i hope you guys realise how ridiculous a space program is
There are a lot of technological innovations that were realized as a result of it, though.
Besides, it's not half as ridiculous as society being earthbound for the rest of its existence. Space oriented exploration and technology is going to happen one way or the other.
this is rather the benefit of hindsight. we do not have the liberty of knowing whether they would have been discovered anyway (side note: most of the things cited as 'by-products of the space race' were innovated independently of it)
actually i dont feel strongly one way or another about aerospace expenditure i just really like this song
FUCK ANYTHING OBAMA HAS OR HASN'T DONE OR WILL DO-
HE HAS BECOME AWESOME IN MY EYES BECAUSE OF THIS IMAGE:

If someone like Obama won with about 75% acceptance, then yeah, things would be different. But in the end, he won with something like a 55%, so that's almost half. And half's not good.
75% is a landslide. The last person to receive an electoral college landslide was Reagan, but you're talking about the satisfaction of the population. There hasn't been a 75% landslide popular vote in recent history. 60% is impressive.
The fact is, with the way politics works these days, it's like rooting for a football team. You don't say "Oh wow, the Saints really are a better team, so I'll root for them now" if you live in Indianapolis. People are so entrenched in their beliefs and afraid of compromise that you'll see that 41 vote shutdown in the Senate happening EVERYWHERE, even on issues that members of that 41 had previously supported (like Cap and Trade) because now Obama is supporting it.
Really, the people are taking cues from their leaders. When the public hears senators and talk show personalities call Obama a socialist and make claims that he's not an American citizen or he wants to kill your grandmother - it doesn't matter how ludicrous the suggestion - if their team is saying it, people just run with it.

It's people like you that make Democracy not work. You have absolutely no right to complain at all if you do not vote.
Thought I'd weigh in. This stuck out to me. You made me think of george carlin. If I don't vote, I'm not responsible for putting that man in office. Fuck political process. Its a protest of how perverted the system has become, where you are left to choose between two candidates that have a few differing views, but sustain the same overall views and principals. Think Zeitgeist Addendum.

Look around you, it's just a big farce.

That's exactly what I thought of.

1 - That's excusatory bullshit that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
2 - You vote for more than just candidates on election day.

Go, watch Zeitgeist Addendum if you haven't seen it. Particularly chapter 2, starting around the 25 minute mark. Full version is on google video.
You can always vote for third party candidates... yeah, they don't win much, but if everyone doesn't vote for them because they don't win much....

Their position is never fairly advertised. They are seen as a 'throw away vote' because they never get fair time in the media. Ah, the greatness of a democratic society that's binded with a monetary system.
How is it that many other democratic countries have multiple parties splitting the vote? Canada has 4 (or 5, if you count the Green Party), Germany has around that many, etc etc... The USA seems to be an anomaly in this respect.

So, if you write in a third-party candidate, it's a throw away vote... but if you don't vote, it's in "protest"?
Either you're enabling people or you aren't. You can't have it both ways.

There are rules for third party legitimacy in the US, but they're so tilted in favor of the two monoliths (democrats and republicans) that it's an uphill battle for very little gain. Moreover, politics is always seen in a linear spectrum. Parties aren't issue driven, as they are issues driven, which makes coalition building happen intra-party as opposed to extra-party.

Well in reality, they are both one in the same. A third party vote is both a throwaway and a protest, and not voting is throwing your vote away in protest.

I like Canada's system - We don't so much get a choice on who will be Prime Minister, but we do get to choose the level of support for each of our parties. Everyone votes on their local guy, which boosts support for that party - then depending on that influence the parties are assigned a number of seats in the House. The parties themselves get to elect who will lead them, and the party with the largest influence gets to have their leader be prime minister.
This - however - can backfire, as so many votes can go to the other parties, it can occur that all the other parties combined will have a greater influence than the ruling party, and if they can agree they can stop the Prime Minister's legislation.
