can break a password if your password is not something crazy like: "!h4T3H4cK3r$Th@tHaCkWy4Cc0uNt".

The punchline is that sample password is still super tame and very easy to hack. No words. No l337 speak. Nothing coherent whatsoever.

You want a somewhat secure password? Try something like this:
N&^bn0k3,.d3,.d 76c6&3-098j(%R3p,mrn64fbn24 vj,0.-0(_&RE$R%T@jmfkOL_:cenmBF t, C^&#NB89,.3/
Oh dear god o.O ... that is...well, that does look secure.
And here am I only using song lyrics with punctuation.

Good luck remembering that password, though. I'd do the old "Please remember this password for me, dear internet browser" thing and then my accounts would go bye-bye.

Yeah, I would do the same. I have trouble remembering most of my easy passwords much less that monster of a password.
I've been using the same handful of passwords since 1998 ._. I hope it wasn't my fault this time.
Not this time. ^.^;

Here's the thing: Unless you're some prominent person like Donald Trump or EXTREMELY UNLUCKY, most hackers don't even know who you are and have no reason to come after you. Because of this, more often than not you're defending yourself against a program, not a human. A program can go through an entire dictionary of words and try millions of different word combinations for your password in milliseconds.

And God help you if you use the same password for different accounts. Never, ever do that.

Passwords like what I showed before are EXTREMELY difficult for a program to crack because of it's length and randomness. Imagine all the possible combinations of letters, symbols, and numbers that could have possibly gone into such a lengthy string of characters.

Good luck remembering that password, though. I'd do the old "Please remember this password for me, dear internet browser" thing and then my accounts would go bye-bye.

You're absolutely right in that you're never going to remember that. Luckily, you won't have to! And I don't mean letting your browser save your password. Best not to do that, either. A really quick and easy way to store passwords is to open up a document in Word to just store account names and password. Then, when you go to log in, just open up the doc, highlight the password, and copy/paste it into the password section.

As for THAT document's protection, write down a lengthy password on a sheet of paper and store in your home. A hacker can't get what is never on the computer in the first place. Is it tedious? Yeah. But imagine your bank account going through what we just did. I'd say the hassle is worth it.

This comes with the side benefit of instant protection against a keylogger, a super quick and easy script to write that reports your keystrokes to an attacker. A keylogger isn't hacking, at least not in the sense that someone is breaking into your system, but it is a dangerous program that's relatively simple to make.

And now I await attempts to hack my RMN account. If I start posting butts everyone on the forums I swear it isn't me!

That sounds scary. I am starting to think I should change all my passwords now...

It's also important to not be paranoid and realize that you're insignificant and severly unimportant in the grand scheme of things and that you can also relax if your password to this site in particular is something like "chocolate" or whatever.
I just use a password manager like Keepass. It's designed around account management and security, and it takes the security of its process and database seriously. It comes with a password generator too and you can adjust its criteria so it's easy to manage. I just have one big password I need to remember: The master password for your database file!

Also not relevant to RMN but try to use two factor authentication wherever you can. Also store emergenc removal passwords somewhere in case you lose your phone.

Yeah, this too. Didn't mean to scare anyone too much. I'm sure here on RMN you can get away with whatever. But as for your bank account passwords and other important accounts? It's something to consider.

I do it for all my accounts because it's easiest for me. I regularly forget which route to take to get to my classes, so something as sensitive as a password is something I make sure to document somewhere.
Just add a symbol to your passwords. That alone will greatly increase the effort needed. Also make it at least 10 characters long. Sure that wacky password example would be very secure, but so would F@rt1C@stle2.

Yeah, I kind of figured.

I do not do banking online I never thought it was a good idea or safe. Although, if I ever did I doubt anyone would be able to steal anything as I have no credit cards or money.

Is that true? That four common words really are safer than a word with a bunch of symbols replaced? So it's the length of the latter password? Huh.

I tier my passwords. Stuff like my junk mail accounts get pretty simple, easy ones. My primary e-mail and work-related passwords are far more complex. A previous one that I no longer used involved a huge string of character names in orders that were specific to me with numbers thrown in between some and symbols in a specific order at key points. It's a massive password but very easy for me to remember.

Then there's my password for banking and such where I have to put myself in a zen-like state where memories become lists of objects and as the ambient sound of electricity in the wires tickles my soul and says it wants to marry and have children my true password is revealed directly to my central nervous system, which then makes my fingers hit the keys in the proper order due to my mist mind thinking I'm playing an alien instrument called a S'bakorlr. My bank rated the password as "very strong".

For a long time, one of my passwords was copy/pasted from opening a non-text file in Notepad and grabbing some of the garble. I've had some passwords that use ascii characters or Japanese and French but those are usually not accepted.

Here's a nice video if you want to be really, really paranoid about your passwords. It's one person cracking thousands of hashed passwords in real-time. The whole thing's worth watching, but the non-obvious part starts at the timecode: https://youtu.be/7U-RbOKanYs?t=13m46s
