The fear and the hunger are upon me...
A Terrifying Look Into The Mind And Game-Making Habits of Maximillian Q. McGee Esq.

Oh dear God. After playing Geondun by Craze and peeking at the bewildering array of mechanics on display there, I had a terrible, forbidden urge, a desire I am desperate to suppress.

I had the desire to create a new game.

Just so you know why I would be hesitant to create a new game, let me break out my roster/resume...

GAMES CURRENTLY 'IN DEVELOPMENT' (Not Active Development. Just Uncanceled.)
*Everything Turns Gray (RMVX)
*Mage Duel (RMVX)
*Starseed (RMVX)
*Backstage 2 (RM2k3)
*Ruptured Souls (Rm2k3)

In other words, I have no less than 5 GAMES I consider to be currently in development.

GAMES CURRENTLY 'IN ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT'
*Everything Turns Gray (RMVX). And even then, only kind of.

So yes, that is a lot of games. Let's look at my track record for juggling projects. How many I've caught (released) and how many I've dropped (canceled):

GAMES I HAVE ACTUALLY COMPLETED
*Iron Gaia (RM2K)
*Backstage (RM2k3)
*Iron Gaia: Virus (RM2k3)
*Vermicide (RMVX)

So that's the good news. But on the other hand...

GAMES I HAVE CANCELED, PUT ON INDEFINITE HIATUS, OR OTHERWISE UNOFFICIALLY GIVEN UP ON (I'll try to restrict myself to only the ones I've publicly advertised, but don't be surprised if you've never heard of some of these.)
*Eldritch (RPG Maker 2003)
*Between Two Worlds (RPG Maker 2003)
*Wanderers: Tetra (Code-Off Project, RPG Maker 2003)
*The Shallow Sea (First Quarter 2004, RMXP)
*Iron Gaia 2 (RMXP)
*Shadowrun: Missions (RPG Maker 2003)
*Immortal Hunger (RPG Maker 2003)
*The Tower (RPG Maker 2000)
*Moment of Truth (RPG Maker 2000)

And that is leaving off probably between six and a doze smaller, even more obscure projects that got even less far in their development.

So clearly my juggling track record is not good.

OTHER THINGS GOING ON IN MY LIFE
*Possible new telecommuting job editing dissertations as an independent contractor for a large academic editing/consultation firm. (~50% Chance of Panning Out)
*Possible new actual job with the US Census. (>50% Chance of Panning Out)
*Regular participation in/mentoring of a 4-years-running LARP I wrote and set-up at my old university.
*Finally editing my ridiculously bloated 190,000+ word dark fantasy novel, started in high school, finished early in college.
*GMing an ongoing once-weekly Shadowrun campaign with adventures I author myself.
*Unproductive distractions, such as playing Hero's Realm, Geondun, Resident Evil 5, and god knows what other commercial games in the coming weeks.
*A girlfriend! (If people have been dating more than a couple years, are they engaged by default? :P )
*And much, much more.

So obviously there are just some of the many reasons that I should not, not, not, not ever, ever start a new game. But still the urge is strong enough that I actually went ahead and burned 30 minutes making this topic, instead of just smacking myself briskly across the face and saying, NO, MAX, THAT'S A BAD MAX. The urge is STRONG.

What should I do? Give in to the dark side or staunchly refuse my own Craze-like urges?

Please choose one.

1. "Yeah, go for it, why the hell not!"
2. "Are you fucking insane? No, of course you should not start another game."
3. (Other)

1 is always the answer. =)

Do whatever you feel like.

I prefer quality over quantity when it comes to gamemaking, but ultimately it should be about what you're in the mood for. There's no point in sticking with one game, for instance, unless you have the desire and motivation to do so.

Whichever you choose, we support you. :-*

Are you complimenting the crazy amount of statistics and thought put into Geondun (like did you actually OPEN IT UP and drop your jaw at the database?) or are you insulting my caprices?

Also, yeah, do whatever you want.
To me making games is about fun. Don't always focus on getting them out there all the time. If you want to start a new game, go ahead and have fun with it, sometimes it's good to get a break from your main projects for a side one.
Yeah seriously, I'd only suggest sticking to one project if you have never completed a project before (like I'm trying to do), but since Max is... well see his sig.
I was going to make a topic just like this...weird.

I remember Eldritch!(That was the game with the blue * yellow tree things right?) Also if you know it wont pan out and you have other games you want to finsih I say put it aside for now as it would just put more strain on your already on going projects in the long run.

3) Start a .txt, write down all your ideas, and stash it away. Open it when you get more ideas, and stash it again. Once you have some free time, start the project then.

It works for me.
3. Finish your active projects and THEN do it.

Yes, it does work.
2.

Finish what you start buddy. Don't be like every other RM Maker out there.

Edit: Actually, tell us about it, and let us decide whether you should go with it or not.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

I am thinking that I might...incorporate it into one of my current projects as a spin-off.

As to telling you about it?

I think it is going to be a mech fighting game like Front Mission only with a deeper and darker storyline. I also want it to be very deep and intricate mechanically, with a focus on battles.

Answer: 3 (Anaryu's)

Front Mission style Mecha combat games are all the rage these days. (In the realm of brainstorming)

I know 3 is what I should do, but well, I don't know...it's hard to use your free time to work on something you don't feel like doing.
2. is what you should do. We need more finished games. And discipline.

For harmonic

Mecha has been the rage since 1996. Seriously, people still play Heavy Gear 2 on their XP and Vista machines...and some still have their PS2's hooked up so they can play all those PS2 released Armored Core games.

Plus everyone is looking forward to that new mobile suit game that's like Oblivion only deeper and more rich with gameplay mechanics. I haven't seen a name yet but they said it could happen anytime 2010-2011. No it's not Besthesda Softworks (BS for short HAHA! Losers can't pick a good name.) making it. It was a long thought dead company with vengeance for being forgotten sparkling in it's eyes. In tandom with a well known one that helped with NWN/NWN2.

For Max.
Babbling about mecha aside I say do what your in the mood for but do not forget discipline. More finished games would be cool. Also if you do try and put a mecha game together I suggest using RMXP resources. There is an assload of unused mecha related tiles, charsets, battlers, and everything else you could ever need just sitting around out there. Some of it is Gundam styled but most of it is not.

As many have said already, the number of projects you should be working at the same time should always be expressed as a single digit in binary. I think incorporating the new ideas into the current project is a great way to get around the temptations; and don't be afraid to shift the current project's future paths if they deem fit.

This is an amazing piece of advice; I've been itching to introduce something in a new game, but I found a really amazing way to add it to an existing project and now I'm full steam on that.

Maybe you need to take some of these ideas and introduce them as pieces of your existing games to get your work-desire back, finish that game, AND use your new ideas.

Take GubiD's TBS and add some tactical mech combat to EtG or shift it from mechs to magical mechs/spirits and introduce it as a new "battle" type to Mage Duel, etc.

OR turn it around and make a game based on those with your current ideas; EtG just screams post-nuclear destruction mecha combat with a dark storyline. :)

Ironically the game I've been "adding" new ideas to is a TBS I've been working on for several years off and on between contests, it's already seen 2 small chapter releases, and I totally understand your desire to do some hefty mechanics in a TBS.
