ACTION RPGS

Well, kindergarten stats aside, I still think it is an adventure game and not an RPG. The core gameplay element in RPGs is battles (and preparation for them), while in Zelda games its usually the puzzles (even the bosses are "puzzles").
There's a very very nice action RPG called Memories of Mana (I dunno if it has anything to do with Secret of Mana, it may have) but the only "bad" thing is that it was made by brazilian people and it's in portuguese.

I'm from portugal so that's not a problem for me, but I realy feel that this game should be translated into english. It's a realy nice game, one of the best RM games I played, with a good sense of humor, balance and gameplay features, and it would be very nice if the whole world could enjoy it.

If anyone knows who made it and wants to try to convince them to translate it...

Zelda has invisible stats. You know how much 'damage' you do in relation to enemies, and how much Health you have. Enemies do a set amount of damage (1/2 heart, 1 heart, etc) which equates to their attack power.

Your sword usually does more damage as it's upgraded; 1, 2, and 3, with the "shot" being 1 damage at all times.

You have a magic meter which depletes and is refilled, etc. You have a limited carrying capacity for most weapons that you can increase over time as well.

I'd say Zelda has plenty of stats, they just aren't all "Strength" and "Agility" like most other RPGs, and aren't listed in a stat-page, instead they're ones you see or know through play, much better than you know the STR stat for your characters in a standard RPG. :)

I'd consider an "Action" RPG just be one that isn't turn-based. I would still consider ATB to be turn-based, heck it is usually called "Active Turn Battle."

Using that logic, you could say that all games have stats (i.e. numbers that change) and so are a hybrid with RPGs. (such as getting better guns in an FPS, or a faster car's top speed 'stat')

I don't consider Zelda as being an Action RPG, but arguing over genres that will never be clearly defined is pointless.
I believe Action RPGs mean no transition to a battle event... just a normal hack and slash (i.e. Secret of Mana) while still keeping stats into play. Regular RPGs on the other hand usually transition into a battle scene (i.e. Final Fantasy).

At least that's what I think.
You guys are forgetting Diablo and Neverwinter Nights. Japan isn't the only country that makes RPGs

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

Diablo is most certainly an Action RPG.

Also, Baldur's Gate is being consistantly mentioned in this thread.

In fact, most Western RPGs are ARPG style - Bard's Tale, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, etc.
I don't know if anyone else played it but Nox was one. Would Elder Scrolls be considered one?
