It's markedly different from what FFXII was/is, selecting a menu option and you character swings a sword once, waits for the bar to fill, swings a sword again, waits for the bar to fill, etc
This time around it looks a lot more action oriented and fluid, with combos, air juggling, the ability to fluidly switch between magic and melee, some sort of Chain system, and quick alternating attacks between two party members on one enemy.

Final Fantasy XIII is coming out for the XBOX 360 as well. And who knows? With the developments that have surfaced, I think SE is trying to bring back the Final Fantasy series to greatness.

So do you think FF should have died a long time ago? I don't, it's a great series, but when I saw FF12's battle system (and this is the only reason), I started to hate SquareEnix for taking away what got me into RPG's in the first place, the classical battle system. Since FF12, they've (apparently) been making nothing but shit (The Last Remnant battle system was even worse than FF12's, but I've yet to play Infinite Undiscovery)
It is obvious that the battle system in most games is what pulls me in.

It's more along the characters and stories. They don't stand out anymore. I mean, you can only have so many zippers on your clothes and increasing the size of your sword to only so big. :P I really don't think a series should get up to THIRTEEN games. Not counting the mounds of crap they managed to push out that isn't even in the steady flow (Crystal Chronicles, FFVII sequels, etc.) It's.. It's just not exciting anymore to see a new Final Fantasy game. It's kind of like bad sitcoms, they try to think up more things when in reality, all there is, is a group of friends in the big city with the gay guy and the funny black dude, and they all rotate with who's nailing who.

Yes, I know about that. Apparently, it will have a full "proper" real time battle system, graphic violence in battles, and be completely unrelated to FFXIII's storyline or world, which begs the question, why tie it in by giving it a confusing name involving the number XIII? Still, it actually, to me, looks better than the actual XIII and is PS3 exclusive, so I may just check it out.

Huzzah! New trailer out that actually features Gameplay! And I've gotta say...I'm impressed! Looks fun. Kind of like an FF X/X-2 and XII fusion of sorts. A very fast-pased battle system.

Nope, not the first. There was Terra in FFVI before her, and also Yuna in X-2. But yes, female mains are quite rare.

I know SquareEnix has a tendency to give characters wierd names, but come on, Lightning is a retarded name.
Unless there's a direct relationship with Cloud from FF7. (lol, lightning cloud)

Hrmm...well, I'm sure that I read somewhere before that "Lighting" was not her real name. Instead, it was a sort of Code Name she used, or something along those lines. So yeah, Lightning might not really be her TRUE name, but rather something she goes by.

Actually most Final Fantasy leads have had meterology and geography-related names for a long time.
Terra (earth)
Cloud
Aerith (from aero or archaic form "aer")
Squall (it is a type of wind gust)
Garnet (a type of rock that is often polished for jewels)
Tidus (in reference to water)

Also I just looked it up and when originally started Basch was the main character in Final Fantasy XII. Vaan and Penelo were added at the last minute or whatever for marketing reasons(according to Wikipedia)! It makes sense because Vagrant Story starred a mature man, and the main character in Final Fantasy Tactics was portrayed in a progressively more positive light as he aged throughout the game.
