Scour fairy tales for something interesting? You are severely underestimating the cool things you can do with fairy tales. Take Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales for instance. A charming and fun game existing entirely out of fairy tale minigames.
It's a much better idea than the umpteenth revive the dead event anyway.

Sure? As long as it's recognisable as the fairy tale in question. Like, say you end up with a sci-fi game about a girl who marries a guy who has a beard and her stalker almost kills him but she ends up giving him CPR and they live happily ever after... Just because I based the idea on a specific fairy tale doesn't mean it's immediately apparent what that fairy tale is and as such, isn't really recognisable. You might as well just be writing your own game without any inspirations at that point. So yeah, recognisable.
You don't have to say that the story is based on The Princess and the Pea but it probably shouldn't just be about an insomniac lesbian whose parents keep trying to marry her off to guys... and that's it. XDD

So recognizable in the story synopsis/gamepage? Or as you play the game? I'm toying about the idea being super obvious half way through but I do like the idea of contemporary setting, characters slightly renamed (but thematically the same) and as the plot points add up it's pretty obvious what it is.
