[RMVX ACE] COMPRESSION MY ETERNAL NEMESIS

Anyone know of any alternatives to the built-in encryption?

My game is throwing a bitch-fit when I compress it into an encrypted archive, unzip that archive, and play it...specifically it's throwing a RGSS error on line 106 or 107 in the 'Cache' script. "Failed to create bitmap"

God Damnit. I am pretty sure this is the encryption at work. Apparently, I learned, by finding an artifact of myself, I have tangled with this issue in the path. The reason mine threw an error on line 107 and everyone else's I googled threw an error on line 106 is that line 106 of 'Cache' was now a commented out string of expletives. I must have been quite frustrated when attempting to troubleshoot this in the past. I vaguely remember being forced to release the game open.

Is there any way to have the console open while playing (not test-playing) your game? I pasted in a scriptlet that allegedly did this but nothing happened. Very likely I put it the wrong place.

While I know that the built-in encryption is widely considered to be a joke, that's not why I want to know about alternatives to it. Rather, it's because I need to at the very minimum have the appearance of protecting my intellectual property, not to mention custom I art I paid actual money for and genuinely want to protect. And I want to get my shit out the door ASAP. But I really can't do it open this time. I don't care how shitty the encryption was, I just wanted the compression process not to break my shit!

I have a hunch it's something in the encryption that's mucking things up and also a vague hunch that it's CSCA Light Effects specifically that's making the failed to create bitmap error pop up. But I'm not sure about either thing so I'll keep debugging. In the meantime NEED DISTRIBUTION MEDIUM PLEASE HELP

edit: yeah it's definitely the encryption, an unencrypted package is working fine.
wow is this place dead or is this place dead

Anyway as is so often the case within 24 hours of turning to the community to plead for help (prematurely) I figured it out myself. Don't leave .pdn files in the Graphics folder kids. It confuses the encryption somethin' fierce.

I would have answered, but I didn't know the answer.

I don't even know what a .pdn is. This is good to know, though! Thank you!

I wish I still remembered the name of a certain encrypter that basically grabbed your entire game folder and made it a single exe that when executed, executed the encrypted rpgvxace game exe using the game files you dumped into it.

The problem it had though is that every encrypted exe it produced would set most antiviruses off. The file was safe but it was still getting constantly flagged as a virus, so it kind of makes it pointless at the long run because people won't want to play the game.

I'm rambling even though I can't remember the name of the software. I'll stop now.
I've had this happen.

Check your graphics files. You may have two different file formats for the same asset and one of them is unreadable to VX Ace.

For example, if you have Character1.png and Character1.ase (a file format that can be only read by a specific program. In this case: Aseprite), RPG Maker will prioritize the ase file and try to load that one instead of readable png, causing the error.

It's very bizarre in that VXA will ONLY do this when the game is encrypted. Which is why you never encountered it in playtesting.

I guess you answered your own question, nvm

You can't draw this conclusion after only a few hours of no replies in a help topic. All you can say is that the average amount of people(compared to other topics) that read this topic didn't know the answer. Compression errors are not exactly common knowledge.

But yeah, the forums are pretty much dead.
To be fair I did wait 21 hours before making that comment.

But yeah, I do wish these forums were a lot less dead. I prefer posting here to trying to make my presence known posting at the more active sites.

For anyone who was curious, .pdn is the file format that Paint Dot Net saves to with layers. I use it instead of photoshop because I am poor. I also use GIMP, but only for more in-depth editting work. If it's simple or moderate complexity, I prefer to use paint.net, as I like the interface more and I find GIMP's interface a little overwhelming: generally I only crack open GIMP when I absolutely need a grid. I left the .pdn versions of some .pngs in my Graphics/Characters folder and the encryption algorithm clearly had no idea wtf to do with them which is understandable. I scooped them out and moved them to a folder outside the game project called "art assets" in case I need to go back to those assets and mess with the layers again.
