NUDITY IN GAMES

Foreward: This topic has no relationship to Mitsuhide's nudity in art topic.

Anyway...

Yeah, yeah, the guy with the lesbian avatars makes this topic. Funny. Skipping the irony. =P

This conversation came up the RMN IRC channel when I was talking about how I was going to make 'sexy pictures' of the characters in Craze and I's parody co-op game for RS. I hadn't actually thought much about it until that point, so when Rei passingly asked if I was going to include nudity, I wasn't quite sure how to respond. I am personally totally comfortable doing this, but that isn't the issue, nor why I am hesitant (and probably won't) do this.

As I have mentioned in other topics (especially the old DOAD topic), every choice you make in your game effects your audience. Some people don't care about nudity. Some like it. Some don't at all. This attitude is derived from people's personal beliefs and culture. Not something that easily changes. Commercial games are not quite willing to do this yet, either, because it comes with great potential risks.

So, what do you guys think this? Not necessarily about my conundrum, but about nudity (or the lack thereof) in games in general?
I probably wouldn't be able to find any commerical games I liked that included nudity. Not because it has nudity, that doesn't bother me a single bit, but I'm very pro JRPG and Mario type gamer, and if I saw nudity in those, it would be very strange.

It would never turn me off a game, but it's never really necessary to have it in a video game. Though I couldn't name a game from the top of my head, I'm sure games HAVE used it in the past but it gets angry mothers all protesty, it's not something you wanna put on the box art!

...Although when I was like 12, I used a cheat on the original Sims to remove the shower while someone was using it. Can't have just been me!

Something about nudity in games just seems vaguely embarrassing to me, more so than nudity in any other medium or art form. I don't really know why...

That said, there can be sexy images that aren't nudes, goes without saying, and there can also be the use of nudity that is not at all erotic. Both of those I am fine with in games.
I think nudity in video games is very strange.

Not that I find nudity in any other context strange or embarrassing. The human body is beautiful, and a movie, art, sculpture, or whatever featuring nudity, male or female as part of telling itself can be very effective and artistic. The naked human body is one of the best pieces of art anything has to offer anywhere. I love nudity.

However, in video games I feel its never for any of those reasons; normally when I think of nudity in video games, its very awkward because it seems it was only put in there to appease the nerds playing who would never see a pair of breasts, butt, or a generally a naked female otherwise.

And don't even get me started on the prospect of a naked dude in a videogame.

I've yet to form an opinion on this matter myself, but The Witcher went with nudity, and it was pretty well received. And Age of Conan, too.

Maybe nudity is not exactly a problem, if it doesn't contrast too badly with the rest of the game, and doesn't seem out of place. Also, the audience. There certainly is audience who doesn't mind (much, or at all) nudity in games, but if you're looking for positive receiving from the audience, you must make sure it is just targeted at the right one and people are informed of what they get.

And in other hand, it depends how it is expressed. There's several ways, probably many that work with different cases, but you should be fine as long as you're happy with it and think it is what you want it to represent or deliver to the player.

It's usually pretty tasteless. Suggested nudity, or screen nudity, can be effective. See: LodVX's hot springs event!

Every time I've seen actual nudity in games, especially RM games, it has felt like a disgrace.

On the other hand, sexy outfits with non-functional female armor is totally fine with me, and while I certainly appreciate the value of "realism" in some respects, I don't fall in line with people who are offended by the so-called Chain Mail Bikini.
I'm not too sure about this, actually. The idea of nudity in a game (especially an RM game) is... weird.
If it was nudity for nudity's sake, then I'm opposed, but if it's there for a reason (a proper reason) then I suppose it would be okaaaay. Maybe.
I think the closest I've ever come to nudity in a game was in Loves Requiem where there was a scene where the main hero walks in on his 'side-kick' who had just left the bath (she had a towel on). Of course it was a very important scene because she had been pretending to be a man... ^.^

I'm gonna put a general Maybe/depends as my answer.

Personally, I think nudity in RM games (or any game) is a bit jeuvenile...unless the plot or storyline calls for it. And generic storylines about killing an ancient evil rarely calls for it.
Nudity in video games is hilarious because it is always done so poorly. Its almost like low-res porn!

If you're going to try for nudity, try your best to actually make it fit instead of 'hey its time for nipples and hot throbbing man crotch!' because if you screw it up the game immediately becomes shit. If you don't think you can do it, cut it and focus on something worthwhile.
I think the only video game I've ever seen nudity done in a tasteful and non retarded manner is Xenogears.
The implicit context of a naked body on screen in a game is that you will somehow be able to interact with it, because it is a part of the design and structure. The presentation of the naked body implies an ability for the player to manipulate and play with the body like they would other elements of the game.

For this reason, it is difficult to conceive of ways to present the naked body in a game that doesn't automatically doesn't associate itself with empty exhibitionism (viewing the naked body for erotic sake) and virtual sex (interacting with the naked body for erotic sake).

Nudity as reward is most likely to tend towards the former, and nudity as a part of the ludology will give the player expectations of the latter. For what design purpose does the avatar, npc, or design elements as represented in the body, need to be nude? Does this automatically imply (or anticipate) an erotic experience with the game?

The exceptions are when an avatar is naked and it is at the prerogative of the player to clothe him, the expectation (and the advantage to the player) is in doing so. Does this mean the game is discouraging nudity (anti-nudist?)

I think Age of Conan would be a good example, as would God of War. In the first two, it's just part of the setting. The Conan books never really made a big deal about nudity, and the God of War games always had either nude corpses or Lamias - nothing very enticing there. I expect a game adaptation of John Carter of Mars or the Greek mythology of any sort would do well to present it as part of the setting.

Of course, it can be done badly as well (Hot Coffee is all I have to say here, right?)

Nah, he's been posting screenshots on and off in the screenshot topic.
I think this just turns out awkward in video games.

Yeah, so Karsuman and I have decided that the girls in our RS!VI offering are going to be loosing clothes but not necessarily get nekkid. It seems that you guys are all slightly perverted, but not that perverted (so true).

My personal feelings: considering that most suggestivenessosity is for females, it's a pretty big turn-off for me. That said, a naked male hero would probably be pretty awkward for anybody! Guys with the right pants on are more attractive anyway.
I think there should be more casual nudity in games. I don't get the whole "HOLY SHIT IT'S NAKED"-thing.
The "HOLY COW SHE'S NAKED" phenomena I think comes from a pre-internet experience of having difficulty gaining access to pornography for young males.

I still experience these feelings.
Nudity in 2d and 3d games don't bother me at all.

Yeah. This I guess is the thing I dislike. The thought of nudity automatically goes to porn and sex and all those things. When in reality being naked hasn't got a whole lot to do with all that.
