[NSFW] NUDITY IN ART (REDEMPTION)
Posts
With graceful permission from Kentona, I've decided to reopen a thread discussing nudity in the art world...
...and to redeem myself from my past stupidity :P
So, the question was...
Do you like/tolerate nudity in art? Discuss.
As I've said before, I don't mind it; I mean, I shouldn't, since I draw it. What are your thoughts?

I Blame the snake in the Garden of Eden...
I think its ok, if its drawn in good taste. or at the least with a purpose. such as art from olden times or even nudity today. but stuff such as drawing nude pictures for no reason is just stupid
Nudity in Art and Nudity in Porn are TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS.
I am okay with both of them. But I like to get things straight here.
No offense, Mitsuhide, but what you described in your original post was, in fact, porn. Drawing something because you are attracted to it/hope others will be is porn. If it is drawn to entice people in a sexual way, it is porn.
Examples of NOT porn:
The Venus
The David
As I said, I have no problem with porn. If everyone involved is consenting (or better, drawn), then it's not harming a single person. Humans have natural urges, and it's better to release those urges than deny them.
But nudity for the sake of displaying the art of the human form and nudity for the sake of drawing hot naked girls, they're very different.

So, are you saying that if one's drawing displays the art of the human body then the particular person/character cannot be attractive/sexy?
I willfully and respectfully disagree.
I, myself, have no problem with porn either, but that doesn't that there may be people out there who find that, in either porn or art, the naked people/characters displayed in them cannot be attractive or vice versa. Someone may look at a painting/drawing and think the woman/man is attractive or sexy, (and may even become aroused) even if the painting/drawing was NOT made to do that.
I completely understand what you're saying, aprilschild, but there's a reason I have this personal saying... "Art CAN be sexy". Because it CAN. I understand that the majority of society may disagree with me there, but I guess I just different than everyone else. And I don't mean like, "OMG, SHE'S SO HOT, MUST F*CK!!!", I mean "Yeah, the woman in this drawing looks sexy.", the latter being what I think is okay.
Of course, this doesn't include porn, which I know is intentionally suppose to be hot and arousing, but that's not my argument; I'm talking about art. On a side note, there are some people, excluding myself, who think porn IS art, but I believe that art isn't supposed to make you want to immediately pull your clothes off and masturbate, especially in a museum.
To reiterate, I believe the person/character displayed in a work or art (painting or drawing) CAN be attractive/sexy; meaning their pose, facial expression, or their body itself.

I DO agree with this, but it is somewhat vague. Deviant Art's policies explain pornography the best...
You prohibit the submission of 'pornographic imagery'; what do you consider this to be?When we mention 'pornographic content' in our policies we are specifically referring to specific subjects which we will clarify below.
We apologize if the descriptions below are slightly graphic.
The following contents are considered unacceptable for submission in either visual art or literature form and will be subjected to immediate removal without notice.
• Masturbation
Hands should not come into contact with genitalia in a manner which is clearly a display of fondling or masturbation.
• Sexual Intercourse.
Subjects should not be depicted in a clear display of sexual intercourse. This includes depictions of sexual penetration, oral to genital contact, genital to anal contact, and oral to anal contact without exception. Some depictions of same sex genital to genital contact and some depictions of oral to breast contact might qualify under this guideline as adjudicated by staff but not all will be considered an automatic violation of policy.
• Sexual body fluids (actual or simulated).
There should be no depiction of semen or vaginal lubricants.
• Erections.
Male subjects may not be depicted with an erection.
• Vaginal or Anal Spreading
Female subjects should not be depicted with their vaginal area manually spread open by hand or manipulated open by any other artificial means. Neither sex should show the anus manually opened in a similar fashion.
• Adult oriented (sexual) toys.
"Adult toys" consisting of dildos, strap-ons, vibrators, etc. are not allowed.
Here's the link to that page is you don't believe me.

THIS, the things mentioned above, are basically what I believe crosses the line between porn and art. If a work of art does not have these in them, in my opinion, it is not porn, despite how attractive the person/character may be (which, again, is okay for the character to be).
The thing about art is that it's a form of expression. I have no problem whatsoever with people expressing themselves. You can't expect everyone to be comfortable with what they see, though.
Do I have a problem with nudity? I can't say that it bothers me. However, when such art is a means of self expression, the content is going to reflect back to you. Lots of people draw nudes for various reasons. When you draw nudes in an anime style and choose to age them at 17, you should expect some people are not gonna be comfortable with it. Point is, you are who you are, and you've chosen to share a piece of who you are with others. Gotta take the bad in with the good.

I have added a NSFW tag for obvious reasons.
Stupidity alert: What does NSFW mean?

I don't really think posting that was necessary or appropriate. You can't compare a website's submission guidelines with peoples' individual interpretations or opinions. No, I wouldn't call just any picture of a nude character porn. However, I would classify it as gratuitous nudity, in the same manner a James Bond film would. I don't call it art, and I don't call it porn.

I was simply giving insight. Even if they are guidelines, they still are someone's opinions, right? Just so happens that they're mine, too.
Anyway, I don't want to get off topic and get this thread locked too.
NSFW = Not Safe For Work ::)
I agree with deviantART's policy, as well as what others have said so far. There's an underlying factor of intent on the creator's part involved with any work depicting sexual content. Whether something is supposed to be sexual just for the sake of it, or meant to be a depiction of the beauty of sexaul material makes all the difference.
While I find sexual content to be distasteful no matter how it's used, it's usually easy to tell the difference between someon's artistic endeavors and some idiots' sexual fantasy. Of course, there are still some that blur the line further...

That's why the pic was in a spoiler -_-" sorry.
Anyhow you can remove the tag, I've (And so have you) removed the image...

What was the picture of? Or does it even matter now?
Here is a good item that crosses the line at some points - pinups.
I have long been a fan of the pinup. They are sexy, voluptuous, interesting, fun, and beautiful. My boyfriend got me, among many other gifts, a beautiful pinup art calendar. None of these are photos, they're all paintings, and I love looking at them. But do I find them arousing? No. I intellectually know, these girls are sexy. But Not viscerally.
The opposite occurs when I view good porn (bad porn or even average porn just brings me to hysterics). I think you guys understand my point.
Anyway, I'm not really a prude about images or even films. Like I said, as long as no one is hurt, I don't find nudity offensive. (In person is quite another story, my roommate's boyfriend is quite often nude and it REALLY upsets me : ()

Apparently now deviant art is the final word on what is or isn't good taste?
So I'm suspecting this, Feld (but correct me if I'm wrong please), that you understand/agree with my side of the argument?
No, Max. I will say this again, I was only giving insight on the matter, not what I think the final verdict or opinion on art should be. Just giving insight.
