DRAGON QUEST IX

I've decided that I don't feel like waiting until May 19th, 2010 to play DQ9, so what should I be aware of, like any thing different from a DQ game, other than touch encounters (which began to show up in DQ8 already with certain monsters) and class changes (DQ3, 6, 7)?
I'm sort of unsure of your question. What else is different besides touch encounters and class changes? As you said, class changes aren't new. Touch encounters are there, and they work very very well. Because the battles are simple and easy, I'm running into enemies instead of avoiding them. Because it's a portable game, having to hit A repeatedly for simple enemies doesn't seem like a chore, it's just time to look out the window to check if your bus stop has passed yet.

The world map is in between VII and VIII. There's an annoying fairy who speaks and looks like a gyaru.

I'm also not sure where you pulled that release date from, and what you plan on doing instead of waiting.
Dragon Quest IX has to be released in North America after April 30, 2010, as SE has no plans to release it this fiscal year. May 19 was just a guess, though I have seen May 5, 2010 thrown around as a placeholder date.

What's a gyaru?
It's a type of person and a fashion. Type the word into google images and you'll see. It's the easiest way to understand.

So far, it's my favourite Dragon Quest yet.
Wait, I never used them in Wild Arms, I must've been older.
