YUME NIKKI JUST RELEASED ON STEAM, ALONG WITH A COUNTDOWN
Posts
I don't make it a habit of trusting game companies at all, but I also don't make it a habit to distrust them. I think you're looking a little too hard for manipulative speech. The fact that the scrapped ideas for the original are being put into this, on it's own, signifies some sort of involvement from Kikiyama.
I don't particularly think the game will be great, but I don't think it'll be bad either. I'm neutral at the moment, and I'm not taking any sides unless I have good reason to.

Oldest trick in the book.
Regardless of involvement I'm not really impressed by the result. Seems like what'd you expect from a half-effort of recreating YN in 3D. Also the whole vibe of doing a generic countdown and "franchise expansion" just doesn't sit well with me. It's CaveStory 3DS / Cavestory+ all over again where the game looked and played better as a humble solo project and that even had Pixel completely involved (Thank god CS+ gives you visual/music options).

it just a 3D remake wasnt it
We won't really know until the game's released. My impression is that it's sort of part remake, part fanfic, a la the novel and manga.

It's out now, and from reviews, it looks like it's a halfassed puzzle platformer horror game.
Just watched some more footage that had extra spooky things that the steam trailer didn't feature, & I still think it looks interesting.
It doesn't seem bad, per se, however it doesn't seem to be particularly good either... Not something that should have the Yume Nikki tittle slapped on it.
I'm not sure who had the bright idea to turn a game known for aimless open exploration into a linear side scroller, but, yeah...

apparently content that never made it into the original game will be added to this one
Unused charactersets? Uboa's brother? Another floating block meant to make you think the game is more than just an exercise in wandering through empty areas? The game was a full wardrobe with nothing to get dressed for. This is why I'm still not a fan of this "masterpiece".
It is unlike any other RPG especially in the fact that there really is no action or dialogue to speak of.No gameplay/story to speak of. It's unlike any other RPG by the very nature that it's not a game, nor is there a role to play. A role is granted by a force. There is no force in this world than what the player seeks out, therefore there is no inherent role. If you don't project your own sense of wonder onto this world, you will find no purpose, no role to serve.
This gives the game a very dark and foreboding atmosphere.Maybe if the player projects that onto the world. I didn't and found nothing. I expect the world to tell me what it is or at least start handing me the pieces to finding out what it is. If you advertise the game in this way (that having a bunch of nothing makes something), you've already failed at introducing new faces to your product. There needs to be something (anything, and it must be consistent) for there to be an "atmosphere".
Can you make it to the secret ending? There's more than just that. one. ending? I'd love for someone to reveal this "secret" ending to me, because the one that's given is just a slap in the face for how much trouble the player has to subject themselves to in order to reach it.

The problem I'm finding with this statement is that you're judging how proper it is to call this a thing based on something that had very little of such a "thing" in the first place. Theoretically, one could say that Mega Man 2 shouldn't be called a Mega Man because it introduces Energy Tanks and that puts the difficulty of the game largely on the player. It turns survival in a threatening world into stopping for lunch when you get hungry. You're in no real danger and that really can ruin the game if that's what you're looking for.
They added more to what the original game had and suddenly this makes it improper to call it what it is? Whether you like it or not, intent rules the day. It had the graces of the original author (apparently), so even if they took a good thing and made it bad, you can't just throw out this one sour spot for the sake of preserving the "integrity" of the original product. You can't just ignore the entire Gungan species because Jar Jar was an idiot, or throw Star Wars Episode 1 under the bus because he played a pretty big fucking role in it (no matter how disappointing it was).
I watched manly play it. It's basically a 3D remake, alot more linear, watered down from the original because 3D is EXPENSIVE, and instead of collecting effects you can collect hidden sparklies that turn out to be concept art. The game is largely but not entirely a platforming sidescroller, parts of it are top-down exploration like an adventure rpg. There are cutscenes. I think this game is alot more cinematic and less about freeform exploration.

I'm not sure I ever said anything about integrity. They turned a game that sold it'self on open exploration into a linear game where you can't explore, and that's my biggest problem. It feels sort of like someone turned Mario into an FPS, to me.

They didn't add more to what the original game had. They had less. The majority of areas are missing, and the game only has 4 of the original 24 effects.

No, intent really doesn't rule the day. That's just... Fucking stupid. I'd make a Hitler analogy or something, but you probably don't need it to realize why that statement is nonsensical.

That's pretty arrogant. If you don't like the game, that's cool, but saying it's "very little of such a thing" is just cynical. Take all the assets in a bucket and maybe you can judge how much of a "thing" it is by how much is there. However, judging how much of a "thing" something is by means of how the player can interact with the assets is when it becomes subjective. Maybe you don't like wandering around aimlessly, looking at stuff, and that's perfectly understandable. But phrasing it as if everyone who does find it interesting is somehow wrong for doing so, isn't.

Corfaisus has gone on record as not understanding why people like YN so let that influence your decision whether or not you continue this conversation.
