WHY IS RPG MAKER STUCK IN THE 20TH CENTURY, GRAPHICS-WISE?

tldr: 3D is more complicated than 2D

This sums up basically all 19 replies so far.
It's also from a marketing perspective a terrible choice. There already exist a lot more superior 3D game dev kits such a Torque, XNL and such that to release a 3D style RPG Maker which in reality doesn't have as much power as those makers no "serious" game developers would buy it as they can get a more comprehensive engine already, and hobbyists wouldn't buy it either as it would seem far too complicated to them.
Visually, I think a lot of it has to do with simply the amount of material available. With a two-dimensional setup, and especially considering the plethora of console (SNES and PSX) games with roughly the same resolution, the availability is high and limitations are nearly endless. If you consider custom work, even a person with limited artistic prowess can come up with at least something, but the same does not hold true when you enter the realm of 3D.

Like Dark Gaia and others said, the process becomes exponentially more complex once that bridge is crossed-- and therefore less accessible to the average user. Very few of us actually have competence with advanced mechanics or model/texture-rendering.

Plus, the existing engines and Entertain software have had generally positive responses... not exactly prompting any radical interface changes.

Well my entire question was based on a gross oversimplification, if you want to get down to it. On some level, I just feel like...technology (being vague, I know) should pick up some of the slack, and make this possible.

I'm curious, who has tried the PS2 RPG Makers? They're 3d.

I used to have "RPG Maker 2" for PS2. The graphics were...okay, I suppose. But the events planning and difficulty in making a game is much higher than RM2K/3/XP/VX. So difficult, in fact, that I couldn't use it. Which is why I sold that mutha eff'er! ^_^

The reason is because 3D graphics are garbage okay that was not an entirely reasonable assertion let me elaborate

Like having POLYGOSN doesnt mean "increased technology super good ++ better games" it is just another visual medium

like you would never say CHARCOAL IS AN UPGRADE FROM PENCIL IT IS JUST BETTER TECHNOLOGY/BETTER PICTURES

if someone had the resources they could make a game that looks like legend of mana in rmxp or maybe even vx but i am not sure if rm2k can display enough colors for that to be possible how is that for TECH UPGRADES

i dont think enterbrain needs to implement that specific medium (polygon) for it is be considered viable/current technology

Not mine - mine was "tldr; 3D sucks".

I don't think 3D graphics are innately superior to 2D graphics, because the STYLE factor is worth A LOT, you're right. But it would be nice to have the option.

I do have RPG Maker 2 & 3 for Ps2. It scares me to use Rpg Maker 2 because it makes it sound like it is gonna explode my Ps2. X_x

RM2 is more flexible and probably better to use than RM3 because so far from what I used RM3 is strictly to must use to the default(which looks really stupid...). Also, trying to use it any of the two is a pain in the ass. <_<;;

^Off-Topic(maybe?) but I saw someone mention the Makers for Ps2. However, I was not turned off by how the graphics looked.

The majority of people using the newest rpgmaker think that copy/pasting a side view battle script makes the difference between whether a game is good or bad. Modeling? Vector math? I don't think so.
Not that they have much of a choice. RMVX's default is the first thing I've ever seen SUCK and BLOW at the very same time.

They could choose to learn Ruby instead of being cunts.

Fo' sho. I taught myself how to manipulate RGSS2 and, uh, hey! Guess what? A few people like my game and the modifications I can make, and I rest easy knowing that my skills* - they're better than yours.

*actually karsuman designs all my skills I just angstily** make them work

**this is not a word

EDIT: Ironically, I am choosing to make the graphics in my new game as simple as possible. Going backwards for the win.
This shocked me to. My production speed shot WAYYYY up when I scaled back my graphical complexity.

Graphics are such time whores.

I hate fancy graphics. I think the world would be better off without fancy graphics. Viva RPG Maker! Fight the power.

Substance: I'm not sure how much harder 3D vectoring would be compared to 2D pixelling, actually. Theory is much more important in vectoring I'd presume so you probably wouldn't need as much artistic talent to make simple 3D models? idk.

So what I am to trying to ask is...why has enterbrain fallen behind? In this era of ludicrously hi-def 3D graphics, why can't we at least make games that look like, say, FFVII?

Why would anyone want to make a game that looks like FF7? If Enterbrain made it the default, then that would be horrible. It wouldn't be bad if it was optional, but 2D graphics are a hundred times more beautiful than anything on the PSOne. Even Final Fantasy V looks better than Final Fantasy VII based on charm.

Gosh, could you imagine it.

This is highly specious and subjective and it is pretty lame that you stated your opinion like a fact.

That's because it is a fact. FF7 looks like garbage. Cloud is like this ugly walking polygonal bitch and is way way way too far away from the "camera" the whole game. I'd take snes RPG graphics over that shit any day.

In any case, your post is hilariously ironic.

I don't see the irony please explain it to me. I hope no one (except, I guess, Cop Killa?) thinks that I am trying to make a point or a statement with this topic. I was actually just trying to open a dialogue on what I thought was an interesting subject.
maybe you are imagining an entire playstation series
