WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN AN RM GAME?

The RPG Maker community is very vast and very diverse. Over the years, we have seen many different games be born and of course, many different styles of games too. Some do better than others, and some are ignored and fall by the wayside.

Thinking about this makes me wonder... What type of RM games do you feel are your favorite?

You could for example prefer the typical jRPG clones such as Legionwood that make up most RM communities, or perhaps you prefer the adventure and horror style RM games that are also popular, such as Ravenwood Horror or One Night.
Another type of RM game that some people enjoy may be a dungeon crawler such as Demon Tower, or else a nostalgic game that tries to emulate the old days, like Dragon Fantasy.

What do YOU like to see when you play an RM game?
Well, I enjoy fun games too. Any particular aspects of a game you prefer over others, or do you just enjoy any game so long as it is fun?
Innovative gameplay. Oldschool RPGs are great and all but games that play differently than your average RTP random-encounter romp, through an evented/scripted modification to the battle system, a drastic change to the way the game pans out, or both, are MUCH more likely to hold my interest. 1873, Demon Tower, Mage Duel and Exit Fate are great examples.

I also like interesting plots, and specifically lots of character development. I don't mind the generic medieval fantasy setting, though I'm partial to more original settings.

I really don't know what I like in an RM* game. If it appeals to me, I play it (or at least download it; usually I spend my time working on my own projects, I admit...). I enjoy everything from The Sword and the Fish to Zephyrus and the Kingdom of Heaven to Naufragar: Crimson.

Things that usually attract me to a game:
-Topics that have more screenshots than walls of text
-Topics that have miniature character bios
-Topics that use bolded and italicized text effectively
-Topics that aren't made completely out of images
-Topics that are proof-read
-Topics that don't use hide tags for anything except truly trival information
-Topics that list what I can expect, but don't go on and on about them

This. I don't want to know your character's shoe size and preferred flavour of toothpaste, but I do want you to show me why I should play your game.
You know when I'm absolutely positive I can tell I'm going to like the game?

-If the topic is by Craze's standards (in which raises good points why screenshots aren't evil as I make them out to be)
-I get to control the character in less than 5 minutes tops
-The gameplay is declared

What do I mean by gameplay is declared? I'm talking about when the mechanics are obvious and implemented with reason. In Kinetic Cipher, the idea behind battles is that if you don't prepare, you are fucked. Before you enter the first dungeon Brickroad implemented an NPC that not only tells you what you need to prepare, but rewards you for doing it.

Implementing 10 minute tutorials is not a good way to go about this BTW.

Some sign that the creator really put effort into the balance/numbers, brief but good cutscenes
Balance in battles. For example, not coming out of every random encounter with a dead party member but at the same time not finishing up a boss in 3 turns.(but dont make it impossible either)
I tried to come up with something but honestly the only thing I could come up with was "good graphics". And even that doesn't apply every time.
In an RPG I like a good story and characters. In general, graphics that won't make my eyes bleed, good mapping and music.

Fun playing, fast battles - I can put up with button mashing and DBS but mixing it up a bit helps.

Also, low lag. Nothing kills an RM game worse than not being able to play it due to lag and/or missing files. (Sorry everyone ^.^;)
I like games that try to revive my feelings of nostalgia for those early days of console RPGs that I loved so dearly. You know, back when slaying a dragon and rescuing a princess wasn't tired and cliche.

Games that get finished. ::)
A clear indication as to what I'm supposed to do, and little pain and frustration in doing said thing. Call me retarded, but I've lost interest in so many games because of unclear objectives.
Beyond that simple asset, anything goes.
Competent battles : There's nothing more annoying that having a game with awful battles. Like you start a game, get into the first battle; and your character's ATB moves a half a inch per two seconds. After the enemy bombards you with status ailments or regular attacks, you get your turn and you do a piddling amount of damage. You win the battle, by a slim margin, and continue... You pause the screen and OH LOOK no items.
~ F12 time.

Please... give enemies low speed. Low enough to give a decent atb speed, but high enough so that the enemy actually gets a chance to do some damage. Also, cut down on the status ailments in the beginning of the game unless there's a very easy way to cure it.

Writing : People, "God you suck." "Heh, I know." isn't good writing. If your main character's a veteran warrior; try making him ACT like it. I've seen a lot of games that show high ranking officers act like sixth graders. Please, just think it through a bit.

Oh wait, this is about what you like...

Well, well balanced battles are important, characterization is important to me as well (sorry, I don't really like those RPGs where you make 4 interchangeable characters to go fight a nameless evil's vaguely established powerz). A coherent plot is always a plus; I know I'm playing a good RPG when I find myself playing for 2 / 3 hours straight (as I did with Exit Fate).

This and/or custom graphics that are more of a pixelated style instead of a detailed style. If it makes me think of Earthbound, I'll love it. I'm never a fan of the more realistic type of stuff.
Interesting events are also important. Exit Fate had me glued to my screen during every cut scene.
Nice to see some active conversation... I started this topic on RRR but they just posted things like "good mapping" and such. I was talking about more the stylistic values of a game rather than it's mapping or graphics etc.

Personally, I like survival horror or JRPG games. Dungeon Crawlers never really draw me in, but if they are immersive enough, such as Max's Everything Turns Grey (I consider it a dungeon crawler as most of it consists of exploration).

The game needs to be polished to a certain extent and have either story or atmpospheric elements that exude mystery plus the game is preferred finished.
