CHRONOLOGY OF THE
LAST ERA
LAST ERA
"Aerial ships of steel that shout lances of fire ply the skies, men wage war by the millions for mere ideas, while the rest starve...Unearthing relics of the past, man is doomed to repeat the mistakes that buried his ancestors. This series of events that are coming to pass have been prophesied as the Last Era. This tale is a chronology of the very events that transpired during that worlds darkest hour..."
Hey dudes, and I hope the title of the topic didn't turn you off; it was just to get you to click. Advertising, marketing, you understand. Anyway, some of you guys are aware of the game I'm working on, and some of you have even played the demo a while back. Well, a lot of work later and a name change (which is pending), I'm still chipping away at it. I have a new and improved demo in the works, and maybe even a chapter release, but before that I want to get the word out and some feedback. I've been improving the game a lot since the last demo and I really want this one to be good.
STORY
After decades of war between the Sol Empire and the United Gradian Alliance, both sides have finally decided that enough was enough, and both superpowers pushed for, and finally obtained peace with the Paxus Treaty, an indefinite treaty of nonaggression between the two powers. Both the Empire and the Alliance populations are overjoyed by the news, long tired of the constant transcontinental battles, losing loved ones, and general chaos spread by the war. Both countries begin moves to rebuild their infrastructures, regain the trust and foundation of their populace, and some people even use the opportunity to travel from the Empire and the Alliance to get a taste of the 'other side', and even more, international trade between the two powers looks promising.
But is that all there is to it? The world had grown accustomed to it's many years of war (44 to be exact) and you could almost say the very foundations of civilization were maintained on the Great War between the two powers. The end of the war says nothing about the massive socioeconomic problems regarding the massive military buildup in both superpowers, large scale rebellions and the status of annexed countries in the Alliance, and the worsening quality of life and overpopulation facing the Empire. Not to mention the vast number of Prelude Relics, ancient superweapons used by both sides, large and small scale, that are unnaccounted for.
Needless to say, there are an incredible amount of issues and problems left in the postwar world, and even some people, or persons that are ready, and have been planning to take advantage of just that. And before someone without reading comprehension (!) gets it mistaken, this isn't an evil empire story. Everybody is fucked up and has blood on their hands here.
Our story takes it back a little bit, and begins the night before the signing of the Paxus Treaty. In position in the Imperial Capital, the site of the signing of the treaty, the Freelancers are in the middle of their final mission in light of the war's conclusion. Tryscal Seiros (codenamed Leo, according to the Zodiac theme of the Freelancers) is one of the twelve Freelancers assigned to the mission. Their objective? To steal one of the Empire's top secret artifacts under the diverted security for the Treaty. The kicker? The employer for the mission is from one of the member nations in the Gradian Alliance.
CHARACTERS
Note: These are obviously not all of the characters, not even close, but they're a few of the important ones.
Tryscal Seiros
Age: 24
The main character in this adventure. Originally from the massive megaopolis capital of the Sol Empire, he left his original 'calling' as a soldier in the Imperial Army to mysteriously switch sides for the Freelancers, a famous mercenary company that takes contracts for the Eastern Alliance. A normal, but battle weary man when it comes to demeanor, he finds himself in a situation after another that he didn't ask for and he wants out of.
Bruce Harcort
Age: 37
An officer of the Imperial Second Reconnaissance Division, Bruce has been loyal and working for the Sol Empire for years from the front lines of the war to top secret intelligence missions. Most prominently, Bruce is at the forefront of the struggle between the Imperial Faction Council of Lords, a cold war of sorts between the two most powerful political entities in the Empire. Fiercely loyal to the crown, and therefore the Imperial Faction, Bruce will do all in his power to protect their interests. Contrary to the nature of his work, Bruce in fact possesses an easy going and informal personality.
Gabriel Lorimar
Age: 24
One of the five members of the Cross Knights, an elite group of commanding officers in the Alliance, with each member except one representing their country of origin. Gabriel, representing the Kingdom of Gradia is known as a rising star, backed up by his skilled swordsmanship and his charismatic leadership abilities. Originating from a prestigious noble family in Gradia, Gabriel throws himself himself at the whims of whatever the Alliance wishes of him with utmost dedication. There are some that whisper his dedication is just him being used by the Alliance royalty, however...
Rosilyn Lorimar
Age: 22
Younger sister of Gabriel Lorimar, and also a member of the Gradian White Hawk unit, a special forces division dealing with long range infantry and reconnaissance. Taught to use rifles by their late father as a teenager, which is significant in itself, given that most firearms are reverse engineered from ancient Prelude weapons, making them rare and valuable even in the military. However, the effort wasn't wasted, as Rosilyn is a very skilled sniper, continually earning her stripes during the war. However, this hasn't broken her civilian stride, as she is still very much a young woman, with mannerisms and poise befitting someone of her attractiveness and position, which means she's relatively easygoing, even considering her military upbringing.
What's most interesting is that she's the former lover of Tryscal Seiros. How will their past relationship play a role in the story?
Dais Kreutz
Age: 27
The eldest son of the prestigious Kreutz noble family in Sergil, one of the member nations of the Alliance and childhood friend of Gabriel Lorimar. The Kreutz family is known for its massive wealth through business, and Dais was being groomed to be the next successor to the head of house. However, his decision (and success) in joining the Cross Knights shocked his entire family, Still on good terms with them, he does plan on doing his duty as heir, but he insists on seeing the world first. Dais is a cool customer, and his easygoing yet sophisticated manner sometimes betray his status and importance. However, once crossed, his powerful magic that he's naturally gifted at can burn near any enemy to cinders. There's something off about this guy, though...
SCREENSHOTS
KINDA BIG SO I HAD TO PUT THEM IN A SPOILER TAG CLICK ANYWAY THEY'RE NOT THAT BIG
SCREENSHOTS FROM MY OLD TOPIC BUT THEY'RE STILL RELEVANT
READ THIS TOO!
-Another demo is coming out, well, it's similar to the one before, but longer and different (and better) but I'll need beta testers! Who's game?
-I'm thinking of releasing this game in Chapters, with three Chapters. Any thoughts?
-I don't really like the title screen I made! I see tons of games with cool logos, but I just don't have that artistic talent. Can anyone help me out with that?
-I have a demo for this game up, but that's the old one! Feel free to play it, but that's not the shining star I want to release in this topic.
-I really want to make this game excellent, and at least memorable. If anyone was wondering if I actually made a game between rambling about community and all that shit, here it is.
-If you want any more information, any at all, just ask! I really want to make a great game for myself, and of course you guys to play!

I have serious fucking issues with your subtitle for this topic. Watch it there, brogurt.
Lighten up. It's just in good fun and light heart. Of course I don't think my game is significantly better than anyone elses I don't take gamemaking that seriously to (which is why the subtitle is what it is), but I do believe in clever advertisement. However like I said, I am mostly kidding. If it bothers you that much, I'll remove it, but going I HAVE SERIOUS FUCKING ISSUES with no elaboration doesn't make you seem too...coherent.
Elaboration:
Your game is neither the last rm2k3 game ever made nor one of the last. Additionally it is way too early to be calling it great. Both of those things remain to be seen..
I got literally destroyed for saying that I hoped my game could become a killer app for RMXP, and this is much less modest than that.
And if it's meant as a joke, it sure isn't readily apparent, and the rest of the topic seems perfectly serious to me.
Is that better?

Well sure. I am aware that my game isn't the last RM2K3 game ever made and I hope people see it as anything close to great. Anyone who speaks to me at length about my game knows I am pretty humble about it! Sure, here's hoping, but it's mostly in jest; I don't take myself too seriously when it comes to game making, and a silly subtitle is testament to that. For the record, I do not think my game will be the last nor greatest RM2K3 game ever made. I am just kidding around. I do not plan to willingly remove the subtitle though!
And with that said, let's start talking about the game itself, shall we?
I do remember playing this demo last year. I remember I couldn't get to the first save point without dying =) Did you do any difficulty rebalancing since the last demo came out?

I have done immense tweaking on the difficulty and the extreme difficulty that made the game unplayable for many is now completely eliminated.
I never knew Feld made games :o I've never heard you talk about your game, at least.
I'll be sure to give this a tryz :)

RPG Maker is serious business.
Come on, who could take a subtitle like that seriously?
Hey Feld, I thought this was called something else, or this another game? Because it uses sort of the same rips and shit. Anyways, yeah I was a bit surprised on the title, thinking that this was a "end of the world for rm2k and such" but nope, I like the approach to draw more people in. As for the game itself, seems a little interesting to me, might have to give this a go when you finish a demo. :)
One thing that turns me off is the protagonist's name...
Tryscal? Seriously, TRYSCAL?
And a few lines below you have a guy named Bruce and another one named Gabriel. Two normal (and actually cool) names and one which sounds like you threw a bunch of letters into a hat and then randomly pulled them out and formed a word.
One more thing that bugs me is the title screen, which is really lame; it suits a game made in RM2K SEVEN YEARS AGO, but nowadays the standards for title screens are a bit higher, thankfully. If you can't make a better one yourself, then find someone to do it for you, it shouldn't be hard (post a request here or on any other RM board).
But apart from these two things the rest sounds fun, so I'll be looking forward to your little project. I'll refrain from downloading your old demo, since you say it's not representative of the new version.
PS Topic name is a bit pretentious.

Nice job reading his post. =P
Anyway, yeah, didn't this have a different name? When did you change it?
I actually noticed the fine print at the bottom after I had sent my post, but I couldn't be bothered to edit it :)
I'd like to know how the gameplay is, you didn't describe it at all. What is it like? Have you done anything to the DBS? What about outside the DBS, any good gameplay features? Honestly the story and characters are not too important for me in an advertisement topic since it is all in a persons presentation. But I will say that you threw WAY too many names out there that nobody will care about really. There are just too many of them, and I can see people getting confused if you don't show the importance of some of them in game. Try not to drop so many names at once, I see that some people have already said this. The screenshots look nice, though.
Some pointers off the top of my head:
-Do not extend dialogue that doesn't fit inside of one message box (see your first screen). It's much easier to take in the information when it doesn't end mid sentence. Modify your dialogue so that it fits, you would be surprised at how much more professional (and how much easier on the reader) it is when you don't do this. Just end that sentence with "began" and modify the following sentence by replacing the next few words with something different.
-Gabriels battle character is cut off by the system set.
-It doesn't look like the battlers animate. Correct me if I'm wrong. If they don't, fix that!
-Create borders for your facesets. Open up an image editing program and make borders around the facesets (I would make something similar to the system set for consistency). Right now they don't look right in the message box because they're cut off.
After posting all that I just checked the game on the website and you have a little bit of gameplay details. I'm not sure how it is though, they don't seem like much to me. I don't believe I played your last release, but I vaguely remember you telling me to. I'll wait for this, since it seemed very much like a beta or alpha release last time. Good luck with the project!
Topic name doesn't work for attention, by the way. If anything, you're HURTING your game by adding that, even if it you weren't serious. Your game should be able to stand on its own two legs without you (the creator) hyping it up like that.

So far, your game looks pretty good, with a healthy dose of nostalgia without going too deeply away from the heavily Japanese-influence character designs most players have grown accustomed to seeing. The information presented about the story sounds interesting, and the characters seem to be off to a good start.
I'd like to see a playable demo, or a video of game-play. Having made two RM2k3 games myself, I know how infuriating working with the battle engine can be, so I'd like ot see if you've done anything unique with it, or not.
Like Holbert, I have to chuckle at the people who bristled at your topic. Anyone who is turned off by the topic title is either looking for something to argue about, or insecure about their own Game Making skills. (And I expect to get some bristles in my direction for that comment) Either way, well played, sir.

While I do have a few gameplay features on which I'll edit in after this post, for the most part, I'm just making a good, solid game. No, I'm not saying that I didn't add anything, but my game's appeal will be mostly in the presentation of the story, characters, aesthetic, and gameplay, right down to the battle animations. My game has been praised on its atmosphere before, so I'd like to make that a drawing point of my game instead of a whole bunch of gameplay features that are hard to promise and take forever to make. I do have some snazzy things in mind, though.

I thought about it, and I decided to probably leave them still, FF6 style.

Of course it does, the topic already has over 250 views at the time of this posting. That's what advertising is all about, making your product seem like the shit even if it remains to be seen if it is. It makes the person go "Hmm, what is this?" Besides like I said, it's all in jest (as in don't take it seriously.)
A lot of games have been strung high in the past for overhyping themselves, that is why people can be a little uppity when someone generates interest in this kind of way.
Then those people should chill out.

I stated this in the original post. man. :( I need a new title screen and I do not have the capability to make a good one.
By the way, I still need beta testers.
@Fallen-Griever
Well, if that's the way you feel, that's fine with me. :)
@Feldschlacht IV
I'll make one for you. PM me and tell me what you want. Don't stop kicking arse!
You should do, it's a retarded comment.

author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=3084.msg60498#msg60498 date=1233759654I wasn't talking specifically about the character names. The problem I am seeing is that there are lots of weird names and background information. If you don't have the correct pacing, all of it could fall apart. And when you try to build on those certain things later, it could make it even worse. The comments on your game page and what FG said here should say something. I didn't get the kicker, maybe I wasn't supposed to? But anyway, I'm trying not to assume things since I've never played this. It sucks that there aren't many enhancements to the gameplay though, as that is what draws me in to any RM game. I would even be fine with you making a gameplay mechanic out of those ancient relic things you mentioned. I'm glad you didn't add unnecessary things like most people and are sticking to the basics, but a core mechanic would be nice.
u kidin me? There's five characters, those aren't a lot at all.
I forgot to say that I like the overall style. Are those Romancing Saga 3 tiles you're using? And speaking of atmosphere, what kind of music are you using?
