WHY IS RPG MAKER STUCK IN THE 20TH CENTURY, GRAPHICS-WISE?
Posts
Yeah, but it loses all of its sheen when anybody can just pick it up and use it to make a crappy game or a great-looking game that never gets finished.
If you have the motivation and talent to make a good game, an extra set of textures and some 3D math knowledge won't kill you.

I agree that learning new skills never hurt anyone. that said i think that the maker series is more aimed at newbies to game development a sort of kiddie pool for them to splash around in before stepping up to the Olympic sized pool that is the current game development scene.
not to forget that the bigger/more flashy a game is the more effort/time/money has to go into it. like others have said game dev budgets are rather out of control (much like the time it takes to make a game these days) but it's only because gamers keep demanding more and more realistic games. which always makes me laugh since the point of a game is to get people away from reality.
this is also why indie games for the most part use older graphics and gameplay styles. it's easier to do on a smaller scale. just look at games like super meat boy. not saying all indie games are 2D based (just look at how minecraft started) but a majority of them are because it's easier for all involved.

oh my apologies didn't mean to necro. just seen a topic that i had a interest in. I will try to keep dates of topics in mind next time.
...in a way, that fact that the topic is 5 years old, makes it even more up-to-date, since even the latest RPGmaker didn't really improve graphics wise... : P
Still doesn't matter, though. The answer is because they, like the doggie in my avatar, are charming as fuck. ^.^
