The other trend in RM games that has really bothered me is the clumsy and often borderline misogynistic portrayal of female love interests. It strains my ability to take a scene seriously when the first thing we learn about a character is how curvaceous she is. I have also seen many female characters interested in little else but their own cuteness. How many games have you played where the first comment about a character was how beautiful she is?

I consider this trend to be a very cheap and thoughtless way to artificially add appeal to a character. Does this bother anyone else? Why do you choose to characterize a woman this way? What is there to be gained? Or am I just crazy/a prude?

Discuss.

This character is also bisexual.

Well, I tackled this issue in a cutscene in my game. The hero communicates with a female through a device, like Metal Gear Solid. As opposed to seeing her face when you talk to her through the device, you simply see a pair of breasts. I do believe this is because male tend to develop the games. Males, especially male nerds, tend to be sexual in many ways.

This is amazing.

To be serious: this bit almost made me turn V&V off immediately because I felt it was so stupid.
I believe guys over-think writing dialogue for women. The tendency is to either jump right into the male/female dynamic by establishing that ever-necessary sexual tension, or to Mary Sue her into the object of unwavering desire.

To be fair, most games have a male/female dynamic for the purpose of establishing a romantic subplot, even commercial games (which are also guilty of oversexualization, obviously), so amateur RPG's are hardly the only offenders. That being said, there isn't a need to write non-stop flirtations or references to a female character's appeal. They should have normal conversations like any other character, but with the added depth of being able to relate to male characters in a way other male characters cannot (for the most part, I'm not gonna get into that any deeper).

With an audience like that, no wonder there's oversexualization of women. It's just sad when you see that trend transferred to RL.

I mean, imagine a really lame and ugly geek having super high standards for girls because of all the video games he played. Just sad.

I really haven't seen it in any RPG Maker games that I've played. Although there would be a ton of 16-bit sex in my game if I was a good spriter.
I first thought I wouldn't have much to say to this other than "yes that is how it is" and "yes it is probably a problem".

I will probably say "you" a lot or have general terms. What I really mean is "I" and that this applies to me. I just don't want to say it out loud.

I think one thing is in the creation aspect too. Although not really that overly sexualized games with "doll" aspects easily become sexualized. The biggest example is The Sims where you can easily spend far too much time making your Sim strangely alluring. (For me I've found myself spending far too much time in the Guitar Hero character editor trying to make as attractive a guitarist as possible).

Moving this into gamemaking. Making your game is a lot like doing the whole Doll thing. You have total control over your characters and it's hard resist the temptation of just making all those females very sexual. (Wish fulfillment!)

There's also the interactivity aspect. Though that is mostly when playing. The interactivity can make otherwise harmless things seem very sexual just because you are that kind of player (especially in 3d games oftentimes when bored you'll find yourself trying to look at women from more... "exposing" angles :))

So yeah. It's all about that stuff. This is mostly about male game creators. I don't really know how females do these things. It might be that their "wish-fulfillment" fantasies in creating stuff aren't the same (and may not seem as overly sexual to us casual male viewers)

See how I used second and third person just like I said I would in the beginning. But really all this is about me...
I understand the whole wish-fulfillment thing and sure, girls do it too. But the thing that bothers me about big breasted characters is that game developers don't leave it at that, they have to put them in compromising positions/situations and accent on the boobage every 20 message boxes. It's insulting to me as a female.

If you were curious, for girls (or for me in particular) it's more than enough to just have pretty characters our imaginations can work with.
Well, you want to make a character appealing, so naturally you make them pretty and it's no fun making an ugly, plain character in terms of designing. (This isn't 100% true of course, some are just so colorful despite their looks and what saves them is personality and crowning moment of awesome)
It isn't an issue with just females really, it's about being honest with your characters and not making up bullshit to make you care for them.

Most games do this, which sucks. They'll create a character who is downright evil, kills everything in sight, has huge muscular arms, but will try to make you care for them by creating a story about how his wife was murdered and he is seeking revenge. The same thing applies with females. You don't create a character who acts or looks seductive and try to cover it up with some serious cutscene that attempts to add depth to them.

See, at least this is honest, and you're not making stuff up to make her seem more than what she really is. I salute you...

So, by "pretty", you mean 5-year-old anime girls with eyes three times as big as their heads, and tits three times as big as their eyes? Gotcha.

I express no interest in tits since I'm a girl and I'm not associated with lolis unless it's Touhou or appropriate for the game situation :V

Go back to your cave
I never mentioned your sexuality.

Go back to your cave.
riight assuming what I said as if I'm some pedophile interested in 5 year old girls with big tits.
Also, go check WRPGs and the outfits of girls or boys, this isn't something that is JRPG only.

This is the last time I'm responding to you :)

I didn't assume that. I assumed that you were unaware of the sexual nature in JRPG's, and therefore mocked you for saying they wanted to make their characters "pretty." Also, everyone knows the Japanese are a particularly perverted society.

I guess you can't respond to me again since you're going back to your cave. *smile smile*
You're lame if people don't know what the hell you're "mocking" them about. Also, don't be a stereotyping ho.
