Circumstance penalty for being the bard.

I generally like to see that someone actually put some thought into their characters/narrative/mechanics. This happens frighteningly less often than most would probably expect.
I generally just want my game to be fun, and if I start to feel working on my game is a chore I feel something is wrong and I need to change it a bit. I don't care about artistic quality that much as I am drawing everything myself (and/or there is someone helping me with it). It's just got to be fun or I'll feel like I failed. I even don't care if my story has a few plot holes or is a bit jagged as long as the game is fun...

Well, I'm thinking of releasing a demo of an older prototype I did in RPG Maker just so people can laugh at how amazingly bizarre and horrible the story is. What was I on when I made it...? I... Also... Used... Ellipsis... A.. Bit... Too... Much... And weird exclamations like "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!". "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!?" what the hell does that sound like when a person actually says it out loud? Oh yeah and for some reason I forgot to draw the wall fills for the black space in indoor maps. And the dialog is amazingly horrible, I usually write OK to fun dialog.

Anyway, I have great attention to detail... On other peoples' games. I probably make every mistake myself that I've found somewhere else even if I make the mistake right after I just got done telling someone else about the same mistake. That's what testers are for, I guess.
I am going to go against the grain and say that I have rather low standards and expectations when it comes to RM games. For me this is a fun hobby - a distraction. I am perfectly happy just "shuffling the deck" rather than trying to come up with something unique or poignant or professionally polished.

But, even though I have rather low standards AND firmly believe in gameplay > story > presentation, I am obsessive by nature and pour a lot into my games.
My expectations for my own work have progressively grown more stringent. As far as my standards for others games? I kinda look at it in the same order as Kentona just put it but I also want something that is a little quirky and out of the ordinary.

Outside of the amateur game making areas I've also grown to realize the shortcomings of some of my favorites over time. After watching several lets plays of fairly popular SNES RPGs recently its amazing to see how many mistranslations, bugs and over all bad ideas actually made it out the door! Kind of makes one feel a lot less pressured to 'get it right' in their amateur game when you watch someone like Squaresoft mess it up lol.
Speaking of standards,

I just want everything to flow out nicely, when it comes to games...

I do play demo or in production games and never even bothered myself playing the whole complete game. Which is why I'm not really into publishing my demo game even though it's half way through the finish line. Because I think that way, it losses the thrill effect and the excitement and every vital elements that the player can acquire....

Unless I really, really like that game demo and kill everyone just to get a completed version....

Yay! that's all....
(i guess)

In my opinion allot of people have standards that are too high for the RPG Maker. I have seen people bitch about anything. I do mean bitch because it is not proper criticism.

I have gotten criticism for making a MegaMan fan game because the person believes MegaMan games should be made like any MegaMan game. Well guess what? There is a RPG MegaMan game named MegaMan X Command Mission.

I uploaded some Dark Chaos videos on youtube. On one site I posted the videos on I received a complaint. The person wanted to know why the good guys were fighting this villain. Excuse me but it is preview video. I am not going to tell the entire story in a preview.

I have received criticism for listening to the critics.

There is indeed good criticism out there. Criticism that will be respectful and inform the developer his or her problems.
MegaMan games should be made like any MegaMan game. And if it's a fan game of anything, you're pretty much going to get endless criticism unless it is really, really, really good.

And then you'll still probably be criticized.

And then you'll still probably be criticized.

Or, you'll be ignored. Don't forget that possibility.

Because there is so much crap to sift through.

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

If your making a fan game people are going to judge you on how good your game is compared to the actual game and they will always find plently to complain about.
If not, they're going to complain why x character isn't in the game.

I disagree. Case point, Legend of Mega (Working Title) from what I've seen in Tig.

Dynamo and Colonel need a throwdown to see who has worse collision detection. Whoever manages to actually hit the other wins!
"That's the funny thing about standards they can always be lowered."

Sorry I couldn't resist; line from a play I wrote.

Anyway the problem I have with fangames and especially fan fiction it that with the time and effort the author put in and with the talent some of them display they could have done something original.
I don't have very high standards. I just like playing fun games.

As long as the games LOOK like you put some time into it, I'm satisfied.

That said, I do kind of stray away from games that look "too anime" or if they're set in past. Those games kind of all look the same to me. I like games that look unique and different (in a good way). Bonus points if they're off the wall and weird.

How is this supposed to be a case in point? Don't tell me the game is actually on that small a screen o.o"
Here is what I say about criticism:

There will always be bitches at the pound.
Well mostly the part MegaMan games should be made like any MegaMan game. ;D
