HOW TO SUCCEED

Never use the same tile for three tiles in a row. That's the BS. If you have a cliff wall, bend it. If you have a house, add a random room. If you have empty space, plop down a barrel.
We should just ban barrels on RMN

At this point two things will happen; one, you will understand the enormity of the project you yourself have laid ahead of you (and realise just how much time you need to dedicate to this labour of love in order to make it work)
Well if you get discouraged at this point then that just teaches you not to bite off more than you can chew. :P
Sovan saves the thread!
I'd listen to that guy. That's an excerpt straight from, "Chicken Soup for the Amateur Game Developer's Soul."
Hide them where Enix did. ANYWHERE ON ANY TRAVERSABLE TILE WITH NO RHYME OR REASON EVEN ON A SINGLE WATER TILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN.

b..b..but then where would I hide Tiny Medals? ;o;

Roffelbiscuits. It's so true. A built in "feature" to force one to purchase a strategy guide.

Not really. It just depends on the person's mindset.
Mindsets don't matter. You're not going to finish a 50-hour epic.

A lot of people do.

Also wait what
I said FIFTY HOURS
I am making fun of people who are like 600 CHARACTERS 2135 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY

As SJ said, writing down everything is wise. I frequently write down a lot of shit (mostly in school) about my game detailing the NPCs, the puzzles, pixelgraphic designs, map layouts, story, concept art, extra DBS mechanics etc. I don't do any smart calculations or anything, I just write as if I'm explaining someone my entirety of the ideas. An idea on paper is always better than an idea stuck somewhere in the back of your mind. Because you can easily spot holes easier when it's explained in language. Imagination can sometimes make your ideas SEEM brilliantly executed, but that is a huge flaw if you try to "go with the flow" too much.

The 3-tile rule.
However many tiles a guy says he's used, divide it by three. However many tiles a woman says she's used, multiply it by three.
The 3-tile rule is don't use the same tile after 3x in a row and add a variety, of course rules are meant to be broken 83
I am sick of the 3-tile rule getting flak all the time. It's an excellent vague guideline for inexperience mappers to stick to for areas that are supposed to be natural. Of course there are exceptions all the time and it's anything but a rule but it's a great place for people to start and be able to see difference between what a crummy square map looks like and one that attempts to appeal more to the eye.
When you are an RM2k3 MAPPING EXPERT like me you can reference more difficult sources and use your own judgment to determine how many tiles looks bad, but APPROXIMATELY 3 is about right for people who clearly have no idea what a map in an RPG should look like and still need some time to learn.
Also if we ban barrels we should also ban crates so that literally 100% of my maps miss their major filling ingredient. We can hide tiny medals three tiles from the back-right corner of an obscure building that serves as the house of an NPC who mentions the weather. Obviously.

post=98640Craze has some deep-seated animosity toward map design because he is bad at it, I think. :[
Anything that involves maps.
