SMT: DEVIL SURVIVOR

So you're in the middle of Shibuya when all of a sudden you get a message on your handheld device. It says "Let's Survive!" Suddenly you are attacked by demons, and you realize that you must band together with your friends in order to make it through seven days in one piece. Except this won't be easy. There is no difficulty slider, the music consists of wild guitar riffs rather than catchy pop songs and unless you prioritize your time very carefully, it is very likely that people close to you are going to die.

If The World Ends With You were mashed in a blender with Persona 4 and Final Fantasy Tactics, and seasoned with Lord of the Flies, it would probably be something like:

So yeah, it's a turn-based strategy game for the DS, under the Shin Megami Tensei game label. It looks fairly awesome (read the reviews!) and it comes out on Friday.

Special features of note include:

-Buying demons on an online auctioning site
-The ability to look up demons in your compendium and find exact lists of fusions instead of using chance or strategy guides
-A time-management system sort of, but not entirely, like the system in Persona 4, except spread out over 7 days
-The ability to see exactly how many days a party member has left to live, and the ability to choose whether or not to save them
-Multiple endings!
I still have to finish Persona 4 and Devil Summoner 2. :-\

Sounds awesome of course.

I mean, it's SMT.

Yeah.
Yeah it sounds awesome on paper especially with the hybrid battle system. I saw the trailer and notice the personas from Persona 4 so that's caught my attention (I've never played a SMT game prior to that).

This game's better than I thought.

Haven't gotten that far yet, though.

There's a typo in your topic title it should read "The World Ends With You"

EDIT: Sorry I'm a fan of tasteless jokes

Yeah, when I wrote the first post to this topic I actually considered replacing the Devil Survivor box art with World Ends With You box art as a joke, but then decided that having both would be a waste of space.

To be fair, the Shin Megami Tensei series pioneered this sort of thing years before The World Ends With You came out. As far as I know, just about every game in the Shin Megami Tensei series combines urban life with supernatural conspiracies, so Devil Survivor isn't so different in that regard.

Am I the only person in the world who found TWEWY extremely disappointing and just plain bad?

Nope! Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation didn't like it much either. As did a bunch of other people on GameFAQs. Also I have a feeling that Tim Rodgers probably hates it, though he hasn't reviewed it yet.

I thought it was the best thing to happen to JRPGs in years, even though it was sort of a Frankenstein's Monster of a videogame.

Yahtzee is hardly a fan of JRPGs so his disdain for the game isn't surprising.

I didn't like TWEWY that much either but mainly because the music got on my nerves. The battle system was great but I never really had the motivation to play through the whole game on whatever difficulty you needed to just to get added plot in the form of...words...IIRC. Plus Lightning Rook was broken. ;(

SMT may have come before TWEWY but when you see storylines like this

sort of. i wasn't exactly expecting much in the first place so it was more extreme vindication than disappointment

this seems like the right time to say that SMT is pretty much the sum of my jrpg / video gam music hatred. fucking atlus
This is a really great game. The battle system is like a weird hybrid of strategy and traditional RPG, which sounds ridiculous, but it's incredibly fun.

That little blurb does not do justice to the story.
First, I don't remember getting any message .Second, you receive your COMPs only a few minutes into the game and by activating it you summon demons, who, after a brief battle, form your first contracts. Third, Tokyo (part of it? I'm not familiar with the layout of this city) is under lockdown and no one really knows why; people aren't aware of the presence of demons. They all think it's a terrorist attack and patiently await for the police to resolve it.

There are also a few cool ideas like e-mails predicting what'll happen (it's up to you to make sure it doesn't, as they are pretty much all genocides); numbers above people's heads (???), and more. You also have different routes for the last day, you can, among others, become the King of Demons, the Messiah, or simply escape the lockdown. There's New Game+ of course, and an optional super boss.

All in all the story's surprisingly solid. I'd say it's on par with Persona 2 and feels like reimagining of SMT 1. You never know what's really going on until the last day, and you slowly uncover the truth piece by piece. It's linear, but your decisions affect some things, like whether minor characters live or die, and, most importantly, what routes become available.

It's one of the few DS games I truly recommend.
I'm guessing you finished it so can you mess up the game if you play without a guide? Branched endings put me off a little as there's always a "true" ending which requires you to check FAQs out.

This is SMT, there's no "true" ending, only the one you think best suits your feelings (or which you think is the most fun).

You can't mess up, but based on with whom you talk with and your responses you'll be given a different number of routes to choose from. I believe it's possible to get them all in one playthrough.

I'm just starting this today. Anyone got any tips/ pointers for starting out?

Experiment to find weaknesses, fast. It's a Shin Megami Tensei. Weaknesses are life and death.

Get used to fusing your favorite demons and transfer only the most useful skills (never discard Pierce!).

Never use demons 10 levels lower than the hero's.

If you find yourself with more than 1 skill to crack from 1 enemy in a story battle, choose wisely. Try to get all support skills (those used automatically at the start of each turn) and all "anti" skills. Damage skills are easy to get in "free battles".

Pump Magic and Agility for your main character, and on day 6 or 7 add Vitality and Strength (for various Drains and Repels). Atsuro is good enough for a melee monster, and you don't need two of those.

They aren't that important, but they are worth taking advantage of when fighting tough enemies. Also, it tells you enemies' elemental resistances right off the bat so you won't need to do any trial and error.
EDIT: Whoa. I'm on Day 3, and I have only 2 things available to me right now: a free battle and a fight with some zealots. Both are really fucking hard. I was having a pretty easy time with this game, but all of a sudden I'm taking tons of damage and doing practically none in return. I can still kill enemies, but I can't win either battle, so I'll just have to do some hit and run grinding in the free battle.
I just finished up my 2nd playthrough.. def the best DS RPG title I've played and totally took care of the strat rpg fix I was looking for you.

The following is fact:

The enemy team will rape you with a sandpaper condom. No lube. Which some "uber hardcore" may enjoy, in reality it blows.

If you're anti grinder and on your first play-through here's what I recommend. Do the free battle with ONLY the MC and build up his levels equal to the enemy. Just take out one leader, hit retreat, then repeat. Woah that was catchy. Doing so will raise the fuse cap so you can actually get companions equal to who you are fighting. Unfortunately, the game takes away exp if your level is higher than the enemies keeping challenge and preventing one character being too strong.

I didn't figure this out till half way through the game but take advantage the suspend save feature. It doesn't kick you to the main menu or delete when you load. This way if you get totally screwed with a stone/ instant death just reload. Kind of a bitch move but good to know when you're not in the mood to repeat 30 mins of battling over a cheapshot like that.

If those zealots are giving you trouble wait for Beldr hahaha
