M.O.G. 2?

For you old timers who were around in 2014, you might remember I ran an ambitious resource creation + game making event called My Own Game (aka M.O.G.)

The intent was to get people out of their comfort zones and attempt the different aspects of game creation, like sprite work or composing or sound effects. The M.O.G. initiative turned into a 3-part event, with each event focusing on a different aspect - soundtrack, graphics, and game creation. The soundtrack and graphics event ran in parallel. The final event happened afterwards and focused on game creation, wherein we created a game but only using resources created in the previous two events (+ general public resources, like RTP, to fill gaps)!

I also had a spitballing topic about it (if you are bored one day and want to read it):

I've been toying with the idea of doing another one for 2~3 years now - I felt that the first MOG was a lot of fun and some neat stuff came out of it.

Would you be down for a similar event?

Now, the format doesn't have be exactly the same (though it can be!).

Some format ideas I've considered:
  • Same as before, with 2 events run parallel (Graphics and Music) followed by a Game Creation event using resources from the first two
  • I was considering flipping the order - START the event with a non-graphic/RTP prototype game, then part 2 would be REQUEST RESOURCES... probably wouldn't work out, but worth thinking about
  • Focus on a very specific aspect of an RPG and build resources for it - such as Battles. So have a resource creation event centered around stuff you'd need for battles - enemies, animations, battle music theme, skill sound effects, scripts (?) etc, and then follow it up with a Make an Interesting Battle System event, using those resources. I just used Battles as an example, but we could consider other areas like dungeons or towns.
  • Try to generate a cohesive RMN RTP (wow what an undertaking that would be!)
  • A long series of small events, each one focusing on a different particular resource, with fan voting. May or may not eventually culminate with a game creation event

...or maybe you have some ideas! Thoughts? Interest?

i like the rmnrtp as well, and i can definitely help by being bossy and forcing guidelines down everyone's throats WELP

no but really, it'd be fun
we could even have multiple templates / guidelines / samples people could pick and submit to, i feel a flat color / pastel with minimalistic textures would yield the most submissions alTHOUgh i'm obviously on the interest of making texturey late snes-y stuff

So, I can call myself an old timer now?

Rmn RTP sounds like an impossible feat or a feat, which would only allow some people to work on graphics and music.
I guess I would leave the first part pretty close to the original with achievements as guidelines.
The second part could be more directed. Last time most paricipants got creatively exhausted during the first part.
Maybe do something like choose an "rmn RTP" after the first part and make a chain game with it.
The rtp idea sounds like the most fun but also the highest risk to fail.
Maybe we could form teams like in the rmnlympics based on which rtp idea we like best e.g. fantasy, modern, futuristic.

Thought part of me feels scripting should be included somewhere in the contest, even if it's people who participated in the first stages requesting help to write a script for their game made in the final stage. You could split the people by scripting ability in this stage with those of us who are already proficient helping those who aren't.

B.Q.7?
The only resource I could possibly contribute is music and my ability to do that is hilariously rudimentary but if this happens you can still probably count me in.

The idea of an RMNTP is delicious.

good point. MOG2 is too ambitious for me. I should cancel it now before it starts.
I love this. Said it before. Just YES.

I actually think this would be really cool, cause it gives a nice inspiration start of what to make resource wise without it needing to be for your own game.

I just pray it starts at a time where I can dedicate hours upon hours to it lol.

Also, would it be possible to team up for this? I think making small design groups would be really interesting and up the art game. (or music game, or whatever) For more intense cohesive feedbacking n motivating : D
(OFC running solo should always be cool)
Well we'll see if I run anything on this or not. Maybe some of our more ambitious and driven members can start something up (and then I can pin it and support it instead)? So far though, the reception to MOG2 seems tepid.

I like the last two ideas...and turtles. You could combine the two. It would act as more of a guide to create a cohesive RTP: run events one asset type at a time. Or would that be a bit too much of a full monty version of the Summoner of Sounds event (that I dearly miss)? I did want to run an SOS type of event that was graphics focused called Pictures at an Exhibition that would have actually followed the format I just suggested but Liberty shot it down.

It was to be run like SOS but it was going to be graphics based. Just as SOS was a musical event with a visual theme, Pictures at an Exhibition was going to be a graphics event with a musical theme (spefically Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition). The idea being that the participants were going through an art exhibition, except they would be creating the exhibition. Each theme would focus on a specific type of graphic. For example Dance of the Chicks would focus on NPC charset creation to fit with music's theme of children playing in a stage play (which is what that song was about, a picture of children dressed as chickadees at a school play). Once everyone reached Baba Yaga, that theme would focus on enemy battlers and so on. Of course I had been inspired by SOS so the point was to make a long term companion event in rhe same vein.
I think having it as a chain event makes it more daunting than it needs to be. It'd be nice if there could be a separate one where you use someone else's resources, but that would be fun by itself already.

And so would be creating resources. hehe.

Summoner of Souls did feel really fun, but wasn't it like really long too?

I think the format can be tweaked too. It could be around themes and areas, yknow, even if it would be like mountains or sth. But I would like graphic event thingies! Dust off my pyxel and see if i can make something happen with dedication and love, and hope my mind stays in non-pixelated form.

It'd be a bummer if noone wanted to participate in that tho. *ponders*
A big issue with SoS was how long it ran. Over a year! Crazy.
I feel like big resource events like SoS and possibly one featuring graphical works has a bit of an underlying problem that nobody really likes to talk about, true as I think it may be.

Think about a large collaboration of assets - specifically music and graphics. Now I could be wrong, but I think the biggest reason a lot of people shy away from using staple generic assets like RTP is because of how COMMONPLACE they can be. It seems as if most devs want unique assets that won't act like an overused bag spanning a large number of games. Also, I feel like the event itself will be viewed as a sort of 'exclusive thing' that they may feel taboo to use the resources from, not dissimilar to another devs project. Then again, this is mostly the aftermath of big asset creation events, a lot of what I'm more worried about is on the asset creators side.

Everyone loves artists and musicians that can crank out professional assets for a game. So much so that devs without talent are willing to pay for their services. Now I know that asset creators are just as diverse as devs are, but I'd be willing to wager that they tend to have a very full plate of to-do's most of the time, never mind the fact that they too have their own projects that they would like to work on. I feel like that's probably hard enough to balance between commissions, personal projects, and team projects. I know I for one don't seem to get a lot of reactions in discord when I poke artists for their talent availability.

Of course I could be totally wrong and all of our artists/musicians are bored off their cans and need an event like SoS to keep them sane.
I feel honestly events like this are more a chance or fun thing to do for those who are KINDA dabbling into the artsy, but not fully committed to it. (or if they were, more as a detour thing?). Kinda like how the Kids Design monsters made everyone jump on board for the fun of it.

That is tricky tho and makes it much less enticing for those who are already working their butt off and have enough better n actually paid projects. True.
That's kind of what MOG was gearing for originally - to get out of our comfort zones and trying to compose a song or spriting a background. People like me who never created custom resources, who at most did sloppy edits to existing works.

If I were to run MOG2 I will likely revert to that form and aim. Novices amateuring it up like a bunch of amateurs.

An RMNRTP is an ambitious undertaking that I am not qualified to run, but would support if someone decided to attempt it. Not unlike SoS. Or the RMN Music Pack.

The thing about SOS was that each part was supposed to be a month long, but then for half of them, Happy would end up extending theme and then taking as much as three months at one point to get us the next theme and that extended the event way longer than it should have gone. For this idea, I think a month per theme is much longer than it needs to be. A week or two would be just fine and I doubt Kentona would be constantly abandoning the event.
