SPARTAN COSPLAY PROGRESS
Posts
Now working on the right arm, then it's onto the leg sections and boots before I strengthen it, reinforce it, and paint it. Oh, and fit a visor.
What do you think?
Here's my housemate's progress, he's currently ahead of me by one bicep XD Being a bastard he has to make all his pep in green *rolls eyes*
Oh, and seeing as we're going as red and blue I redrew our multiplayer emblem in PhotoShop to make a stencil from so we can spray it onto our armour later.
This is just a small .gif preview but the one we're actually using is at 300dpi and takes up half an A4 page.

This is so nerdy it's insanely awesome.
Nice work, by the way. This is fiberglass, right?

It's cardstock base, and we're gonna fiberglass it next. Once it's fiberglassed we're gonna sand it to smooth it out and then paint it.
I thought it was a spartan soldier re-enactment kind of thing at first and I thought it sounded cool.
I am disappointed.

I thought you meant the other kind of Spartan and that this would be a fitness blog:
But that is pretty cool! How are you going to make it shiny? (like metal)

Many automobiles make use of fiberglass bodies that are light, fairly durable (assuming you don't go careening into things) and look, for all intents and purposes, like a metal body when polished and painted. ;)
This looks awesome, and I can't wait to see the finished product. I'm a sucker for any kind of complex DIY cosplaying, or anything extensive-build-related. Grew up with a dad in the car business (built/designed his own damn sportscars. What a guy) so I know a decent amount about the stuff you're working with. What are you looking to make the visor out of? And what are you considering weapons-wise? Some DIY nades could be pretty sweet.
Currently working on the Assault Rifle, again making the base from cardstock. For the visor we were thinking of buying visors intended for use in bike helmets. At the moment we've been considering the ones that go into downhill moutain biking helmets. We figured gold tinted motorcycle visors would be too expensive and might be slightly too bulky to be easily fitted. To do the pattern on the front of the visor, we were looking at getting a tinted sheet of film or accetate or something we can easily cut and stick to a gold tinted visor to give the effect of a dual layer visor without having to buy two visors and chop into one.
The spare ammo clip's finished, and the gun itself is in two halfs ATM. The front end is done, the grip is half done, the ammo counter was an absolute bitch XD

Rifle's looking good! You can probably work out some of the wonky-ness when you go to fiberglass. Is the ammo counter going to display actual numbers, even if fixed (ie because it doesn't fire)? If this is the case, get a 24 hour digital clock, set the time to 13:37, and use that for great justice. Actually, just a clock as the ammo counter might not be a bad idea.
And nice to see you reppin' the Dreamcast there...

Fitting an LED with an actual display would be a little extreme. I was thinking of just painting it black, maybe making a stencil of the numbers to paint on at most.
Now finishing off the final pieces of the armour, got some fiberglass today, gonna start glassing these up ready for painting next week. Watch this thread for pics.
It's for wearing to the MCM Expo in London this October.
Finally got around to resining! Literally just came in from the first round after a rather ominous black cloud started to hover overhead.
Time for pics methinks.
Remember, always do this in a well ventilated area, wear gloves, and wear a respirator.
The pieces begin to gather.
More pieces left to dry.
Remember your supplies!
We're gonna get the helmets glassed ASAP =)
