Hey guys, just wanted to tell you that I'll start working on some simple and short RPG in the style of the early Dagon warriors or final fantasy for the NES, but I would like your opinion on which program to use, mainly rmxp and rmvx, I just started doing the tilesets (originals) in VX, but it's a pain in the ass, xp has it much easier, since you can have as many of them and whatever size you want, in vx you HAVE to follow certain guides, like water goes here etc... so I think to use xp, but vx being more recent I guess has some things that work better than xp, although I don't know if for this kind of game it has any use.... what's your opinion? :S

You have no idea how big of an arguement this is about to blow up into. I use XP personally but most people say VX is overall easier to use for beginners and has more options. VX does have weaker mapping though.
man, if only this was about 2k3 and vx and I could post my thread-ending video.
Nonono, I?m not asking wich program is better, I know what kind of topic that would start...
Let me better explain myself: I prefer to use XP because it's easiest for me to work on original tilesets in XP.
BUT is there something important for this kind of game that VX can do than XP can't? That's my doubt, because if there isn't, then I'll be using XP.
I hope I made myself clearer now :)
BTW: I?m not a beginner with any rm software, so don't worry about that, I've been using these since rpgmaker 95
thanks for the link Kingarthur, I'm reading it now.

VX is much, much closer to Dragon Quest in execution, and the mapping is easy to make similar to the same. I say VX.

I'd say XP.

Very convincing argument.
From seeing your previous work Cray, I would go with XP. You need to minimize your frustration since you're big on custom graphics.

How about you show us the tilesets. ;)

XP for easier time manipulating graphics. VX for an easier time manipulating gameplay.

Choose whichever is your priority.
This is what I have to far, probably gonna post it in the screenshot topic, but still it's more or less what I'm aiming for.

I'm using the NES palette, but probably won't be using the nes restrictions in the amoun of color you can have at screen.
For now it's being made in VX, because that's where I started it, but if I find it's too much trouble with the tilesets then I'll switch to XP.
thand for your opinions guys!
I don't know why the custom graphix thing is a big deal for VX tileset limitation in your case, assuming you are making a SMALL NES GAME you technically wouldn't need many graphics. Its not like you have special rudra trees that require a 5th layer or something.
It's no the graphic limitations of VX that I'm having trouble with, is that each tileset needs to be done in a specific order for it to work, like water HAS to go in a place, grass HAS to go in another etc, considering I won't be using near as much space as VX's tilesets have, it's a bit of a waste of space.
Yeah, from the looks of it you could make this project with any maker and it'd still be good. VX's map editor is really well suited for simple "boxy" maps (you can slap an RTP map together in no time at all), so if you're going for a NES look you'll probably find VX to be the best.

EDIT: Why's it a problem that water, grass, etc always have to go in the same place? Is it just that the tileset will look stupid?

Those forests are superb.
thanks Chaos.
I think I'll go with VX for now, seems a bit better to make a game faster once I've got the graphics.
and yeah, for one, it will look stupid and very badly organized, and it's a bit harder to work with it too, it's not THAT important but XP did it better :(

This is a stupid comparison since he pretty much says "YOU CAN DO WHATEVER IT DOESN'T MATTER ALL THAT MATTERS IS GAMEPLAY I USE A SHOE TO MAKE MY GAMES"

Kaempfer, actually he makes some of the most high-quality and malleable gameplay-oriented RGSS2 scripts in the community

Are you saying you don't agree with his last paragraph on Mapping.
