Nice to see some active conversation... I started this topic on RRR but they just posted things like "good mapping" and such. I was talking about more the stylistic values of a game rather than it's mapping or graphics etc.

NOTE: I AM NOT CALLING YOU OUT BLAH BLAH BLAH: Colon: The Sequel:

If they are posting that, I wonder what the community likes, and how shallow they are. When you (okay, I'm not trying to target you so I'm just going to say RICK), er, when RICK says "You could for example prefer the typical jRPG clones such as Legionwood that make up most RM communities," that is like saying "okay I know EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT; please come and confirm it."

I guess this is why RMN, for me (maybe not for RICK) is the least of the evil that we know as RM* forums.

MODIFY: Wait, wasn't this the topic where I called you out, RICK? Where did those posts go?
Well, I'm not trying to "confirm" anything at all. I'm just simply interested in seeing what games people like to play, as opposed to my own tastes.

I have posted this topic on several RM forums now, and RMN have at least gone into some depth about what they like. Something I am surprised about is that survival horror games do not seem to be very popular in any community.

I love horror games and I feel that my true talent emerges in making them as I have a true love for those games so I was a little surprised that nobody enjoys them much.

EDIT: No, that would be the paying for RTP games topic. Please don't start a fight again Craze, I'm not trying to fight here, I'm just trying to start an interesting conversation and find out why people like to play RM games.

Oh, I wasn't trying to start a fight. I just wanted to know where those posts were.

As for horror games: I know that Orig/Azn/Otoko/Max/other people are into them, here. They're not really my cup of tea, though.

It's because they're made in RPG Maker and aren't very good. You can see exactly what's behind you, unless you have a flashlight system (which wouldn't work too well). You're most likely going to control a chibi cute looking character with animu eyes. There's also the fact that there isn't a whole lot of detail in most of the graphics, having a miniature RPG style just doesn't work. Most of the time I see a lot of overdone atmospheric stuff going on, like putting mist everywhere, or darkening everything, or blood splattered all over the walls. The monsters or w/e are usually just events set to (move towards hero) or something, in which someone who's played an RPG Maker game knows exactly how it moves. There's also usually a really lame story vaguely put together where absolutely nothing is explained.

I wouldn't say that it's impossible to make a good horror game in RPG Maker. But it is hard, and doing the above isn't going to fix that. With 3D, you can have as much as a realistic atmosphere as you would in 2D. With a first person or even over the shoulder view, hearing a creepy sound behind you causing you to instinctly turn around only to find nothing really elevates the spookiness. But heck even commercial developers have problems with this.

But if you really want to make a good 2D Horror game that will interest people. Take notes from the original SNES Clock Tower (thats 2D), where there is an actual plot, the graphics are large and detailed, there are a lot of WTF moments, and actually has a good setting. Oh and even though Clock Tower takes place in a mansion like the billions of other rm2k3 games, please choose a more interesting setting than this. What about an outdoor setting or something.

I know we had a topic based on this, but whatever, I wanted to bring my point out further.
I'm not trying to shamelessly plug here, but Fallen Griever says that my game One Night is an example of a good survival horror game made in RPG Maker.

I'd agree that they are hard to make, but scary games CAN be made in RPG Maker. I remember one called Lurking Under Life, which was scarier than most commercial games I know. You don't have graphics on your side, so the trick is to attack the player with atmosphere.

You are.

What does this even change?

When I say detailed graphics, I mean making the graphics more distinguishable and scalable. But it's not about graphics that I'm talking about, its about adding another dimension and detail to increase believability in the atmosphere.

Don't ever say this because its NEVER going to sound like anything but a shameless plug. Anyways, horror games are very much possible. After all, horror books are possible, and all they have to work with is lines of text. You've got that and then some. You just need to figure out how to scare people using what you have, not trying to copy what 3D 1st person engines do. Figure out what makes a good RM horror game, and exploit it.
I guess it could be construed as a shameful plug...

Games that get finished. ::)

Here here.

But an actual response.

What I like is a game that can catch my interest, and depending on how well the graphics are put together. Mapping is a key factor as well.

And the story, plus music will get me hooked! :D
Good soundtrack. I DO LIKE overused final fantasy songs, BUT if used properly. Also, interesting is to apply music not based in place (cave 1 theme, cave 2 theme, town theme...) but based on the situation. Like a city having the returners song (FF6) If you´re doing a job and can´t be seen at all, you know where i´m trying to come.

ALSO... Something i absolutely LOVE in RPG´s, and is better than disneyland, is to have EVERY LITTLE GRAIN OF DUST in your game checkable. So you can check the TV and say "What´s this, now? This television is from the 80´.. Amazing it is still intact."
AND, if you use VX/XP, use the self stwitches to make the first message complex and the second shorter. "What´s this, now? This television is from the 80´.. Amazing it is still intact.". Check again and it says: "An old TV."

While usng this technique, you can also do things like...

"A closet... Let me check..."
"Empty..."
"Wait... The bottom.."
"You found "

Oh, and, yeah, LOOT is good too.. It makes more sense gigant carniivorous plants giving you petals instead of money. And you can use it for a recipe, or sell ;)

Well... My thoughts.

Off Topic: This seems to be a bustling community, eh? I like here^^
I like a custom soundtrack in games I play. Who's with me when I say that nobody wants to hear FFVII's battle theme again?
Yay, that´s what i mean, when i say: "BUT if used properly".. By overused, i do not mean "the most well known battle theme that everybody heard of" theme. I mean, Who wants to hear FFX´s battle theme again? Or FFVI? I do. But NOT FFVII. I´ts too overused, i think Some FF songs still lie in shadows...

Oh, a game that uses a lot of the description THINGY is Parasite Eve 2. (Ok, commercial.. Who cares? Just use as an example.)

A good horror RPG for 2k3 is "Taut" And , for the most part, there are no monsters, just pure suspense... It´s so.. Good..
Normally the most scary ones are the ones where there are no monsters to break up the atmosphere of the game. You begin to feel lonely and that's what is scary.
I always though that 'The Longing Ribbon' was a pretty good RM scare-fest.

I also like games that have strong female characters. I prefer a strong female to the over-used weak, white mage/summoner deal, though points if they're a male. ^.^ Even better if the main character is female.

This reminded me of a game I completed a while back.

WARNING: COMPLETELY SHAMELESS PLUG APPROACHING AT HIGH VELOCITIES!

Gyah. Well, it really depends on what kind of game I'm in the mood to play when I'm looking for one, really. I really like light-hearted games, where there's sort of a cliche storyline but the characters are interesting, perky, and just fun to see in action. That, and it doesn't take its self too seriously.

And in some other games, I really like to have a dark, well thought out storyline with deep and intriguing characters. You know, something riddled with twists, turns, secrets, etc.

Oi! And it has to be fun!
