HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR WORLD MAP?

Different games call for different designs. I'm making a series of interconnected areas (Zelda-ish) with some warping opportunities, but I do enjoy a good world map.
The system used in Final Fantasy X and Grandia 2 would be my second favourite - you can't quite see the whole world but you do have to go through each area specifically before you unlock the next one.

The world map in FFX was the whole world; Spira only has two (or one and a half, whatever) continents.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, though :(
yeah pretty sure he means you don't walk in every single area on the world map but you do have to go through each area to get to the one adjacent to it
I think I like all types of maps... Zelda (no world map), Pokémon (no world map except for flying), Final Fantasy (traditional), giant worlds like computer games... I don't dislike any of them, and they do work well.

But it's definitely a game aspect that could use some inovation.
I like big freakin maps. Kinda like FFXII. Really heightens the "adventure" aspect for me. But I think the way the Pokemon/Zelda maps are done is just amazing. You're actually traversing through the whole world, as opposed to just going to the places that are muy importante.
DRAGON QUEST VIII. That is all.

Amen to the zelda-style. I love exploring worlds, and too many games look great to look at -- but lack the ability to delve into them! Though, later zeldas fall into that catagory too.

ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE A WORLD MAP... Different continents shown and a bit of detail for shores, rocky places, mountains, etc.

I prefer a series of large, interconnected areas (I.E. Final Fantasy XII) with some sort of "warp map". I don't mind world maps in games with an old school theme, but I tend to find them awkward in modern of futuristic settings.

I really like how FF12 did the map, it was huge, right, and you explored it... so you got a real feel for where you are, and what's the area looks like.
There's a solid sense of your location on the map...
Whereas in FF13 it looks visually beautiful... but there's no real sense of where you are! (at least I found this) it got to be this beautiful area that just connected to the last area, and gave me no real idea of where I was. Maybe later in the game this becomes clear...? FF12 just did a better job in this respect imo.

On the flipside, I'm paying attention to town art in FFT on this playthrough, and it gives a pretty good picture of the world without much more than a dot on the map. I can talk myself in circles on this subject.

Yessssss. Too bad we'll probably never see this in a non-commercial game.
