YOUR OPONION ABOUT "RTP GAMES"
Posts
I was just wondering, what is your opinion on RTP games?
When I say RTP games, I mean games using the default character sprites, tilesets, etc.
Are those games bad, because the maker doesn't put any effort into spriting or composing song,
or is it okay to use the default sprites if you have a good story and gameplay?

Another one to say yes, it's alright.
Also Yanfly makes RTP games but they're awesome as long as you have enough gameplay to keep the player interested it's ok :]

What about music from video games? Or is that illegal?
Just don't use the RTP music. After that as long as the game is good I am down for anything.

Using default sprite, tilesets and tunes could be considered a handicap, because running the game and seeing what they already saw a bazillion times could repulse some players. (Most players, I bet!) So you have to make an effort and go on playing to see what the game really worth...what too few people do, judging from the comments written in the "Full game" topics in some sites I won't name.
In fact, it depends on the way those elements are used. (stating the obvious.) Some of my fav games are made with cleverly used default elements.
I will just mention "Pokemon Hunter" because it's the only one that comes to my mind right now, but there are others. Play it, be it only throughout the first maze, and you will see what I mean. The sprites fit perfectly with the characters (or is it the contrary?), and Halibabica made awesome puzzles and mazes just with basic tilesets and a lot of imagination and creativity.
In the contrary, some games are completely customized, but absolutely boring. (No, I won't give titles). What doesn't mean that all the customized games are bad, of course.
As a player, I don't pay much attention to the aspect (though nice sprites and tiles are a plus, obviously.) What I search is entertainment: clever puzzles, tricky dungeons, surprises all over, Easter eggs, humour, innovative features, and the like.

On the contrary, much of the RM2K, RM2K3, RMXP, and RMVX RTP music is memorable; especially the older ones for veteran RM users. It strikes a bell to hear "Battle3" from the RM2K RTP played, for those of us who played the RM2K sample game and the like. ;D
As for the RTP itself, it all depends on the user. I've seen many awesome RTP games, many featuring Alex (among many other RTP-influenced protagonists), and many more are forever remembered as memorable classics (Legion Saga 1 and Final Fallacy come to mind).
RTP is a graphics style, so liking it or not IMO depends a lot on personal preference. I, for example, absolutely despise the XP RTP and kinda dislike the VX RTP (along with the VX itself, but again, that's preference), but to me the 2k RTP is gorgeous when used right. Other people love the XP RTP but hate the 2k RTP.
If I enjoy a game or not does not necessarily depend on the graphics. There are games with awesome graphics but a sucky story and less-than-great gameplay, and there are games with carcinogenic graphics but an story made of epic and win. While I do indeed prefer custom-made (or at least edited) graphics (seriously, any nubtard with Paint can do basic edits), I don't mind playing a game with graphics I don't like - it just needs to have something else to keep me playing.
Also, Pirate1 at 150% speed = awesome.

Last Scenario is better than your game.

As has been said, it's more about personal preference than anything else. There was a time when the 2k/3 RTP graphics were overused (back in those programs' heydays), and now it's XP/VX's turn. But, like kentona would tell you, graphics are a bonus. They're the icing on the cake. If your game is well made and fun to play, it will take some seriously awful graphics to bring it down. And if your game is super-pretty and plays like a broken accordion, even the best graphics in the world won't save it.
In short, worry more about making your game GOOD than making it pretty. Besides, if you use the RTP and a lot of people grumble about it, you could always change the graphics your using to something else. Placeholders can be quite handy!
from FooFighterThis is also very true.

It is illegal IF you sell your game basically because you're not paying the composers. But as long as you don't do that they won't give a fuck.

VX RTP bashing coming in T-Minus: 5 posts...
0. VX RPT IS TEH SUCKZ!11!!
*Ahem* It's all more to do with how you use it. I mean there are some really beautiful RTP games and there are some really ugly ones. If you look around enough, you can find some RTP edits, and it's easy enough to edit the character graphics. Basically, make your game *feel* custom.
Honestly there's nothing wrong with any of the RTPs(Well VX is an exception but some people like it), and I will personally play RTP games without even noticing(unless it's mapped badly). Plus, RTP games are more likely to get finished than non-RTP games. Also consider how well you can sprite and how quickly.
Of course, you can use rips as a compromise.
It's alright to use RTP if you have an unique and engaging story. But honestly I get tired of seeing it. If anybody tells you their not tired of seeing the RTP is lying.
An games presentation is just as important as its other elements.
If you truly want to make your game appeal to the masses it needs to also look unique.

As far as the graphical aspect goes, RM history has said otherwise.

A Blurred Line is an great RTP game but that came out a while back. Thats when rpgmaker was relatively new so we didn't care about the using the RTP. But its been years now. The RTP has been seen so much.....and its games that have an unique look that take the spotlight now. I can link several of those games.

I don't get tired of seeing the RTP. (Though I do get tired of the RTP music.) Sure, a nice graphical look is icing... but there are a lot of things I'd worry about there before finding a tileset to replace an already serviceable one.

In the strictest sense, ABL isn't an RTP game as the chipsets that were used were largely from one of the sample games originally bundled together with the Japanese release of RM2K.
In all honesty, RM2K's english RTP is largely different from the original RTP because of many such unofficial addons.

It's only natural that the older RTPs have had more screentime as they have been around much longer. Age, however, has nothing to do with its appeal (or in your case, the lack thereof). RTP games now have just as much a following as they did all those years back assuming the RTP is used in a skillful manner.
I can link several of those games.
For all intents and purposes, this is a topic about the RM RTP. Linking to games not directly related would only detract from the topic at hand. It'd be prudent to save them for a later date.
People should use whatever resources they are most comfortable with. Not every game needs to be a masterpiece with 100% original custom everything that is all totally consistent (but if it isn't, don't talk about it like it is). I tend to frown upon rips but I acknowledge that they are useful for certain things. Using the RTP certainly doesn't have to be a bad thing either, just look at Kinetic Cipher or Hero's Realm.
The thing about RTP music is most of it is really situational and not enough people really take the time to put thought into what the musical selection can bring to a scene. There are plenty of good ways to use RTP tracks as long as they are used appropriately and not just shoved in for the sake of having a soundtrack.
