PLEASE POST HERE OLDBIES. I AM VERY TIRED AND I CANNOT SEE VERY WELL...
Posts
Is it just me or are the Rpgmaker games produced now really bad compared to the old days? Like, all I see are Balmung clones now.
Were games generally better back in the day? Like, I just remember opening "Chimera Report" and it just blew my existence away. The opening scene was customized and it had some crazy ABS. Or playing ABL, which was kinda stupid/good.
Really, everytime I check this place it is just, a thunderstorm of loligames on the front page. Infact, the only game I ever hear people ever talking about in the last year and a half was that Suikoden clone.
I am just....very tired...

Look harder.
You are getting old. Games no longer offer you anything new to enjoy. Now sit back and load up a game that tickles your nostalgia and remember the good old times from when you were a boy sitting 3 feet from your old tube TV slaying slimes with your broadsword at 6 in the morning.
Games were the same way back in the old days. You're only remembering that there were good ones because they're the only ones to have stood the test of time, but there were plenty of really bad games being made back in then as well.
Not much has changed, just different people making different games nowadays.

That's what I thought. There are just too many games/projects now, and the best ones need some digging to be found. But they're there.

I'm not sure if I should bother taking this seriously since it is a topic by TFT, but really, Chimera Report? The awful ABS game that is only notable for having some hilariously overly-sexualized character art upon its (short-lived) resurrection?
C'mon, man.

Well, back then that ABS was kind of a big deal. I remember it being pretty clunky, but people seemed to love the game. It had a very stylized intro from what I can remember. It could be a bad example.
I dunno, like I said I am curious to find out if people really think rpgmaker games have progressed. I mean in all aspects of game design. I just don't think it has. I could be biased because I am 500 years old.
I am just trying to get back into Rpgmaker community junk, but nothing is really drawing me in!

I'd say the ratio of garbage to good games is probably the same as it has always been. Most of them are trash, which is to be expected in a community with virtually zero standards, but if you're willing to search through the sea of dreck there are at least a few gems to be found.
You should try catmitts' games, I'm sure you'll appreciate them.

Things were better back in my day too what a coincidence *is 100 years old*

Rose Chronicles was a game by the late Legacy. It worked a lot like an adventure game with battles. Used Hoshigami rips. The dialog wasnt bad and the story was building up to something that could have interesting.
The 'best' games that seem to be coming out nowadays are the oldschool types. Dragon Fantasy, Hellion, Generica, etc. I've kinda lost interest in the other new games, but I've probably just been playing the worst ones.
Honestly, the only difference I see now is that Emptybrain has released XP and VX and now there's the same 90% of everything is crap law being applied, but with twice the resolution. It's a pretty good metaphor for commercial games now these days- Deep down it's the same story of a ton of games with a few you like, the only difference is now they have bloom.
I remember hating it when we rented horrible video games back on the SNES just as much as I cringe at a demo of a horrible video game I've just downloaded. The only difference is that now you can read reviews on the Internet and play demos of things.
And the Chimera Report was all flash and no bang.
