ANIME - YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE
Posts
Rei, I jussst want to mention that I absolutely LOVED Baccano and that you've totally inspired me to make my own anime list. :D
I highly recommend Makoto Shinkai short films, especially 5 Centimeters Per Second. Just watched them last night and it was like they took something from one of my personal journals and made it into an anime. Animation was incredibly high-quality, too, probably the best looking I've ever seen.I watched neko no shuukai just a minute ago and I really liked it. I'm definitely gonna watch this anime. :D
Yeah, I was actually recommended to Baccano by a friend of mine when I told the reasons why I liked Berserk. It took me forever before I got myself around watching Baccano, as it's sometimes with things you're recommended to. Isaac and Miria were pretty awesome characters, and Baccano has probably one of the best openings ever, too.
I also liked how the scriptwriter/director portrayed himself with Carol and Vice-director.

It's nice to see some appreciation for quality work. I'm not surprised sometimes when i hear anime bashing. I would have to say that I've seen or heard of a LOT of bad anime. There's been a few times I've forced myself to sit through a 12 episode one-season anime and been repulsed almost completely by the RIDICULOUS amount of harems, loli, unfinished plots, japan-only humour, and shitty anime-overtook-the-manga endings.
That being said, there have been some incredible shows - not even counting some of the good stuff from the 80's and early 90's. Trigun, Hellsing, Slayers, are probably my top three favourites, but if you really want to get into it, there's a HUGE number of anime that is just SUPERB. Scrapped Princess, Crono Crusade, Exile, Elfen Lied, Eureka Seven, Fullmetal Alchemist, Code Geass, Gurren Lagaan, Full Metal Panic - the list is ridiculously long. I wish I was actually a bigger fan and could give a better list, but my experience is limited. I have a list at least 20 long of anime's I have yet to watch that I've heard great things about.
Not even to get STARTED on movies, or ova's. For the bleak or trippy among us there's Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away (i still haven't seen it!). Origins: Spirits of the past (and it's inspiration, Nausicaa: valley of the winds) for the Apocalyptic types, AKIRA for god's sake... and on an on and on.
Usually, they just seem to have plots that... wouldn't be the same without the animation? I guess I'm trying to say, it has a certain Oomph that I find difficult to pin down.

also, as a side note - even though if you want to legitimately purchase anime and are a little turned off at the price (don't bother with the 4 episode releases, waste of money) - you are actually WAAAAY better off than the japanese. Series' there cost... far more. Like, hundreds of dollars. Seriously - even regular tv series cost a lot.
And why? because the companies know that their crazy fans will pay it. It's cheaper here because otherwise it just won't sell at all.

remind me to stay away from this topic
It's too late, you've turned into an anime.
I think the reason most people hate or consider anime a guilty pleasure is because there are 50+ new shows each season and 90% of it is all just pandering to shitty Japanese otaku culture. There is no artistic integrity at all and because it is very hard for studios to turn profits they just keep recycling one of three shitty formulas while trying to exponentially increase the boobies to plot ratio per episode
anime is dead
I haven't seen an anime worth watching since Gurren Lagann finished airing and that show was just pornography for mecha fans fyi
The only anime I can really enjoy is the Gundam serious (Wing and the old school Zeon ones), Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star. Anime has some interesting concepts, but there's just too much shit to wade through. They overdo it.

I wasn't arguing with you and I pretty much agree with everything you said. I am frankly repulsed by the gratuitous fanservice in most anime.
Then again I can count the number of anime I've seen on one hand.

Oh yes, the fanservice is quite repulsing but I actually never watch fanservicy anime. I know it's not my cup of tea. There's really a hell of a lot of genres and to be honest, it couldn't be easier to avoid it.

Just because most mainstream anime turns out to be total crap doesn't mean anime's dead. Just thought I'd say that.
I love a lot of the older animes but there are still a few good ones that are coming out. I recommend Code Geass to anyone that liked Death Note, the reason will be obvious if you watch it. Soul Eater was also pretty good. But Trigun will always be one my top favorites.
I suppose that last one is flcl?
anyway animu is for fags and god hates fags!!!!111one
on the subject; anime is a shitstorm like any other and has a few hidden pieces of corn but is generally not worth it due to you being covered in shit.

The only anime I think I've actually enjoyed was Hellsing. That was some cool shit.
