NHL 2020 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS / POOL PREDICTION THREAD ~ CORONA-CHAN EDITION ~
Posts
Round 2 picks:
(Because there's no break between rounds....)
Islanders 4-2
Lightning 4-3
Vancouver 4-3
Avs 4-1
And.... The Canucks just rolled over the no show Blues...
Vegas won't be so easy, but I have faith.
Playoff Update:
The Montreal Canadiens managed to put up a good fight against the Philadelphia Flyers but it wasn’t nearly enough, as they are defeated by Philadelphia in 6 Games. Philadelphia will now play the New York Islanders in the second round of the playoffs.
Addit, Kentona and UPRC all managed to receive 2 Points each for predicting that the Flyers would be victorious. But it was Addit and Kentona who managed to predict that the series would go six, so they both receive 4 Points instead of the usual two. Kory_Toombs also manages to pick up a Single Point for predicting that the series would also six as well.
And in a bit of a shocker, last year’s defending Stanley Cup Champions, the St. Louis Blues, were taken care of easily by the young, upstart Vancouver Canucks, as they happen to knock off the champs in 6 Games. Vancouver will now take on the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round of the playoffs.
Kory_Toombs, last year’s champion, perhaps managed to save his entire season by having the Canucks be victorious in six games, as he manages to pick up not just 4 Points but 8 Points instead, since they are his Stanley Cup Pick. Addit and Kentona also managed to pick up a Single Point for predicting that the series would go six.
- - -
After the end of the 1st Round, UPRC has a six point lead over Addit and Kory_Toombs who are currently tied for second place coming into the next round. Kentona, who still has an outside chance, is currently in fourth place with thirteen points behind UPRC for the lead. (He’s got some major catching up to do!)
- The Bracket, Leaderboard and Thread have now all been updated!

Next year, I am going to go about making my picks as usual, and then I am going to WRITE DOWN THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE. Then I might have a chance.
Why wait until next year when you can test this newfound strategy right here, right now! You still have an outside chance of (perhaps) winning this thing. Why not give it a go??? If it fails, then…I don’t know what to tell you.

And the Flames remind me so much of the old Canucks teams of the early 2000’s where they had amazing forwards and defence but their goaltenders couldn’t even stop a beachball, lol. In fact, I remember used to seeing these old memes all of the time on the Canucks boards about how much our goaltenders used to suck. It seems like ever since we traded for Luongo all of those years ago, those worries are now a thing of the past…
And speaking of those Canucks, lol - I can’t believe that they won; they absolutely steamrolled the Blues last night! I would never imagined that they would get this far so quickly with this core, especially against last year’s Stanley Cup champions, but - here they are.
And, yeah, Vegas is DEFINTELY not going to be easy next round. But the Canucks are playing with house money right now and are extremely loose compared to a team that has Stanley Cup aspirations, so...who knows??? Maybe they can knock out the Golden Knights and make it even farther? In some way (even thought it will probably hurt me in the pool), I would definitely LOVE to see a Vancouver, Colorado Western Conference Final. That'd be fun.
And, also, apparently, the second round is starting…tonight??? (Wha…?)
I’ll need everyone’s 2nd Round picks in by Wednesday, August 26th @ 5:00 P.M. PST, 8:00 P.M. EST before the Bruins and Lightning Game 3 starts, okay?
I have an idea who I’m probably going to go with, but I’ll finalize it probably sometime either by tonight or tomorrow.
Western Conference:
(1) Vegas Golden Knights V.S. (7) Vancouver Canucks
(2) Colorado Avalanche V.S. (3) Dallas Stars
Eastern Conference:
(1) Philadelphia Flyers V.S. (7) New York Islanders
(2) Tampa Bay Lightning V.S. (4) Boston Bruins

What's up with the Flyers? They are on a roll. Maybe if I bet against the Canucks again they will win again...

* Finds out that Philipp Grubauer, Colorado Avalanche’s #1 Goalie, gets hurt in Game 1 and that Dallas is his Stanley Cup Pick *
U-Uhhh, I mean…my condolences. (Seriously, I hope he’s okay.)
Anyways - it’s pick day! I had an AMAAAZZZING first round (6-1-1) to put me back into this thing. Now, I’m going to have to hope for similar magic to happen once again in order to have a chance in the final two rounds (I hope). Here goes nothing!

Golden Knights Over Canucks In 6
The last time I voted against the Canucks, they managed to win. I’m hoping that if I do the same thing again, they’ll manage to win this one, too.
Same thing like before; my heart will be forever with the Canucks, but my brain says, “What are you, stupid or something!?” So I shall listen to my brain.
Stars Over Avalanche In 7
Even before the Grubauer injury (seriously, I hope he's okay), I was still intending on picking the Stars, anyway. One, because if I have any chance to catch up to UPRC in the standings, I have no choice BUT to pick them (consider that they’re my Stanley Cup Pick and all that); and, two, it’s because I think they actually might be able to pull this one off. Call it a hunch or whatever, but I think that the Stars will have enough to do it and shock the world.
Flyers Ov…

What's up with the Flyers? They are on a roll.
Flyers over Islanders in 5

On...second thought, since Kentona is now picking them (and has now officially cursed them with his bad luck) – I think I’ll go with instead…
Islanders Over Flyers In 6
I’ve been mulling this one over back and forth for a while, but, in the end, I think I’ll go with the Islanders; a solid defensive group with a defensively-minded coach and enough firepower that can match wits with the Flyers any day. Plus, I think Carter Hart might be a "little" over his head in this one compared to facing off against the Canadiens.
Lightning Over Bruins In 6
Without Tuukka Rask in net, I just don’t think that the Bruins have that much of a chance against a stacked Lightning team that's looked quite good thus far and is on a mission to finally win that championship that’s alluded them all of this time. I think Boston does all that it can to make this interesting and competitive, but it will be the Lightning in the end that will prevail and move on.
- Let the mayhem begin, Mr. Bond (everyone).

Playoff Update:
The Boston Bruins threw as many shots as they possibly could against Andre Vasilevskiy only to come up just short in double overtime as they are taken care of by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 5 Games. The Lightning will now await the winner of the Islanders / Flyers series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Addit and Kory_Toombs were the only ones who picked the Lightning to make it through and both pick up 2 Points each.
- - -
UPRC’s overall lead has now shrunk to four, as Addit and Kory_Toombs happen to make up some ground going into tomorrow’s games. JDogg1717 is now mathematically eliminated.
- The Bracket, Leaderboard and Thread have now all been updated!
Good job, Dallas! Lol them into a false sense of optimism before ultimately crushing them in (hopefully) Game 7. You can do it boys!!!
And I would cry for Boston but…nah…
Also, apparently, if any one of the Islanders or Golden Knights happen to win their series tomorrow (or both) - Kentona will be mathematically eliminated, as he’s really just holding on by a prayer at this point. He can’t officially clinch last place and the Draft Lottery Winner Award just yet, but he’s got a good chance to do so as long as he doesn’t pull a miracle out of his ass at the end, lol. And Kory DEFINITELY needs the Golden Knights and Canucks series to go at least seven to still be in the running for first place. Should be fun tomorrow.

Every time I watch highlights of Canucks vs GoldenKnights, I see the clip starts in the Vegas end, and I think oh yes this is gonna be a Vancouver goal, but alas...
I can’t believe that the Canucks managed to pull it out of their ass and not only managed to save their entire season - and with Demko in net, mind you - but Kentona and Kory_Toombs’ as well. Unbelievable... Kentona is still mathematically alive!
Well…look at it this way as a positive: As a Montreal Canadiens fan, you should be absolutely ecstatic that Boston is now gone. Sure...that means that your road to winning this thing just got a hell of a lot harder and all that, but, hey, that's what makes life so interesting.

Canucks win 2 more and have a cake walk to lifting the Stanley cup against the next 2 teams they meet. Bold prediction?

Well, you’re already halfway there! Suddenly, your “bold prediction” doesn’t seem as crazy as it once seemed, lol. I can’t believe that the Canucks are going to a Game 7 - yeaaaahhhh!!!
And thus…it comes down to this:
- If Dallas wins, and Vegas happens to win, I’ll be in the lead either by 2 points over UPRC, or 6 points, depending on whether New York can pull it off against Philadelphia on Saturday.
- But if Vancouver wins, and Colorado happens to win, Kory will then be in the lead by either 2 points over UPRC, or 4 points, depending on whether New York can also knock off Philadelphia on Saturday.
- However, for UPRC to still maintain his lead, he’ll need Colorado and Vegas to BOTH win. Philadelphia winning would also help, but it’s not really required to stay on top.
- And for Kentona to still be mathematically alive and have a slim chance of winning the pool, he first needs Colorado to win for sure (a Dallas win would automatically eliminate him), followed up by a Vegas win. The New York and Philadelphia series won’t change anything, regardless of the result.
- And if Kentona DOES happen to get eliminated, he still can’t fully clinch last place until we find out who picks who in the Conference Finals. Then we'll know.
So…yeah…a lot of stuff can happen tomorrow.
Either way, I’ve enjoyed all of the carnage and all of the upsets thus far. Whatever happens, the Canucks have exceeded expectations far more than I could have ever imagined, and they'll only get better over time. So, either way, they're still playing with house money.
Playoff Update:
It was the young Finnish rookie, Joel Kiviranta, who scored himself a hat-trick tonight as the Dallas Stars knocked off the Colorado Avalanche in overtime to win a thrilling Game 7 and now move on to the Western Conference Finals.
Addit is the big winner today, as not only does he manage to pick up 4 Points for predicting that the Stars would win and win in seven, but since they are his Stanley Cup Pick, those points are then doubled to a whopping 8 Points! Kentona also manages to salvage something out of the Colorado loss and picks himself up a Single Point.
However, unfortunately for Kentona, the Dallas win officially eliminates him from contention. (Better luck next year, buddy.)
And in the final game today, Thatcher Demko did all that he could, but it wasn’t nearly enough, as the Vegas Golden Knights managed to finally get something by him and knock out the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7. They will now play the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals for a chance at the Stanley Cup.
Addit, Kentona and UPRC all picked the Golden Knights to win and receive 2 Points each. Kory_Toombs picks up a Single Point that gets doubled to two (because it’s his Stanley Cup Pick) in order to keep himself levelled.
- - -
With the Dallas win, Addit has now rocketed himself up to first place in the overall standings with a 4 point lead over UPRC for second place and an 8 point lead over Kory_Toombs for third. He’s also the only remaining contestant left with his Stanley Cup Pick still intact.
- The Bracket, Leaderboard and Thread have now all been updated!
Well, you’re not going to win if you only manage to get 14 shots on net compared to 34, lol. Thatcher Demko deserved better than this… But, hey, credit to the Golden Knights; they controlled most of the play, looked unbelievably fast, and really deserved to win this one in the end.
This is a bittersweet loss for sure. But hey, the Canucks managed to do far better than most people (including myself) originally thought. They’re still young and have a bright future ahead of them with Horvat, Boeser, Petterson, Hughes and Demko leading the way. They’ll be back.
And I guess on the plus side of things - Dallas managed to come through for me and NOT choke like they did last year. Yipppeee!!!
- Now COME ONNNNNNN Islanders tomorrow!

Playoff Update:
The Philadelphia Flyers tried their very best to complete the 3-1 comeback in the series but it simply wasn’t enough, as the New York Islanders win Game 7 and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1993 and will now play the Tampa Bay Lightning for a chance to face off for the Stanley Cup.
Addit and Kory_Toombs were the only ones who picked the Islanders to prevail and receive 2 Points each.
- - -
After the conclusion of the 2nd Round, it is Addit who has come back from the depths going 10-1-1 in the last two rounds and now has a 6 point lead over UPRC for second place while Kory_Toombs, who is currently sitting in third place, still has an outside chance of winning the pool by being 8 points back. Although it may look rather grim for the two former champions, there is still an outside chance for the both of them to catch up in the last three series remaining. Can they possibly make the comeback???
- The Bracket, Leaderboard and Thread have now all been updated!
Good job, Islanders. You did your part.
(Fun fact: My mom’s second favourite team in the NHL is the Philadelphia Flyers and she was so certain that they would complete the comeback and is now devastated that the Flyers managed to blow it. Lol, oh well.)
And I’m hoping that I don’t possibly jinx myself for saying this too prematurely yet, considering that there’s still a smaaallll chance that I could still possibly lose this and all, but…holy can of spaghettios! Are you telling me that after all of these years of futility, embarrassment, and last year finishing in dead last and almost blowing that by purposely trying to tank and having it almost backfire on me that I’m almost “this close” to finally winning one of these things!?!?!? Oh my god - it’s a Christmas miracle!!!
All right. So here’s who we got left in the quest for Lord Stanley’s Giant Inflatable Mug:
Apparently the NHL hasn’t fully released the whole schedule past Game 1 as of yet, so I’m assuming that the deadline to get your Conference Finals picks in is probably by Thursday, September 10th @ 5:00 P.M. PST, 8:00 P.M. EST…pretty much before the start of Game 3 either series.
Anyways...since I’m in the driver seat, I guess I’m the one that has to go first and pick ‘em before the rest of you do for strategic reasons. Here goes nothing…!!!

* everybody right now
Golden Knights Over Stars In 5
Now, if the situation hadn’t quite gone in my favor in the last couple of series and I was down in the pool, I probably would have picked Dallas in this one as a final hail mary to the heavens. But, fortunately for me, everything went according to plan and I don't have to do that. But, this is probably where I think the buck stops for Dallas and they have served their true purpose in life (…at least for me).
I’ve been struggling back and forth on whether Dallas wins either one game or two…but I’ll think pick them to just win one. I think Dallas got seriously lucky to beat the Avalanche in the last series, and against a much stronger team in the Golden Knights, I just don’t think they have enough to get past them... (Sorry Dallas. I know I won’t get the bonus multiplier by going against you and all that, but…I-I just wanna win this pool so badly! I’m NOT going to jeopardizing that for a potential chance for some messily bonus points...not now!)
Lightning Over Islanders In 6
This one I’m a bit more confident about going with and I’m going to pick the Lightning in six in this one. The Islanders have done a very job to get to this point, as they are the final qualifying team left in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and should make this quite interesting against the Lightning. But this is the Lightning series to ultimately lose here and I don't think they will lose it here.
- - -
Now UPRC and Kory_Toombs - the ball is in your court. In order to possibly pull off a Christmas miracle of your own, you’ll either need to pick the Stars or the Islanders and hope to god that they possibly come through for you, or pick the Golden Knights and Lightning like I did, and pick a different set number of games in hopes of collecting those vital bonus points necessary to make that comeback. That’s your only hope!
And as for Kentona, the question here is this: …Will he tank or won’t he tank in order to guarantee himself last place? The world wants to know...
(Come on, Kentona, seriously do it! Stars in 4, Islanders in 4! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!)
