HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR HERO?
Posts
I don't know if this has been discussed much but I'm a little curious as to what type of hero you guys prefer?
The silent protagonist?... Where his fellow members carry out the conversations and story or one that has his own opinion? Or maybe you prefer a hero who has amnesia or lost his memory and has no clue who he is until the story unfolds? Maybe the less heroic type?
Truthfully, I prefer the heroic "save the world" type hero. But that's just me.

Medium-Rare.
Actually, I prefer a hero that blends into the crowd, one who actually acknowledges his presence and those around him. I prefer a somewhat realistic hero that has a special important to the plot over the Marty Stu silent protagonist. He could a hero or an anti-hero, but one thing is for sure, he has his purpose, so he must fulfill it, even if it brings certain costs. In other words, my ideal hero is the party member who is central to the plot, like Alex from Lunar, Chaz from Phantasy Star 4, or Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, to give popular examples.
Now that I think of it, as a hint on my latest project, the amnesic hero may play an important role...

I usually most of the time would prefer a hero with a different set of tastes, or one that has a bit more backbone in him or her.
In most RPG's that I have played throughout my life, I end up ditching the main hero and replacing him or her in my party with someone more to my liking. It's because a lot of them are the usual sappy, goodie goodie guy that wants to save the world, or protect something dear to him. And that's okay! I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but personality wise, it's just not doing it for me. I want something with a bit of attitude.
Probably a perfect example of this is Yuri from Tales Of Vesperia. Usually most of the Tales main heroes I end up switching out sometime during the game (unless you really need them like Lloyd) but Yuri was different. He was a total badass, and although he cared, it just to me...didn't seem like it. And that's what I want, someone with a backbone, someone with attitude.
That's my favourite hero. That or an incredibly sexy hot chick leading the charge! :)

Attractive, preferably with recessive hair color genes, with some sort of healing power but mostly a tank (muscles!). I dislike Vaan but I like Gordon Freeman and the hero of Lost Odyssey.
To be honest, my favorite character usually isn't the lead - at least in terms of hotness (which is what matters). I fight with Guy but not Luke, Ziggy but not Shion, Balthier and Basch but not Vaan, Kanji but not Yosuke (equivalent of lead that can be switched), Sabin but not Terra, GEORG/Belcoot/Killey/Mathaias/ZEGAI but not HeroV (caps for the hottest vg charz ever thanxbai).

My hero is a mix of every cliche in the book.
He wakes up after being gone for 5 years, and doesn't remember ever leaving.
(amnesiac)
He is young. (stereotypical JRPG fare)
He's a Swordsman, who travels with his best friend, a Curate. (Also cliche)
And he must find the five Godrelics to seal away Kayos, the elemental spirit of death. (how much more cliche can you get?)
If you are looking for something that harkens back to older RPG quests, yet still has many real-life pop-culture references, (The revive item is "Mountain Perspiration"..
Its description is, "The normally fatal dose of caffeine in this drink is enough to revive the dead."), Then check out my games demo! It's updated every few days, so, keep that in mind.

I like to pick my own heroes through dialogue choices and actions. (Which usually means the hero is a goodhearted man/woman that helps old ladies cross the street while trying to maintain a tough exterior and failing miserably.)
If I can't pick my own hero then I don't really mind as long as the character is well-written. I almost prefer snarky self-aware characters. The more I laugh the better, though that is probably because any attempts at going serious usually means you'll laugh anyway.
Most of all I want my hero not to be dumb. But good guys usually are. (This is why villains are so much better)

In my last major project, the protagonist was the polar opposite of a hero. He was a perpetual screw-up who couldn't catch a break, and had a knack for pissing people off with his incompetence. Just like me!
Pet peeve for any RPG, commercial or indie: Situations in which your hero is forced to say yes to accept a quest.
i.e. Message: Will you accept this quest?
Label 1
Show Choices: Yes/No
-Yes- Handler
Message: Great, good to have you on board.
-No- Handler
Message: C'mon, please?
Jump to Label 1
Blank slate heroes where your answer actually matters and changes the outcome make sense in this case. If you're being forced to say yes in situations like these, I would much, much rather have a hero with a personality and a backstory and reason for saying yes.
Maybe a bit tangential, but related to the situations in which I prefer hero types.

I love these things! Nostalgia FTW.
Rhue from the Way is probably my favourite protagonist from any RPG, simply because he had a set goal from the beginning, did everything he could to achieve that goal, and persevered until the final episode.
The ONLY hero I want is a yellow spiky haired boy with a large sword and that doesn't care about the world, only is in it for the money.
But seriously, I like heros that are interesting, and not RPG archetypes. Sure I don't mind if they have some aspects of one, but I'd prefer them to feel like real people more than RPG character types. I also like female leads but I'm fine playing as a male character. I don't really like when the villain is actually smart, but the heros win only because they outnumber the villain and have ULTIMATE WEAPONS/SUMMONS, not because they do any strategic planning or anything (I mean the in game versions, not referring to players own strategies in battle). I wish they'd do more of that, outsmarting the villain rather than overpowering them. I like silly characters too, but usually the comic relief characters end up being useless and annoying rather than actually fun to have around from what I've seen.
Hero, anti-hero, I've had both, I'll like either if they're well written. I like it when the character is nice, but in a realistic way. Not going around paying off everyones debts to raise light side points and acting like a saint, but one who is nice and isn't stupid about it. No preaching to the enemies that violence is bad, when the whole game that's what the characters have been doing. Or taking a 30 minute cutscene feeling sorry for the evil character they killed. Sword of Mana, I'm looking at you.
This is why I don't really like the Good/Evil path games: I'd like the choices, but there are choices you'd like to use that aren't present, and they nearly always want to force you to either side just for the rewards. Instead of choosing what you want to say because that's what you'd want to say, you just pick the option you know will give you points to the side you want. So you can't get a evil character that seems nice to the world but is manipulative, you have to be pure evil and destroy everything and be mean to everyone for you to get those points.

Mercenary without any empathy who goes against the entire world alone without even being able to cast any magic. That's about it.

I agree, it's stupid. What's the point of giving the player a choice when saying NO isn't going to really do anything?

-1 Stability
Heard a rumor that in EU2 there was the same event but only with one option. People complained about the lack of choices so the guy in charge added the second option to the event for EU3.
Anyways, silent heros suck. They are always completely uninteresting at best and if possible I always change 'em out for a more interesting crew. All the 'immerse the player' or 'the protagonist IS the player' never works on me after too many times when I thought "this is fucking stupid why are we doing this?" moments in games. At least if the protagonist is a seperate character its just a case of the party being a bunch of idiots.
