Qheretic's old site, seems seperate from The Heresy as that has no record other than the GGZ merge. I like how the rm2k tip of the day is some advanced pseudo C++ loop. Like yeah, quick tip for a noobie from the year 2000. Other than that it has some neat screenshots of Exile and a Gamelisting containing notable rm2k games at the time.

The Return of Gaming Ground Zero 6-26-01
GGZ is back! It officially re-opened today, after the cancelation of it's merge with rpg2knet. They decided a merge would not be the best thing for the rm2k public and should be fully operational soon. Also, along with the re-opening, GGZ's staff should soon be finishing up with their muchly anticipated RPG, Kindred Saga. It will feature a great new cbs programmed by QHeretic and will portrait an astounding array of gfx, music, and story. For more info, go to their website at GamingGroundZero.com. Also, Kevin Moore from SquarEarth is re-designing the site, so the new layout should be faster, easier to use, and look much better. According to Q, it should be completed in about a week, as well as Kindred Saga.

So I joined just to necro this thread - I was just searching GGZ after a discussion with friends about old internet forums
I admined GGZ at 13 years old under the sn NanaoThrowsPetals. Actually still in contact with some old members on Facebook now. Only really contributed in the writing forums. Really was my intro into the internet in general. Sad to know it's gone now...

Edit: I recall having good rapport with moo especially over AIM. But I knew she was not on good terms with all.
Indeed I do. Although in the heyday of GGZ, I was at some place that I think (dear god MEMORY) was called Dark Dominion, and then at GW (fuck saltworld).

I recall that Wishmoo was a very controversial figure back in the day.

Part of the reason why I started this thread was to get to know more about GamingGroundZero, cause I never got the chance to know it any better. If you have any stories, please feel free to share them.

At some point we wanted to do an interview with you guys, but it's really hard to get in touch with a site that no longer exists. So if you know of a way to contact them, lemme know, maybe even through a PM. Because, I really want to know more about this site.

Like the most I know about GGZ is like what StormCrow mentioned; that Wishmoo was a controversial figure, and that's where the story usually ends. But I'm pretty sure there's more to this story because it shows in their games.

Like, what was really neat about early rpgmaker communities especially GamingGroundZero, was that, because these communities came about, when jrpgs were arguably at the height of their popularity, you got games that really understood how jrpgs worked, not just mechanically but thematically as well.

Like another game I played from GamingGroundZero was Frontier Extremes. It was yet, another rpgmaker game that parodied the jrpg genre, but what was really interesting about Frontier's Extreme, was the first section of the game, It played a lot like a section from Lucas Arts' adventure game "The Secret of Monkey Island". Where you were going from place to place, trying to figure out who needed what item in order to progress through the game, and after you found that item you'd get a punchline and the punchlines were usually really funny. After that section was over however, it turned into more of a traditional rpg, but it was a race towards the end, like near the end of Final Fantasy Legends 2 where you were just battling monsters with really high level spells in order to save the world (I think). I never had a chance to beat it, so I'm not sure, but it was really interesting to find a game that understood these concepts so well.

And that's why I feel like GamingGroundZero is still worth talking about. I may not have known the community directly. But I do know their games. And I think it's worth investigating what was happening in the early 00's just to figure out why these games stood out.

EDIT: I wanted to do more with this thread, but I'm kind of tied up with IRL responsibilities at the moment, but I wanted to make sure I got in touch with you first, rikihiggins. Thank you, it really means a lot that you took the time to respond.

But yeah, if you have any stories about GGZ, please feel free to share them.
Okay so this is actually - you have to understand how wild it is that I actually have this at all but I have some physical printed pages of like two threads off the GGZ forums from 2004. I have gotten rid of like, so many of my possessions so it's insane that I have this at all. It's like a post from Indogutsu about a recipe and then a writing plotline brainstorm thread. I can maybe scan some in if anyone's interested.
I wish my brother was alive to tell you more - he was the one who got me added to GGZ in the first place and was the one who was actually fiddling around trying to make a game. I was mostly online for social reasons (homeschooled). He was very inspired by the games he found on there and we were trying to make one of our own. I can find old forum posts on other sites by him with a link to our demo but it gives me a 404. So that's probably gone. (Unless anyone might know how I could find it...I know the name...)
I could put you in contact with maybe 5 former members.
I actually ended up dating a member for like a year and a half long distance. We met twice IRL once his side of the country and once mine.
The community was super tight knit from what I recall. It was huuuuge part of my life for quite a few years.
I barely have a memory of what the forum looks like so it'd be cool to see anything resembling old history of it. As for the the old forum posts outside GGZ you can use something like https://web.archive.org/ you can't search for keywords but you can use direct urls to find anything that might be archived (i tend to find these urls by looking for broken links on existing sites). Sorry to hear about your brother and all, it's insane how many life things have probably spiraled from just GGZ alone. Though of course that applies to most of the world, a lot of things happen around us that we don't witness.

Anyone who grew up on SNES games can just look at old magazines or a detailed wikipedia article. But this forum thread and a few scattered blog posts is so far the only detailed proof of GGZ's past existence. So any added context would be really useful.

Wow. You're actually exactly right. I hadn't thought about it before but part of the reason that games like Diary Of A Madman (anyone remember Diary Of A Madman) and A Blurred Line and others influenced me so much is that I was a young teen when I played them.
I had a random guy message me on FB one day praising Descendant of Truth. I thought he was either A. Trolling, or B. Utterly insane.

After all this time though, maybe not? I mean, the download for it was on GGZ for its lifespan pretty much. I still use his post for inspiration sometimes.

Strange revelation I came across when looking over old GGZ games. Anyone paying attention to indie games has likely heard of Timespinner right? The kickstarter sidescroller game with time manipulation and such.

There's a GGZ game with the same title, same protagonist name and well, same character design. It's not an RPGMaker game, it's coded in some python engine. Has a ton of midi music from Final Fantasy and MMX though:

Mention the name in this thread and we'll try and find it on our spare time. I can't guarantee that we'll find it, but we're usually lucky. Recently I found a 2001 version of Kindred Saga that included the original readme file that Qheretic made for the game on a spanish rpgmaker community website. If the game you made with your brother was spread around wide enough, it may have ended up on one of these sites as well, or someone might still have it.

But yeah, very much looking forward to the scanned recipe/brainstorm thread you mentioned. ideally, it'd be so cool to have like, all the gaminggroundzero members come in and just gab about the past, because a lot of the stuff you guys did was very influential for us. So I'll probably get in touch with ya at some point.

And my condolences about your brother, It's never easy losing a family member. :(

Wow going into this thread has been some crazy nostalgia. I've been reading site names I haven't seen anyone else write in such a long time! I'm one of the old hats, so I actually remember going to most of these sites man.

A few posts up someone mentioned Dark Dominion - this is pretty interesting and an interesting story. Because this site eventually became Dev Empire - which eventually also failed but at one point I had wound up with the sites files! As in the actual code for the site.

I was never really active on Gaming Ground Zero but I remember mining it for ideas and just generally browsing it. As others have stated, I distinctly remember Wishmoo being very controversial - but this is likely also due to the fact that I was active on RPG2knet, where I think the drama originated between the users there! Actually was Graming Ground Zero a splinter off of RPG2knet? I seem to remember Wishmoo having been an admin there originally. Wouldn't have been the last site to splinter off of that one - I admined at another for quite awhile, Blade2k.

Theres a bunch of other smaller sites that have been basically all but forgotten. I see a few users from the now and then (looking at you Gretgor) like Ultima Island, and then RPGFreeze, and a handful of other small sites that sprung up and vanished. All of the large sites from that time period are gone or just kind of a shell of their former selves (i.e. Salt World, and the fake2knet forums)
I was on gamingw.net, then Indie Gaming Portal, Ghostlight Games, Loose Cannon Gaming (kinda), Sky Tower Games (briefly), Township Games (lol), and maybe one or two other small sites.

Then I lodged myself into RMN like some tick or parasite back in 2007 (thanks for the invite Craze!), and haven't left this host since.

after RMN, I did also join a few other sites, like RRR, RMWeb, HBGames, RMRK... but I've completely tailed off on those sites (even before some of theme ceased to exist)

RMN is my only home now.
This has been a wild thread to read and has given me a lot of context and flashbacks to a time I don't give much pause nowadays.

I was known back in the pre-GGZ into GGZ days as "Silvereye", often (back then) referred to as one of the earliest of members of GGZ. Spent a lot of time in AIM chats with Illustrious (sp?), Don, Q, and Wish and a bunch of the other folks from those days.

Back in that day, I was just a late elementary school into early middle school kid in rural America with a shit internet connection and a passion to make games, fueled by LucasArts and Square games. I essentially stumbled into RPG Maker, and I genuinely don't remember how I came across Q, but soon I was a "staff" member on his pre-GGZ site.

I remember looking up to Q a lot. He was a little bit older (in high school at the time), but he experimented all the time with web tech I didn't know like ColdFusion. I remember logging into the early GGZ admin panel through Coldfusion and thinking it was the coolest thing, like I was working at some futuristic company.

Those early days had Illustrious teaching me and critiquing me all the time on pixel art. Those lessons were incredibly valuable to me. I used to do a lot of character art sets and just threw up packages of them onto the site for anyone to use. I also used to religiously search Japanese RPG Maker sites for their chipsets/charsets and lifted them for distribution on GGZ. I know now of the questionable (to say it lightly) ethics of that, but my middle school self had no idea. I was just contributing to a site I loved and felt like I was part of a great community.

My specialty in that day was prototyping new systems. I used to spend a lot of time trying to do, say.... real-time action, side-view turn-based combat (which Q pulled off before me but I always wanted to figure it out for myself), day-night cycles, etc. Whatever prototypes I came up with, I threw on the site as a "tutorial" and let folks improve as they wanted. My pet project was a full adaptation of the Dragonlance Chronicles book series into a set of games, something which I only ever showed brief demos, screenshots, and pics of character sets over time. Sad to say I never finished it and don't have a single backup that I've found yet of the game.

The lead-up to RM2k3 was a ton of trying to translate news sites and forums from Japanese ALL THE TIME. There were tons of late night chat room sessions with Don as we pasted links in yahoo translator or whatever the heck we used.... We were dying to know the new feature set, the # of variables limit, how many chipsets we could import, etc. For every right thing we probably had 20 wrong things from bad translations and us translating forum gossip and assuming it was fact.

Wish was incredibly supportive of me. I remember she always called me "Silver" and was quick to correct anyone who thought I was fake when I'd take years off and come back to chat a little more with the community. When I was in late high school, she checked in if I was going to pursue games and programming for my college studies. I believe that's the last time we interacted, and that was over 10 years ago.

Since then, I went to college and now work as an engineer in the game industry. College pretty much sealed the deal for me moving on. My posts on the forums became a yearly "hey everyone," and wondering why content kept disappearing from the site as time went on. It felt like our old history was being lost. For whatever drama existed at that time, beef between websites, forum mobbing, me getting IMs that I can't talk with ex-staffers anymore, etc etc.... It is my early foundation of how I got into game development. And for that I'm thankful. So thanks for the thread for taking me down memory lane, and I guess filling in a lot of gaps that my young naive self didn't know to recognize or chose to forget :)
That's really cool to hear man, your username sounds familiar. Though I was just an outsider going through resources back then. Did you go by Silver X also? I'm interested in the sprite events like the Sprite Warz/Sprite Fights the pixel artists did back in the day. The custom arting was a pretty cool aspect of GGZ.

Like Darken, I too was on the outside looking in. But even though, I couldn't interact with the site directly, it was really cool to see that gaminggroundzero was still around in 2016, even though, all I could do at that point was download the games and access various resources. - it's just weird how the site just suddenly disappeared. So if you have an idea of what happened near the end or could give us more details, ftrbreed, please let us know.

Like, GGZ going down, got us to start talking about rpgmaker history and what I noticed over the years, is that, a lot of current rpgmaker communities, are going through the same things GGZ went through as well. It seems almost inescapable. So I really want to learn everything I can from this, to try and prevent it from happening in the future or if not that, at least take the necessary steps so that nothing important is lost. A lot of the cool stuff you guys did in your games, I'm using today to teach new users and create new games with - like, even though rpgmaker is a hobby, this is why it's important to hold onto this old stuff and it's really cool to say that. XD

it's also really cool to see a lot of guys, start out on GGZ, working with rpgmaker2000 and progress to other things - you mentioned you're currently working as an engineer in the games industry. Could you tell us what's that like or what games you're working if any? Dude you're living the dream! That's so cool!! Please tell us more!

I did not, my only name I went by through the GGZ community was Silvereye. I do remember other Silver* people which made the chat rooms rather confusing since Wish always referred to me as "Silver"

Unfortunately I have no idea what happened. When I initially tapped out (we're talking.... 2004/2005), Q had been attending university I believe, so he was no longer actively involved. Illustrious (as mentioned previously in the thread) had been pushed out or left GGZ. Wish was the one I still had a connection with, and it seemed she was trying desperately to hold the ship together. Felt every time I came back to the site, a whole host of our old resources were gone, tutorials wiped, etc. The biggest hit for me was when the old forums had been wiped or moved to a new forum host. I had an absolute TON of interactions with people on those forums that were lost forever. At that point, I saw little reason to go back.

That's really hard, as you're likely finding out. Forums drop support, servers go down and never come up again, etc. Even sites like archive.org are imperfect (as you can see with some of the deeplinked GGZ archives which work yet none of their child links were archived. I for one would love to see an archive of the Staff page so I can find out what the heck my bio was. I remember my avatar pretty vividly 'cause it was some terrible photoshop I did with). This is going to continue to be a problem until communities find a good way of preservation, which is also an ongoing and very serious problem in the gaming world in general. We are losing our games and source code at an alarming pace.

I'm currently an operating systems engineer at the Xbox team. I worked on shipping features such as the multitasking Guide, system settings, the Games with Gold program, Xbox Game Pass, and most recently shipped the Xbox One X and S consoles. My interactions with shipping game code directly are limited, but I have provided a ton of consulting and bug fixes with plenty of games over the years.
