WHERE DOES YOUR STUFF COME FROM?
Posts
I don't really watch tv series anime anymore, not that i don't like them it's just that I don't have time and I couldn't find an anime that I would really like to sit and watch.
But I do watch a lot of movies, play a lot of games and read a lot of stuffs. Stuffs I read include novels, science journal/books, true crime books, psychology book, comic strips, and mangas.
Usually my inspiration come from various sources. Some game ideas just popped up in my head while I was surfing through people's deviantart gallery. Like, I was looking at this picture and 'Hmm, what if I turn this into a story and make it into a game?' Or sometime I was listening to the music and then the lyric gave me ideas about the game. Friends/people also give me ideas sometime. One of the girl scenario of my dating sim game is inspired from what my friend told me about her best friend.
Also, Piti and me like to twist the classic stories or fairy tales stuff, so most of the idea we got will most likely be applied to that and see if it works lol.

I should note that the more I work on my game, the more I really fucking hate the story. Such bullshit I originally created.
Anyway, I'm heavily influenced by music. When I hear the right piece of music, I get lots of ideas flooding into my head, taken from a wide range of sources (books, film, games, whathaveyou).

I can't actually say exactly where it comes from, but I know that I do get a lot of stuff really randomly. For example, this one time my brother wrote the number 9 on a piece of paper, and it came out sort of funny; some how, I ended up making a character out of it. Don't ask.
But games from my childhood (like the first games I played) seem to be inspirations at times, as well. So, thatz wearz eyee ackwire meez inspurrayshunz. Yup.
And while I'm at it, I do find myself smoking a lot of seaweed. That stuff is addicting, it's just hard to get back to the surface in time.

Hard to say where my ideas originally came from. The story for my game (albeit a lot less fleshed out or written down) has been floating around inside my head since I was eight or nine years old. It manifested itself in random drawings, odd little short stories I typed up on my ancient computer, little games I played with action figures/lego with my little brother, and a whole bunch of totally random thought processes when I would walk to the store or have time to sit around and do nothing after a test in school or something.
It's fair to say that some of it (potentially more than I'd like to admit) would have been shaped from games I played in my earlier years. Maybe even from anime that I watched much later. For the most part, however, when I actually turned it into a more polished form, I made an effort to avoid copying things as much as possible, but in the end, the concept is pretty cliche, and no matter how original I tried to make it, it'll always be a cliche. Probably just because when I was a kid, the games I enjoyed the most were the ones that became the cliche. Heh.

Cliche != Bad
It's very annoying when people sneer at something "oh how cliche". A good writer will use cliches in clever ways and understand when/where they would work right. Do I repeatedly annoy the hell out of the gaming community by calling every single Action RPG a rip-off of Zelda? No. You use stuff that works because it works, and then you think of ways on improving it.
Often I'll play/watch/read something where the author tried their best not to use any cliches at all and the resulting story is usually very incoherent and nonsensical. Or it ends up having a ton of plot holes and 180 degree nonsense plot twists. Only some games actually use cliches in the wrong way and end up being a clone of whatever it is the cliche is based off of (only some games? well, you know what I mean).
This isn't at you Ramza, but it's to just let you know that you should think of making your idea fun, rather than avoiding every story element that worked. Try hitting the target more accurately than the last few people, don't aim off into the left field and waste a shot.
