FORCING RROD?
Posts
So, two days ago my XBox showed the dreaded red rings of death, but after turning it off for twenty minutes, it worked fine for five minutes, then the textures on all the 3D models started to glitch out - to the point where all games are unplayable.
I called Microsoft support but they said that unless the three red rings came back, permanently, they'd charge me £70 to repair it - but if the red rings come back on a permanent basis, they'll fix it for free. Fuckers.
Anyway, short version of the story, I'm trying to force red ring my 360. It's under a towel and turned on, blew a hairdryer in there for a good ten minutes or so to really heat the fucker up and it's still surviving! Gonna leave it overnight and see what happens.
Anyone got any other tips? And please don't say "put it in a microwave" like some douche on my MSN list XD

I'd open it up and unplug the fans. Then after it screws up, plug it back in.
or...
Put it in the microwave with the hairdryer and a towel :P.
E: but then again, opening it up might violate the terms of agreement.

Make sure the towel is covering all openings to prevent airflow and play fancy 3d games with lots of filters or big draw distances. Keep it running for as long as it takes to ring. Keep at it and it'll happen. The GPU is already on the fritz if it is fucking up with textures.
Paint the ring red. Or you could send it in and hope the people who will work on it are color blind.
When a console RRoDs microsoft changes the heatsink setup and sometimes changes the chips. They more than likely will not change out your dvd drive because that failing is not a contributing factor for the RRoD. And... Well if more damage is done to your X-box. You are pretty much fucked.
Unless they have an already refurbished Xbox, then they will send it to you.

I left it on all night, under two towels, runnings Gears 2, it just showed two red rings about ten minutes ago. Turned it off, unplugged everything, booted it up again and now the graphics are perfect again - no issues with the textures at all!
It's one hell of a weird machine, but I might hafta upgrade to an Elite soon. Had it since November 07, soon MS won't even cover three red rings on my console.

2 rings. And yeah, Fallout 3 woulda worked better but I was worried about damaging the disc. Fallout 3 > Gears 2.
The 360's running fine for now, but I wonder how long it's gonna last before it properly red rings.

2 rings is an overheating problem you big dunce, just keep it dust-free and make sure it's in a well-ventilated area without shit covering the air vents.
I would NOT DO THIS. It voids your warranty, and those sneaky fuckers at Microsoft know how to read the internet, because, like Al Gore, they invented it.
BTW, 3-Lights is the harmless fakeout one, right?
BTW Fallout 3 and Oblivion occasionally just FUCK UP SYSTEMS ON THEIR OWN (I have extensive personal experience with this horrible phenonemon) so if you really want to RROD, just keep playing those games for several hours at a time with no breaks in between and you can get there without obviously voiding your warranty.

3 lights is the horrible YOU ARE DEAD one. 4 lights is harmless fakeout 'you don't have an AV cable plugged in' one.
Oh....shit. I've already had one system RROD and one before that one get stolen. On my third console now and it was giving me three red rings (all but upper right) but the weird thing is, when I jiggered one of the cables it stopped...also it kept doing it even whent he system was clearly off (like,a red light but no green lights) but again jiggering the cables made it stop. Maybe it was four rings, I was panicking too hard to really notice, but it seemed to be nothing.
I am like, too scared to find out for sure. : / The thought of having to shell out for a FOURTH GODAMN XBOX is pretty terrifying.

That's not a fair comparison, because any technology built before 1990 can withstand a direct nuclear strike. When I was a kid I could have tossed my Game Boy from the top of an apartment building and it would have still worked.
I'm not sure how that's not a fair comparison. You build a system back then, it's reliable. You build a system now, it breaks down because nobody cares about the quality of the product so therefore they will make it as crappy as possible, as long as it works for awhile so they can make more money. It's the same story with cars, and everything really.

Yep. I have a lamp that was made about sixty years ago, and in all that time, the light bulb has never been replaced. Stuff made in the future is a waste of money.

You missed my point entirely.
Planned obsolescence makes me wonder how the world could handle another Depression like in the 1930s. IF something broke down or wore out in those days, they could patch it up/fix it to get by.
This global downturn/depression (note the lowercase d) isn't even a year old, and people are having to trade in their three year-old "clunkers" to the auto companies just to get another car/truck that will do the same thing in 2012 (if not sooner). Speaking of which, I wonder what message it will send when people show up with their 2006 and 2007 model year vehicles to the places trading them in?
It seems our consoles are the next logical step. Nintendo needs to stop making consoles that last for years, and get with the program! I'd guess PS3s break down too, or they would, if they were actually used very much (LOL no games).
