Rumor

Apex of falsity, disinformation and myth. He is a prominent character in folklore, where he is depicted as having the legs of a goat, an extremely prominent red tongue and a genial temperament. It is usually assumed that all Rumor stories are lies, told by Rumor himself long ago or planted into the mouths of bystanders by Rumor himself; this is in direct contrast with all other stories, which are thought to contain at least a grain of truth.

There have been many practical jokers who have taken on the name of Rumor to exercise their craft in secrecy, but the most famous is said to have forged Halprog's Letter, which surfaced in Phlegmatic Pond some years before and prompted a barrage of Halprog sightings and derva worship, among other things.

Would it be at all possible for me to call dibs on MASTULA, KING OF THE SHADOWS. I'm not ready to make an entry on it yet but I want to reserve it for later.

Derva

Veriag vernacular for "demonic," usually used to describe cultists who thrive on the ideas of Halprog and other such creatures. Unknown to all but the most interested historians (such as Marquis D'Avola's exiled brother, Erad the Illspoken), however, is that the term is derived from the myths of Mount Altyra. Rather than being demonic at all, "derva" was part of the Conception spell Yrmisa realib u'derva eradi that was chanted when humans were first concieved on the mountain according to the myths. The bastardization of the term was formed due to the spell being repeated constantly in the minds of humans when they are infants, the most accented part being u'derva. This is eerily the first word many children speak, and thus mankind has decided that it is of demonic nature/possession.

Any connections between the Conception spell and Erad the Illspoken's seemingly endless knowledge of the past are not discussed in Tycho major, on pain of Bequittal.

Bequittal:
A forced withdrawal from work, civilization, and society into a hermitage lasting a fixed period, usually for seven years. Similar to, but not the same as, excommunication or exile. An arcane and ancient practice, usually actually seen only in very religious communities. See The Bequittal of San Josephi.

Mastula, King of the Shadows:
A complex and multi-faceted Apex, demi-god or dervan (demon), assigned many different (often conflicting) properties and characteristics by different cultures and religions throughout history. His nomenclature, too, is ever changing. The oldest Alytran society knew him as Maar Tur, whereas Kornriken texts had his name as Lamastu. It wasn't until the fourth century D.C. (Decca Capsulae) when the writings of Minthet Haria transformed the image of Mastula into a purely demonic figure.

The view of Garilan Veocel, the planar scholar of the Laensraad (the Academy of Shadows, the world's most powerful and mysterious order of wizards), is entirely different. In his 871 D.C. tract "From Shadows, Light" he calls Mastula's dervanization an entirely typical example of moralistic oversimplification on the part of Minthet Haria, and claims that the understanding of the Plane of the Abyss as "only" a hell is likewise short-sighted and ignorant. Of course, most of the citizens of Tycho major have never heard of the Laensraad, and those who have consider them derva cultists.

Mastula is certainly as trickster god, often seen as capricious and mischievous, sometimes mischievous, such as in the folk tale where he guided his strong but dull older brother Karwak , the Apex of war, into a dark cave with no light, and there convinced him he was blind. Other such tales depict him consistently as a coward, shape-shifter, thief, cheater, and sometimes murderer. At the same time, he is the red-headed step-child of the gods, and a figure of pity due to his lack of raw strength, forcing him to rely on his incredible cunning.

In short, Mastula is a figure wreathed entirely in mystery and misinformation, which is suitable considering that he is associated with (alternatingly known as father to, cousin of, or the same being as) the Apex Rumor.

(It seems that Max has ironed out (steamrolled over) my Crazenote about Apex! Heh.)

Apex
A term used for the "less beautiful" demi-gods, interchangable with dervan. These demons are the opposite of the Lith. They are all siblings, but it is undecided who their celestial parents are.

They are created using a Twisanti version of the Conception spell.

List of known Apex/Dervan:
Matsula
Rumor (often confused with the above)
Karwak
Recilla
Quernalis
Xeitas (not to be confused with the country)

It is possible that the D'Avola family, despite their mortality, is related to the Apex.

(Crazenote: there are plenty of little doodads added in the wiki that are not in this topic--namely books, quotes, minor people. I'm sure that Blitzen would not mind their addition! Another note:

Please do not make a new topic and then "justify" it. This goes against the rules for one, and for two it MAKES MY LIVE MISERABLE. I included topics like this in the wiki but it is a PAIN. If you wish to add something that hasn't been mentioned, then define it while building off another topic. Example: you want to talk about a monk that resides in Altyaborgen. Make the topic about the aforementioned monestary, then expand with a new topic about the dude. THANK YOU.

Third note: if you wish to add to a previous topic, please state that before writing the addition. This will make future updates that much easier. Remember that it is an addition, also; actual changes to the Tycho world must go through Blitzen.)

Phlegmatic Pond

Also known as the final floor of the Cavern of Dreams, this mythical place is rumored to hold the mighty beast Halprog and hold the Gate. The pond s roughly believed to be as big as a large lake. The pond however is frozen with only a hole big enough for a human to squeeze through. Other than the Halprog, the viscous Chimera Fish and other creatures live in the pond as well. The water however is cursed, it causes whoever steps into it who does not call it as home to go into a drunken trance of happiness and laughing. Heroes are have rumored to drown this way due to the cursed water, this is noted to be one of the ways the creatures eat. Also in combination to that if you are able to resist, the waters over time turn you into a creature yourself by a sickness known as Goddess Tear Syndrome. But if one is able to avoid the creatures and is able to resists the sicknesses as well as the curses the Gate is said to lie on the very bottom of the pond.
Hottentot Gallery on Scaffolder's Street
The Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street is an art gallery on Miner's Street in the city of Veriag. It is commonly called "the hogoss". Currently it is run by Adam Hottentottson who took it over after his father Urban O'Hottentott. The gallery has been in the possession of the Hottentott family for a long time although not since it's creation.

The gallery was originally founded by an artist whose name is long lost and was located on Scaffolder's Street. In a strange turn of events the Hottentotts aquired the gallery and moved it from its previous location. They also changed the name of the gallery to the Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street. It has been noted by many passer-bys and random people that the name makes no sense since it actually comes from a time after it moved from Scaffolder's Street. Others think it is brilliant irony and suitable for the strangeness that goes on at the gallery.

Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street is the main financial backer of the newssheet Veriag Chronicles. Something that originally caused a lot of controversy amongst buyers and sellers of art and other high-class members of Veriag Upper Class society. Shortly after the announcement the so called Noble's Shuffle happened which changed the map of the lower aristocrachy in Veriag.

For actual content the gallery specializes in the weird and wonderful. Though the also have more regular works. Their most famous artist is probably Hugo the Horrible who is known for his life-like paintings like Slaughter at the Pine Hills and Phallus' Last Battle.

Currently the inhouse artist is Krigiz Uzanbot who has claimed that he likes to paint pictures of furniture in sensual positions and with his collections have found quite a following in certain circles around Veriag.
In response to Craze's notes, what I see in this topic is two distinctly divergent narratives. One surrounds the mythology and is the result of the initial post of Chaos and another is about the physical and political world of Tycho and branches from the post I made.

Although I disdain from talking about things like demons and magic and metaphysical geography, (and also from the fact that the post that started them broke the rules and much of the transigence from the original purpose of the topic has branched off of it), I might reccomend that the Encycatlas have two volumes: one for the World proper and one for the other stuff, but I'll need to consider what should and shouldn't be counted as Tycho canon (lol), and if another volume is nescessary.

Craze, I'll be on IRC tonight after 9PM Eastern if you want to talk about the Encycatlas.

I'll update the topic header with OP notes about the Encycatlas.
I was wondering about that... not too many opportunities presented themselves to really delve into the actual placement of countries and politics within the world of Tycho.

I was hoping for more of that and less of the Mythology myself. (also, you may want to recap that each article's NAME has to be taken from one of the italics in the previous article... that hasn't sunk in with some people yet, it seems)

Yeah, I tried to subtly encourage more physical locations in the Crazenotes (ie THIS AREA IS NEAR VERIAG HINT HINT). I'll be in IRC tonight.
I don't want anyone to take this too seriously (internets after all lol), but right now I am thinking about cutting out all the mythological stuff that doesn't follow the rules and requesting re-writes and retcons. Dunno what form this will take or what will be selected, I haven't made up my mind, but I'm looking into it.

UPDATE:WE HAVE DECIDED TO RETCON SOME THINGS

Please consult the rules before adding further to the Encycatlas. I would like a focus less on mythology and theogony and more on the actual, physical and political world of Tycho for now. It seems that we're two pages in and the main topic of conversation is occultists texts, when really we only have two major polities. Lets attempt to be a little more scientistic about Tycho. This is a world-building topic and we are writing the Encycatlas (whatever it is, it sounds important), so keep that in mind please. Shinan's entries are great examples of what we need more of.

Most of the changes that are going to be made, are mostly just identifying what is mythologial and what isn't. I've got a beef with some of the things that just don't make sense arising from the attempt to incorperate the mythological stuff into the historical stuff, so I encourage people to stay away from it mostly, unless they can relate it directly to the history, geography, or people in Tycho.

Its fun doing things like this and I really want people to be able to participate on thier own terms but they should also be able to stay on focus, and that focus is worldbuilding. Inherent in this is the idea that a world is a series of systems that logically complement each other. If mythology and mysticism are allowed free-reign, things will not have to make sense when they can be justified with the power of a demi-god or a mist that makes empires disappear, which isn't what we're trying to do.

On that note, please keep adding things to the Encycatlas, because its fun to read the things that people come up with and branching off of each other.

Click here to see the first post with the rules.

I've taken the liberty to completely re-write the previous article on the Old Empire, originally by ChaosProductions, because the his didn't make sense in the context of the articles that came before it.

The Old Empire

The Old Empire otherwise known as the Rocci Empire, was a multi-continental empire that existed from before recorded history until about 350 years before D.C. It power exctended over most of Tycho from the city of Rocci, which is situated in the current Kingdom of Rochemont.
  • The Rise of the Old Empire
It is unknown how long the Rocci had authority over the other lands of Tycho before writing became popular around 700 years before D.C. By that time, the power and extent of Rocci influence had penetrated and encompassed the eastern lands completely. Formerly distinctive tribes interbred with Rocci imperial settlers, and the armies of each nation laid down its arms to the authority of the emperor.
Around 600 years before D.C., we now know that the Rocci had spread thier empire overseas to the western lands. Proto-imperial natives of the west included the Fobbads, now dreogratorily referred to as "pigmen" for thier rustic ways, and the Vach, whose zealous animosity to the empire resulted in intermittant wars throught the years of imperial colonization.
  • The Imperial Order
Local kings would pay allegiance to the emperor, who inturn ensured that peace and prosperity continued within the empire. Local government continued under the present monarchy or aristocracy, but the empire kept a monopoly on economic laws and military force, to ensure peace within and between kingdoms. Kings were allowed the personal ear of the Emperor Tykran. The Holy Crown was the ultimate authority, and some say that the crown itself has somewhat magical properties in its ability to keep the Emperor Tyrkan alive for what seems like an eternity before his death and the subequent collapse of the empire. Some historians, however, believe that it was multiple men assuming the same role over the years that led to the rumor of the crown's ability to grant immortality.
  • The Fall of the Old Empire
From what is left behind, it is thought that the Emperor Tykran died in 500 Y.B.D.C., and the Empire was thrown into chaos without his mediating influence. At this point the empire began to receed from its furthest settlements. By 400 Y.B.D.C., the Rocci had completely abandoned their western settlements, pulling out thier forces to fortify the situation back in the East. Those left behind were mostly Rocci-Embrian peoples, who would go on to become the Altyrians, developing a distinct culture separated from the Old Empire.
Bureaucracies, trade, and peace began to break down. Widespread social, political, and economic collapse coupled with epidemics of horrible diseases resulted in massive decreases in population. The former provinces of the empire recessed into near-barbarism, and for a breif time the art of writing was lost. The infastructure of the empire completley collapsed in fire and neglect, and for nearly three hundred years life carried on mostly outside its old influence. All knowledge of the western world would be effectively forgotten until the Grand Rediscovery. The city of Rocci in Rochemont was the last vestage of the old empire, until all the ethnic Rocci in Rochemont died out in the epidemic known as the Righteous Plage of 50 Y.B.D.C.

It was only until around 100 Y.B.D.C. that the former kingdoms of the old world began to coalesce again, centralize, and begin to vie once again for the Holy Crown of the Old Empire, now kept safely hidden away from grasp within the Tower of Rochemont.

The Grand Rediscovery

The Grand Rediscovery (Disocovri Contintali) is the native given to the reclamation of the lost provinces of the Old Empire by the Kingdom of Embria. It was a pivotal moment in the history of Tycho, and now functions as the ideological basis for the Embrian case as the rightful claimants of the Holy Crown of the Old Empire, counting themselves as the spiritual successors of the Rocci and destined to rule with the same authority over all of Tycho. While other nations dismiss the Grand Rediscovery as a significant event, namely because its effects only encompass a small geo-political area of Tycho, it now one of the of key components of Embrian acclaimism.
In the year 3 D.C., Maximillian Barilla, an Embrian scholar, discovered hidden within the depths of Castle Rychas an ancient manuscript while searching for his lost cat. Upon translation, it held within it navigational directions to lands only thought to have existed in folklore, the Lost Provinces of the Old Empire. After mapping out the literary star-charts, he realized they must be across the ocean to the west. He took his findings to King Larivee, who immediately endorsed the notion of an expedition.
Larivee's motives were not purely adventuristic, for he knew that in reclaiming the lost provinces of the Old Empire that would strengthen his claim to the Holy Crown, a power that would give him the greatest authority in all of Tycho.
Over the next two years, the country was abuzz with rumours. The king, careful not to alert other nations to his designs, financed the expedition from the royal treasury. He put at its head Lars Allox, a first-class sailor and middle-ranking citizen-soldier.
In the year of Disocovri Contintali, Lars Allox, armed with the directions from Barilla and a crew of thirty, set sail from Castle Stormont and headed westward into the ocean. After a week and a half at sea, he shored at the place where a city would later bear his name. Within weeks, the young captain had met the chieftain of the Altyrian tribes.
The Altyrians, on the brink of destruction from continuing Vach oppression, pledged fealty to the King of Embria in exchange for colonial cooperation, protection, and political integration into the kingdom. The King drew charters and established the Embrian Colonial Corperation, Embrian Colonial Army, and a great campaign took place to encourage migration to the new, sparsely populated lands. Embrians and Altyrians were receptive to each other and often intermarried. It was not a hard gap to bridge because Altyrians and Embrians are of the same geoethinic stock. The Altyrians would enjoy the same political freedoms as Embrians, and the cheiftain of the Altyrians, a position now embodied in the role of the Altyrian Regent-General (currently Marshall Verho), would have the personal ear of the King.
With Embrian firepower and Altyrian battle experience the two nations pushed back the Vach and built colonies and cities across Altyra, The Brehaig and into Xeitas. When the borders with the Vach tribes stabilized, the provinces of Altyra, Behaig, and Xeitas became permanent provinces of the Embrian kingdom, with representation in the King's Honourhall. The successful reunion of the Altyrians is one of the prime reasons for the Embrian claim to the Holy Crown of the Old Empire.
It is thought that Lariat's War was an attempt by the Vach to destroy the Embrian presence in the west and the Altyrians along with it, refuting the Embrian claim to the crown, much to service of the Vach allies and Embrian geo-political rivals, the Kingdom of Agarr.
The current Embrian calendar uses the Grand Rediscovery as the anchor for thier yearly count, which is currently in its 450th year.

Kornrike

300s YDBC-?YDBC

Early Years

Coming from the ancient Kasha Tribe who where traveling nomads, Kornrike was born under his parents in 500s of YDBC. His exact date of birth is unknown, Kornrike was of said to been a shepherd working the fields and tending to lambs. It was said he had a special connection to the animals which had allowed him to work as a shepherd. It was said at the age of 9 his father brought him to the Melencia Temple to receive his blessing and become a man. At that time Embrian colonists would later capture them and force them to live in Veriag. Five years after that Kornrike's father died of a disease known as Lynock that had plagued the tribe. It was said that Kornrike mourning his father went up to an unknown mountain to pray. For five days he prayed non-stop until it was said he saw the face of the Creator. Coming down from the mountain with his staff, he gathered the entire tribe under him and delivered a speech to rally his people where he took them to the legendary Cavern of Dreams. There at the entrance, he prayed for his people for five more days and when they returned they where suddenly cured and immune to Lynock. The people cheered him and bestowed upon him Prophet of the Heavens a title that had not been bestowed upon someone in over a three centuries.

The Vach Confederacy

Kornrike soon became a well educated man at the age of 35 he left his tribe and began life under the Kingdom of Embria. There it was said he saw the evils of the world and became ill because of it. Three weeks he was sick until a brave young man approached him Serez Lariat a mere young man at the time approached him and spoke to Kornrike, there he told Kornrike of his dreams and ambitions to unify the land and bring about a peace for eternity. This moved Kornrike and it was right then when he was able to leave his bed. He prayed for three nights straight until he was struck with a "vision from the Creator". He would have to leave the Kingdom of Embria and begin anew somewhere else. Quickly before he could be killed by the King's men, him and Serez escaped from the Kingdom of Embria and soon found themselves in the Kasha Desert where his tribe had lived many years before. There along with his followers who where remnants of the empire, he had discovered the Vach tribes who had attempted to rally against the Embrian Empire, there Kornrike convinced them and rallied them and Kasha Tribe to serve under Sezer as the new way of peace. There under his leadership they would erect a new capital, Ferien.

Lariat's War

Kornrike was appointed as strategist of the army, to the leader Serez. There Kornrike staged attacks that would later take small territories. Then by his great leadership skills was able to start rebel groups all over the Kingdom of Embria. There he was able to take territories secretly behind enemy lines. It was only at the Battle of Brangsworn that he was met with the brute force of the empire's general Pallas March. It was then he went into solitude by the request of Sezer Lariat to come up with a new plan. After almost a month of praying and fasting, Kornrike returned to the main base. This time with a new plan, it was then he had his spellcasters use illusions into to making the army of the Vach Condederacy more terrifying. There he was able to take towns and villages without even losing a solider. He was stood by opposition by General Pallas March at the Battle of the Brehaig. There he was able to push back the forces of the General and come to a stalemate. There General Pallas March finally called for a armistice. It was there Kornrike had officially claimed Pallas March to be one of the greatest warriors throughout the land, impressed with his devotions he convinced Sezer Lariat to cease fighting. Kornrike had seen that they had crippled the evils of the land and that as long as a few good men were in the land, that there deeds would not go in vain.

Kornrike's Acension

It was said due to Kornrike they had come as far as they had. It was said due to Kornrike that a couple of years later, rebellion would cripple the Kingdom long enough for the Vach Confederacy to uphold a foothold of power and finally bring about a new age. When Kornrike had reached the age of 98 it is told in legends before his old friend Sezer Lariat that God's hand came down from the sky and returned him to the heavens. It was said even his enemies wept and Sezer proclaimed him to be the greatest mind of the heavens and a true prophet of God. It is unknown whether the story of Kornrike is entirely accurate, but the Vach Confederacy now standing today still, is proof that a great mind was here that led them to victory.
Nick, I really like your article but there are some continuity errors that we should fix before we go any further.

Firstly, I suppose it should be assumed that the Vach tribes united into the Vach Confederacy as a result of thier defeat at the hands of the Embrian/Altyrian forces after the Grand Rediscovery. This being so, Lariat's War would have been against the Kingdom of Embria, and part of the impetus of this war was to defeat thier claim to Tykran's Crown of the Old Empire. ( I guess this interpretation makes King Tykran now Emperor Tykran of the Old Empire.) The Lariat's War srticle states the cause of the war had something to do with the Holy Crown of the Old Empire. The Vach themselves would not have had a claim to the crown because they were never a part of the Old Empire, but perhaps an alliance with another power that did could be part of thier motive? (We'll probably have to expand upon or re-write the article on Lariat's War.)

The Vach were temporarily fighting against the Old Empire, but that was around a thousand years before the Vach Confederacy, Lariat's War, or Pallas March.

A good way to retcon your article would be to adjust it so that
1) Lariat's War took place 435 to 441 D.C. Change the Old Empire to the Kingdom of Embria. The Old Empire is long gone. Kornrike could start rebel groups within or around what USED to be the Old Empire, but is now colonial provinces of the Kingdom of Embria.
2) Because of the time confusion, you might want to have Kornrike be a Vach who went to live in Veriag (which is in the Embrian colonial provinces, same place as to what was once the Old Empire)
3) Because of the date of inception of the Vach Confederacy, which was formed sometime before Lariat's War, and one can assume its formation as a partial result of the loss at the hands of the Embrian/Altyrians, (in the days of the Old Empire the Vach may just have been a collection of tribes) this should play a role. Kornrike/Setzer can have that role as the uniter of the Vach tribes.
4) We could use this article as the oppourtunity to make Ferien the capital of the Vach Confederacy (or an area beyond or beside the Vach Confederacy)and the end of the Great Market Road.
5) If Kornrike died at 98 after Lariat's War ended in 441, and the present day is 450, you should be able to place his birthdate between 339 and 347.

Hmm, the history is starting to get confusing... I think I understand how it all goes though.
