VIDEO GAME CRITIC WAGER 2020

Posts

I decided to go with Half Life: Alyx for my next pick, because VR peripheral based gaming is always a gamble - But then again, Resident Evil 7 did pretty good back then sales wise, even though it was a hot mess.

Alrighty, did my second pick. There was an indie game I watched to snatch because I'm invested in its predecessor, but I went safe-ish and grabbed Nioh 2.
I think the remakes are interesting. FF7 could be underwhelming cause of Midgar only, but then again it's the best part of the game, so why not dedicate an entire game to it? RE:3 hinges on whether or not Mr. X / Nemesis can serve an entire game... or if people are tired of RE2 again.

I'm going with a nintendo barrage. AC looks like it'll come out for sure, no idea about BOTW2 but it's a good pick considering 1 was game of the decade material.
I'm apparently only picking RPGs because RPG critics are notorious for giving high scores to the games they review... Or not...

SHINAN YOU DICK YOU STOLE WASTELAND 3 FROM ME! D:

Okay, I'm picking that new Yakuza game now. Jerk. XD
...I was gonna go with the 2020 remake of Trials of Mana, but after seeing the Secret of Mana remake and a trailer for Trials of Mana... I decided to go with Streets of Rage 4 by Dotemu instead.

DotEmu's 2D animated remake of WonderBoy: The Dragon's Trap (2017) fared reasonably well with critics, not a great game, but maybe Streets of Rage 4 will do the same? ...I dunno, 2D brawlers, like action rpgs, are kind of a dicey genre in this age, lol.

I'm going to bet strong for Ori and Tales of Arise for my third and fourth pick.
My title list got really narrowed down when I saw everyone else's picks, but I could still pull it off.

The counterpicks look like its going to be tricky.
I'm gonna go with Oddworld: Soulstorm as my fourth. Lorne Lanning has a strong PC game following and despite some incredible minor, arguable, "hypocrisy" (something about ads being shown by the game developer, in a game that's about anti-consumerism and environmentalism.) the remake, OddWorld: New & Tasty, was very well received by critics! Holy poop!

I never had a chance to finish the first two games on Playstation, I never liked how you needed to get 100% to get the good ending. But the talking mechanic was revolution at the time and I always wondered what this series would have looked like 20 years from now - and here we are and OddWorld is still getting a very strong reception from players, very cool stuff. I'm gonna take a gamble and say this remake of Exodus is gonna do just as well as "New & Tasty" did, back in 2015.

The funniest thing is that New and Tasty was helmed by the guy who did Legion Saga lol.

edit: Didn't realize we only had 4 picks. Okay now we're at counter picks, basically it's the process where we pick the other peoples games we think we'll do poorly.

Looks like I got the benefit of going first for counterpicks.
Going to go with Oddworld for this.

WHAT?! no way! lol! that's wild!
When did this happen?!

...Alright, yeah counterpicks are gonna be hard. I guess I'll go with...Aaaa Resident Evil 3! When Resident Evil 3 originally released. Capcom had like several games coming out at once, including Dino Crisis. There's this great write up on Polygon on how Resident Evil 3 was always planned to be spinoff of sorts, in order to focus on what would eventually become Resident Evil 4, but was changed to a mainline entry at the last minute to help market it better -- I remember Resident Evil 3 quite well. The main game was an interesting and experimental short game, with the branching paths that the Nemesis encounters would create, but it also lacked what made the first 2 mainline entries so great - The real meat of the game arguably was the Mercenaries Mode, which is now being replaced with Resident Evil: Resistance.

The biggest problem facing this latest remake: How do you follow something like Resident Evil 2?(2019)
Counter picking Vampire Bloodlines 2, love the original. But the preview content was super underwhelming. I hope I'm proven wrong.

Anyway counter picks are done. You can now bid for 4 more games, and you can do this any time you want throughout the year or now even. Basically every mondayish the system will give a game who bidded the highest ( I think 0 dollars would even work if no one else bids). There's a wait and see approach to this. New game announced, release date confirmed, details reveal an existing game is probably gonna be good, all may influence your decisions to pick up a new game.

I might pick one or two more games, but other than that, we'll be waiting til March to see some results because goddamn there's almost nothing coming in January/Feb other than remasters/ports.
Godsdamn, I wanted to pick more games! I had a couple more RPGs to pick up :D

Dwarf Fortress Steam Version? Why of course.

Ohhh... We can already start making bids... Try to sneak in some games for really cheap while no one is paying attention... Wow! Time to win this?
How do the bids work and how does one know if bids are being made (other than if I decide to do bids?)

Ack, if only I knew what other games to bid on! I'll add some eventually to keep up with Kory and Darken, but need to decide what seem good...

You basically secretly auction on games that get revealed on monday. The point is you don't know who might be bidding on what you also bid on. Though I got my 2 pickups from bidding 0$ if someone decided to bid for those same games but for more than 0 then they get it instead. I'm gonna guess since there's not heavy bidding going on it's safe to go for 0 most of the time. The value is really dependent on "predicted demand".

You don't have to pick up more games right now. Though I'm probably gonna wait throughout the year as more games get announced/more details revealed about release date/hype, because yeah the games left over feel like shooting in the dark at this point.
Ah, I thought the bidding was open, to make it more of a game (and to snipe other people's bids for fun!). But it's basically just a way to pick up whatever games you might want, whenever.
Well, assuming everyone is actively doing it, it can be a game. But yeah within our group atm it's an elaborate open picker. Who knows, maybe you'll be surprised by next monday~

I'm pretty happy with picking up all those indie games. I look forward to many high scores.
