NAME CHANGE?
Posts
Look, I love RPG Maker, RPG making, and the community as much as the next guy, so this topic is not about the community itself.
But isn't our name kind of typecasting us to just be about RPG Making when we welcome any game genre with open arms?

Technically the site name is "RMN". However, it originally stood for RPG Maker Network. It was never my intention to create an RM-only website.
Yeah, but try as we might to just identify the site name as RMN, the url www.rpgmaker.net, like I said, somewhat typecasts us. I remember before there was discussions to change the url, did anything come of that?
I don't remember these discussions...
Anyways, I'm fine with the current domain. The site's main focus is RPGmaker, and RPG making, so the name is suitable. Plus, it sure sounds better than gaming world!
Also, just so you know, if the domain for rmn ever freed up, I would buy it as soon as I found out :)

No it isn't. The site's main focus is gamemaking period. Sure, RPG Maker is the most popular thing on the site and the community, and well, that's one thing and that's fine, but that's not the site's intended main focus as a whole.

so what kind of domain would you like to see?
One that says 'Hey we accept, discuss, and play every genre of game besides RPGs?' I don't mind of RPG Maker the most popular thing being used (hell it's the only thing I currently use) and the site is RPG Making centered by proxy, but I don't want the site being typecast into thinking 'hey we're just about RPGs. I want it to be 'The site's main focus is ALL gamemaking and genre'. I'm not looking for LESS RPGs, but MORE of other things.
Yup. The site was built to do more than just RM stuff. Hence, the multitude of genres and engines available.
If a new name was found and a domain available for something we liked, the site would use it.

I always thought that the site was focused on RPG making. Which obviously isn't a bad thing at all. A genre-specfic makersite. (Though hopefully not a maker-specific makersite)
And no-one can really agree on what an RPG is anyway so nearly all games fit in!

The site is only focused on RPG Making because that's what's currently the most popular, and that's fine, you'll find no opposition for that because the site is made for all genres and engines. The site wasn't made (at least when WIP made it) for just RPG Making or a specific focus on RPG Making. It's for everything.
With that said, I'm going to begin brainstorming on a genre neutral name for the site, and I implore anyone to help.
I can see people who use things like Game Maker getting put off by the name. This place is too RM-centric as it is, and the name doesn't help much.
Problem is rmn.net is some german site, and rmn.com is parked.
Even if we don't end up changing the name, it's always fun to throw around new ideas.Township Games! *cringe*
Icy Cool Game Making Hand of Death Club.

Also: I think the name is pretty suitable as it is. I can understand complaints along the lines of of HEY THE NAME SHOULD BE MORE NEUTRAL, but I really don't believe it's so pressing that it'll discourage members who don't fancy RPGMaker. A name is a name, after all; it's the content and community of a site that keeps people around.

Hahaha.

author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=2831.msg54255#msg54255 date=1231276541I read the topic. Can we be adults and have a discussion without you backhandedly insulting anyone you disagree with?
I'm not intending to cause any offense, but that's dumb, BM. Didn't you read the topic at all?
What I was trying to put across is that RMN at this point has an established atmosphere, member-base, and set of particular goals. It has an identity. Change for the sake of change is somewhat silly, and that identity isn't something we should so readily sacrifice. I'm not totally against a name change, but unless a suitable alternative arises, I view it as a pretty pointless gesture.

Now you know how I feel.
Also, we should totally rename ourselves Land of the Chipsets. :D Or even... Roman Mongoloid Nation.

*shrugs* I have never really thought of RMN as focused on RPG making, although I think of it as RMN, not RPGMaker Network. I don't make any RPGs anyways...
